    Hi Guys.

I am having an issue with my RGBLED display.

I bought my unit almost a year ago (my warranty will expire in a couple of days).

I use my laptop at work and at home so it does get carried around every day.

I noticed that the display has some sort of problem with brightness. If I tilt the laptop to the right, the brightness of the bottom bit on the right would be skewed. If it tilt the laptop to the left, the same problem will be happening on the bottom left bit.

(if you noticed, the problem is constantly appearing on a small spot on the bottom right of the screen as seen above)

The thing is since my warranty is almost expired, if Dell considers this as an issue (covered under warranty) I am willing to shell out some money to extend my warranty and then use it soon (for some reasons I can;t use it now as I am not in the country i bought my Dell from but I will be returning to the country in a couple of months time)

What do you guys think of this issue? is this something serious?

Is this a product defect and will be covered under Dell warranty?

Since you're still under warranty, I would give Dell a call to let them know that the issue occurred now, within warranty. That way you won't have to extend the warranty if you don't want to.

To me, it looks like the screen is torqued. When you twist the screen (pushing one side back while pulling the other side towards you), can you get rid of the bright spot?

Tested "twisting" the screen a bit, but the weird spots are still there.

Interesting enough, if i power my laptop down, and put my laptop inside the Targus bag that I have (the laptop would be in sideway position), the weird bright spots will move towards the side that's facing the floor (maybe the gravity is pulling down some elements inside the screen). So it is not because the screen is twisted.

Well, if I call them now, informed them about the issue, since my warranty is expiring in a couple of days, and only in September I would be able to send it for repair (i am in a different country now), I am a bit worried they won't honor the warranty at that time. So I am in a bit of doubt which action I should take.

Dell warranty is not valid outside of the country where you purchased your Dell products right? I think I read somewhere that they would only honor the warranty in the country where you bought you Dell products

Try using Dell Technical Support Chat and explaining the problem and asking them if they would honor the warranty in September. If they agree, make sure you save a copy of that chat. Then in September, contact them again; Dell has records of all calls and chats for each system so they should be able to see that you've contacted them before your warranty expired, if they deny it, email them a copy of your chat log. If they still refuse, email [email protected] and that'll direct you to Dell's executive support team, which is a lot more helpful and responsive (but only as a last resort). Of course, you are taking a chance here, but in my experience, Dell has been reasonable about supporting their products. If you don't want to risk the trouble, then the best thing would be to extend your warranty now.

Sadly, since I bought my Dell in Malaysia, I can't use Dell chat since Dell Malaysia do not offer the service for Studio XPS customers.

Maybe I'll drop off an email to them.

Btw, the issue that I am having, is it common for XPS RGBLED laptops? I am not sure what to describe this issue as. The closest display issue that I could think of is Burn-in Effect, but since the bright spots are not permanent, it is not technically burn-in effect.

In addition to email, try calling them as well to make sure the case gets logged.

I've never seen a "moving" bright spot on any screen so it definitely isn't common. A burn-in (overheating, not as the case with CRTs) usually produces a dark spot. If it didn't move, my second guess would've been a pressure mark (maybe setting something really heavy on the lid with the laptop closed) which would only be covered by accidental coverage, but this looks more like a manufacturing defect.

    Hi Mustnap

Did you ever get anywhere with Dell on this?

I have *exactly* the same issue with my Studio XPS 16.

Large areas of the screen show significant colour distortion - and the problem appears on different parts of the screen depending on the physical orientation of the computer while its not in use.

If it's in my laptop case overnight the distortion will appear on the left or right of the screen (depending on which end up I left it).

If I leave it on my desk I get a similar problem at the bottom of the screen.

Sounds like a fault in the display assembly....

I'm considering chasing Dell on this so would be good to hear if you had any luck with out-of-warranty repair.

    Many thanks

    Lex

    Hi lexonic

Thank God Dell honored the warranty i had. Since I raised the issue with them a 2 weeks before my warranty expired, they considered it is under warranty and they replaced my screen when I went back to my home country last September.

Now i got a brand new screen which does not have the issue as the previous screen. (however it did have a different issue - when I change the power profile from Full brightness to extremly dimmed, the screen behaves strangely (it went to nearly full black - i need to reboot power off my laptop and then it will be normal again)
