    hi there everyone..
I've just encountered this problem last night. Wasnt sure what the hell I did to my laptop.. :( Its a Dell xps studio 1645 on windows 7 64

I was updating a game patch and some windows updates at the same time. When I reboot, I was havin problems starting windows. It kept shutting down. So I took the battery out and left it for a while.

When I came back, the laptop started and I realized that the sound wasn't working anymore. Both built-in speakers and headphones. I googled for different type of solutions. when i tried to run 'test speaker' i get this message, 'Failed to Play Test Tone' I've tried

    -uninstalling and updating driver
-system restore (unfortunately it only allows me to restore back to the point when i started to update my game/windows)
    -disabling the sound enhancement...
-run the PSA = the sound WORKS ! but not in windows :(

Im not good with all these technical stuffs with computers..So i will realllyy appreciate if I can get some help here...

    Thanks in advance everyone

    Hi,

If you have only tried running the PSA, I would suggest you also run the Dell 32 bit Diagnostics on the speakers. Please find the below mentioned link for information on ‘Dell 32 bit Diagnostics’

How to Run the Dell 32-bit Diagnostics Utility | Dell

Also, please check in the ‘Device Manager’ to see if there are any errors on the listed audio device. Do let us know in case there are any error messages. You may uninstall the driver from the ‘Device Manager’ and the Supported application from ‘Programs and Features’. Try installing the Driver after a system restart and check if that helps.

Windows profile corruption may be another reason for this. Please try the below mentioned steps also.

    • Please create another User Account with admin rights.
    • Login to the new account and check if the Sound works fine.

I hope this helps. Please do write back in case you need any further assistance.

    Thanks & Regards

    hi there,
i tried creating another user account.. nope it's not working.
I've tried checkin on Device Manager. everything seems to be working fine. I've uninstalled the driver and reinstalled after restarting.. still not working

I wonder if this has to do with my windows update that failed recently.. to update the windows 7 sp1

I'm troubleshooting now.. will see how it goes.

    thanks
