Is there any word on when Dell will fix the Heat issues with the Dell Studio XPS 13inch and 16inch?
I really want to know who designed the screen to block the air vent....
Hope they fix this by the time windows 7 comes out.

Wear gloves.

I can't speak for the xps 16 but I own the xps 13 and heat is NOT an issue. yes it can get hot once you enable the second gpu and start running something intensive (like gaming) BUT that will happen with any gaming capable laptop. when on a single gpu for everything else it runs pretty cool. I have had it on my lap for over an hour at the air port watching 720p video with shorts on in floridia in the middle of august and it did not got uncomfortably warm, just slightly warm. If under these same circumstances yours is cooking your reproductive organs you need to call dell as you have a faulty laptop. And as for the vent blocked when you have the lid open, that seems like a plus to me cause instead of the warm air blowing over your legs it is vented upwards and away from you. and I don't see how this could harm the lcd but I could be wrong. I have said this before but i have to mention it again. You HAVE to reinstall this machine with the latest drivers from dell for everything EXCEPT the vid card drivers, get those from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ cause they are much newer versions and for me I am able to switch the second gpu on and off by right clicking on the gpu icon and I don't have to actually change power settings like I had to with the dell provided drivers. The way the machine ships it is configured to run hot and that is totally dells fault. But with a fresh os install and latest drivers loaded you should be good to go.

Thanks for the info, but id rather not wear gloves lol.
Seriously thanks.
I decided to just either get a Vaio SR and or the new HP 13inch laptop. Have to see price and specs on the HP before i decide. -
the new hp envy? that is one sweet looking laptop. the only thing I would take the xps 13 over it for is the price so far.
-
Under extreme stress the highest I've seen my XPS 1340 w/ a T8700 reach is 73C.
-
after applying new paste on both my sxps13's, even with the extra gpu enabled and under load it doesnt get above 65C, before it was around mid 70's.
however under normal operation in single gpu mode, the temps are always lower than 45C.. most of the time under 40C.
perfectly fine heat wise! -

Yes Goombaypunch, I am talking about the 13" Envy from HP. Sorry i forgot to add the name in lol.
I made this thread just to find out if anyone has heard anything about a refresh of the Dell Studio XPS model because i was interested in it until i noticed the vent being blocked by the monitor. To me this is a huge flaw in the design and really would like to know why they continue to produce the laptop like this. Since the monitor covers the back of the laptop they should just move it to the sides.
Anyway it's ok, it just means i will have to go with a different manufacturer ( Sony and or HP ) The only bad thing about the new HP envy is that it's going to be overpriced i bet and not have the power that i am looking for.
It does suck though because i like the overall design of the Studio XPS.....oh well i guess. -
-
Seriously, have you never noticed?
If I present such a design in the thesis of my engineering-studies, I expect 2 different reactions from my lecturers:
1) They have a good laugh with the joke and then they ask for the real thesis.
2) They realise it isn't a joke and are insulted by the fact that I even dare to present this.
Studio XPS 16 with 25W CPU and 35W GPU
vs
14" Asus with 25W CPU and 35W GPU
It is a general fact that smaller laptops are harder to cool because components are more packed in the casing. However looking at the result:

Thanks Stu
. And Goombay, in future, stop getting so defensive - I was just trying to help. I am not here to compete with you or otherwise. You are right that I didn't give evidence, but it is simply that it is a well known drawback of these models (every laptop has drawbacks...) - and that just because someone doesn't have heating issues, doesn't mean, that they have a model which is suddenly different and has an optimal design.
-
@disco-stu......do you even have a Studio xps ???? (or do you just copy - paste other peoples info from different forums).
here is some real fact....taken directly from my Studio xps.
and as you see there is no heat issues what so ever.
by the way, there is no problems at all with the fan, it blows out the air really good, just ridicilalous to read this crap over and over again. (the fan works similar as Macbook pro and works great)Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
Secondly, I notice you don't have the 4670 graphics card - I don't know how much difference it makes, but hopefully it may mean you won't really get many issues with it - if you are not doing intensive application/gaming for long periods of time.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -
you know what............just for fun i started FEAR.3 in 1920x1080, high/medium settings.... i played it about 20min................
.........then i took 3 pictures with my cellphone during the game in the same moment.
1 picture on Everest OSD-temp on my screen.........
1 picture on (Fear) options......
and 1 picture on the game itself when i played it
(oh my) 55 C playing FEAR.3 in Native.....well, i must be dreaming

I Laughed so hard when i saw this post!
I still don't get why you would block the vent with the monitor....Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
I can play Crysis on Ethusiast at 1080p for a long time and it's peaked at 60 something Celcius. -
overall the systems temps remain fine; there were a few initial launch systems with bad paste and heat issues (along with other quality control issues)
BUT these have been resolved!
the sxps 13 is fine now, and is a pleasure to use. -
2) Even if I had no sxps 16, what is the relevance of this question? If the statements are correctly documented, why can't they be a valuable contribution?
3) If you are refering to the pictures: no they are not my own, and I have never stated otherwise. They come from reviews on the website www.notebookjournal.de what you can also see in their URL. Very good reviews by the way: they have a non-prejudiced scientific approach instead of the wow_I_have_a_very_beatiful_shiny_laptop_to_review_and_didn't_have_to_pay_for_it approach. Unfortunately I don't have such expensive accurate measuring devices as used in the reviews, do you?
4) Ow I see I still didn't answer your question: Yes I have a Studio XPS 16 with 4670. Where other people just say: mine doesn't get hot, I have stated more then once what temperatures I have, how I measure and using which software, what load on CPU&GPU is applied, how the laptop is set up,...
Strangely it is me you ask if I have a Studio XPS, and you don't ask the other people who don't give any details...
Laptop idling 2 minutes after start-up. Undervolted (at the moment of printscreen: Performance setting with P8600 @2.4GHz). Laptop elevated on 2 CD/DVD jewel cases. Not bad in my opinion, undervolting helps a lot.
Before I undervolted the GPU&CPU both reached 89°C: laptop not elevated, playing COD4, measured with Everest during gaming.
I notice a huge difference between the airflow with the lid opened vs the lid closed. I also see a significant difference between temperatures with the lid opened vs the lid closed (however I can not provide any numbers, the next time I run a game, I'll test it again).

Oh, sorry i didn't mention this clear enough in my first post but i do not own a Dell Studio XPS. I am ( was ) interested in buying the Studio XPS but after doing my research i saw the flaw in the design.
I currently am using my girlfriends Dell Inspiron laptop. The vent on this laptop is in the same place and yet the screen never blocks the vent lol. Regardless if you say some Studio XPS laptops are running only warm the monitor still should not be blocking the air vent. Nothing should be blocking the only air vent on the laptop. -
keep in mind, these are what i find with my two sxps 13's ;
perhaps the heat issue is worse with the 16".
regardless though; the sloppy paste/heatsink installs on a few launch machines gave the "temps" of the unit a bad name; aswell there were other numerous quality issues at launch.
for the most part; all the recent sxps 13's are built better quality wise, and i haven't heard any recent reports of high temps on this unit. -
-
Disco stu...tell me......are you just Jealous because you not have a SXPS who works like it should ????... (we heard your complainant many times now...just send the God damn PC back to DELL...please)
about the air vent...i think its works great, no issues at all on the screen.....DELL have (obviously) taken that idea from APPLE Macbook pro.....
-
The screen doesn't completely block the vent, it redirects the air form the vent upwards IIRC(since there is a gap between the screen and the machine so air can pass)
-
- No. I will not return mine. I am pretty happy with the machine. It has a lot of advantages and nice specs like the high res screen. That may be said! However it also has the disadvantage of bad cooling design and heat as a consequence. That may be said too!
As long as people are saying positive things about the system, everything is ok. When somebody points out a potential negative thing, suddenly he is called a pussie and a wimp that is b*tching and complaining, maybe you should look at yourself... In my opinion it is completely normal that both positive and negative things about the system can be discussed, otherwise it would not be a discussion, but a commercial advertisement.
This topic is about heat, so yes, people do talk here about heat. If you can't stand that, stay away from these kind of topics and go to the positive topics, but don't start attacking people in the person while you don't have any argumentation yourself.
- So yes I have graphs, charts and lil hot spot diagrams and it is very clear what you can see on them. Do you have graphs, charts and lil hot spot diagrams to prove the opposite?
- No I did not buy the wrong machine... when it works as it should work (and so far: mine did more or less). The 4670 is more than adequate for the performance I want. I have never complained about that performance. What I do state, is that the cooling is not adequate for the hardware that is in the notebook, and such a thing is not acceptable for any system, not a gaming system, not a multimedia system, not a basic system.
When I buy a car with 200hp, but when I use >50% of its power, it overheats. I go back to the seller to complain. He says: you bought the wrong car, you should have bought the car with 400hp, when this one is used with no more than 50% of its power, you still have the 200hp you initialy wanted.
Is the suggestion of the seller a satisfying answer? No it is not! If I want a car with 200hp (and I don't need more than that) I am not going to buy one with 400hp because the 200hp-car overheats when I use 200hp. The 200hp-car should just do its 200hp without overheating. It's as simple as that. -
Tbh, the SXPS 16, even with the older graphics, will play any game you can throw at it, it can even play crysis with some setting on medium, I have no idea as to what the 4670 is truely capable of though. Yes, this isn't a dedicated gaming machine but gaming laptop tend to look like sh*te, it's just a fact, think about Sagers; they were never designed to look nice, nor be functional at anything other than gaming. Look at the SXPS series and it looks nice, it has a nice keyboard, fairly good processors, decent graphics, good hard drives, kickass screen etc.
What this sounds like to me is people telling us off for gaming on a PC which is perfectly capable yet isn't branded as a gaming rig so it isn't "worthy" of playing games -
Sell your inadequate machine, move on and go infect another manufacturers forum with all new charts and graphs. And perhaps, get a man card to handle the thermo nuclear temperatures? -
Hm...While I heard that the Studio XPS + 4670 was extremely hot, I bought it anyways thinking I could always undervolt, get a cooler, and replace the thermal paste. When I finally DID get the laptop I found it warm, but not to the degree with which everyone was complaining about. This may be because of my P processor, but a 10 watt difference doesn't make SUCH a significant difference. After just undervolting my processor I managed to get a surprisingly cool 59 degrees Celsius for my load temperatures and with my Zalman NC2000 this laptop is so cool I am surprised and thus I find all this complaining about temperatures rather perplexing. Sorry for the lack of pics of my temperatures, but I must get ready for my movie...adieu.

LOL is this E46's Disco Stu?
-
ViperGTS, your post is just a repetition of your previous post and you ignore my responses to that previous one.
I'm not going to keep responding to posts that are just repetitions of content that I already responded to. Please don't quote my posts if your reaction is not related at all to that quoted post. -
I still don't know why they say the lid "blocks the vent", does it really blocks the vent, or just splits the air flow, and since it splits the air flow, what's the problem?
-
disco-stu, what are your purpose here on NBR ??????? (no one bothers to read this over & over again)...........you said your point...we got it.....next please !
-
Settle down folks. Stay cool. I don't find the vent is blocked at all. If you notice, there's a gap between the LCD and the vent. It is definitely adequate for the heat dissipation. My laptop doesn't burn my lap even if I place it on my lap. So it definitely doesn't have a heat issue. Besides, how are you going to game with the laptop sitting on your lap ?!
-
disco_stu.
You are right. Never mind these folks who can't seem to see past their noses whenever anyone disagrees with them.
The heating problem on the XPS 16 is REAL. Got a feel of it myself when I was testing out a unit at the store. Most reviews I've read also say the same thing and I'd urge all potential buyers, like myself, to check them out when deciding.
Nobody is questioning its performance. Then again, that has more to do with the system's hardware config more than anything else. Spec it high and you'll get a notebook running on steroids.
All said, a design flaw is still a design flaw however much you want to gloss it over.
Way to go disco_stu! -
define: design flaw
. Blocking air vent?

Thanks for playing. -
Here are my CPUID Hardware Monitor results stressing the CPU for 10 minutes.
STOCK VOLTAGE:
UNDER VOLTED:
I can't figure out how to get my GPU temps yet... gonna try stressing it and getting those temps too. Right now it is warmer then my tablet PC... but I don't think it is a "problem".
