I have made a new install of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. I then install "Dell System Software" which is found under "System Utilities" on their driver page. I reboot the system, and then windows gets an error and won't start. I have the newest BIOS installed.
-
Do a format again. Install all drivers except Dell System Software then do install all updates from windows update and restart the computer. Now install Dell system software.
-
Is it even necessary to install dell system software? I never do, am I missing out on something if I don't install it?
-
See I will explain you in simple terms. One of the most important change that DSS does is the fixes to some of the Updates released by microsoft.
When you install all the updates, some updates may have conflicts with the functionality of the system so Dell patches those KB updates. See the attached link.
Now as you can see the attached image. Those were the fixes by dell on some of the windows updates. DSS also does some system wide changes that we are unaware of. Its more like optimizing the system.Attached Files:

This incorrect, all the DSS does is install MS updates/patches that Dell considers critical. If you keep your system up to date with MS updates there is no need to install DSS.
-
DSS = bloatware; it is not necessary. Don't install all the extra crap Dell gives you. That is, unless you like the dock or some other things that they offer.
-
That's not true. DSS is what yellowlt4 already said.
-
Which is it guys? Could it potentially fix an issue with sleep..?
-
I believe it does fix sleep and other issues...Here is what it updated for me:

Hope this helps -
yellowlt4 is correct. Dell System Software is not bloatware at all.
A better explanation can be found here: http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dsn/document?c=us&l=en&s=gen&docid=324722#Issue16
Dell System Software is a utility that provides critical updates and patches for your operating system. Dell System Software is necessary for correct operation of your Dell computer.
Provided that you run both the critical and recommended updates, you don't necessarily have to install the System Software as all hotfixes are now delivered through Windows Update. -
Sorry, forgot to ask: What error are you getting?
-
From what I have been told, with Windows 7, it is not totally necessary..it automatically detects everything that your notebook has and gets the proper drivers through the MS database. But that is just simply what I have read.

That's what I said at the start by ppl started arguing for stupid reasons...
