Is this to be believed?
And if so, will serious gamers buy it?

well, a xps 17 with 3d is around 1200 pounds, while the old xps is around 750... not quite the same price?
and yeh, i guess serious gamers will want GTX which is not something xps will offer -
How does one draw the line at what makes a "performance" gaming machine? Based on the specs alone, it seems that the L702x should be capable of running pretty much any current-gen game on reasonable settings.

XPS has always been borderline between high end consumer media notebook and gaming notebook. The last serious gaming XPS was the M1730.
Unfortunately the SXPS and the new XPS line detract away from that completely. Serious gaming notebooks utilize MXM so you can upgrade to that new GPU when it comes out, and have serious cooling systems to cool down those GPU. The XPS is more of a high end multimedia oriented notebook that can play your games, but not the highest detail/resolution. -
How hard is it to swap a high end GPU into the current xps(and the 02 version)? Like how many things you have to change for it to be compatible?

In my opinion, Dell puts a spoke in itself´s wheel because of Alienware.
I guess many users want more powerful graphic cards inside the XPS,
but don´t get them because of Alienware.
on the other hand, not very much XPS-prospects will buy an Alienware,
either because of the much higher prices, the flashy design, or both.
Result: they buy from any other manufacturer and get a XPS-like,
normal Design and the power of an Alienware.
Sorry for my rookie english, I hope u can understand what I mean. ^^ -
I think XPS will never be a real XPS anymore. Simply because Dell has bought alienware, and it has taken the role of XPS.
I searched the net and found some articles about Dell buying alienware back in 2006, and one of them stated "complement, not compete with one another", seems like exactly what they are doing right now. -
Essentially its not a bad thing to have different lines...but XPS has to have good GPUs for the price it is offered.
Alienware notebooks have a couple of flaws for most customers:
1. They are heavy, very heavy
2. They are not professional looking
3. And they are too expensive
Some people just want a high-mid class notebook which can play games in the next 3 years on a reasonable level and for a reasonable price. -

I tend to find the XPS houses mid range discreet GPU, but always failed miserably at playing games with exception to the M1730. For a super loaded new XPS you are almost getting into Alienware pricing.. -
