Hi I have the Dell Wireless Travel Mouse WM524 and it works very nicely overall with my Dell XPS 13 9343. I've had it for months now but could never figure out how to change the side buttons' functions. I've looked for software/drivers on Dell's site and even tried 3rd party mouse mapping programs (they couldn't even detect the side buttons but successfully detected them on my gaming mouse). I know that the mouse was intended for the Charms feature in Windows 8 but I got the mouse once I had Windows 10. Now the side buttons do nothing except for activate Cortana when I press them and move the mouse left. I want to add more functionality like switching virtual desktops with them. Any ideas?

Sorry if I am breaking any rules or wrong thread. I'm new here.

I think you're asking too much out of a bare bones $20 mouse.

To do what you want, you need a mouse with programmable / remappable buttons. Switching virtual desktops, in particular, is a pretty advanced function. So you'll need a mouse that can natively do this, like a Logitech MX master. You can't just use any mouse with programmable buttons, because the keyboard shortcuts for switching virtual desktops requires the Windows key; and most mice cannot map the Windows key onto a mouse button.

I just accepted that I can't utilize those mouse buttons but I've found a better solution. I used XMouseButtonControl to change the tilt wheel left/right to switching virtual desktops. Also the middle button to task view. It works great!

The chief function of those buttons is that they are not pressed occasionally :D
