Hey it seems that my CPU temps with HWinfo is a bitt lower on idle/light useage. I am averaging the same as you which is roughly 50-54 on idle. I was doing some undervolting and stress testing with XTU so that probably explains the higher temperatures.

I wish I was back in Norway. Where I could use this laptop as a free heating appliance.

I haven't tried playing games. Yet, that will probably wait until I find a way to hookup the system to a monitor/keyboard.

My config is the same as you which is i7-6560U (iris 540), 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, QHD. Only I got the silver version.

Seems like we left the same place, just moved from norway to australia.
Gaming worked quite okay, a few hickups when a lot of keys were pressed at the same time
    - and a slighly cramped position when holding "awsd" and wanting to have the screen right in front of you.

Anyone seeing the fan starting when having the charger plugged in? Using it as a work laptop here with the lid closed and it performs great, but it gets warm even with low cpu usage and the fan kicks in quite easily when plugged in. I have checked the power plans, its on balanced and I have also gone over the settings its almost the same as on battery, nothing power hungry enabled. Seems to be a bit better when the battery is around full and the charging slows down.

Not the loudest noise, but still an annoyance.Taking the power cable out while charging usually quickly stops the fan.

This is normal, fast charging the battery dissipates a lot of heat, so fan kicks in to cool the laptop (heat is coming from battery not the CPU, that is why work load does not make a difference). Once battery is close to be full, charging current is reduced and power losses are lower. Once the battery is fully charged, the battery itself will not dissipate any heat anymore and fan speed will depend practically only on CPU usage.

    Hi all!
I couldn't find it on Dell website but does anyone know if removing the base cover would void the warranty? and what about other parts like battery and fan? My fan stopped working so I wanted maybe to look into it myself.. Also I should mention that I have the most basic warranty
    Thanks!

My fan doesn't come on at all when charging and not under load, and the temp is barely noticeable - but I have i5/FHD, perhaps you have a different model. With Iris graphics? Reviews indicate these models run hotter.

I've never owned a laptop that had fans spinning audibly when just charging, and I wouldn't keep it if I had. If it made any noise at all when charging overnight, it would be returned sharpish.

I returned the XPS 13 QHD Iris model and picked up the XPS 15 4K model instead. There's no coil whine on this one at all. Its deadly silent but because of the amount of power the fans come on a little sooner.

[/ Quote]

I would recommend 1920x1080, Fullscreen, Anti-aliasing/Multi-Monitor/Stereo-3D/Tesselation disabled, Low Quality, Directx 11

My HD 520 gets round about 22 FPS.

I have the FHD and able to change the brightness manually - I can't find any automatic brightness control on the machine so far. No flickering either when I turn it down - but I'm getting on a bit and don't have the best eyesight in the world!

The XPS 13 small bezel version (both 1st & 2nd gen) has Dynamic Backlight Control embedded on the display panel made by Sharp Electronics. What this does is the screen automatically adjusts the backlight depending on the current elements displayed on the screen. If the display has dark colors to show, it lowers the backlight. When bright colors, it increases the backlight. (STUPID RIGHT???) I know its annoying. The inventor of DBC is simply stupid. Anyways, after a year I think, Dell came to its senses and finally acknowledged this problem. It officially released a fix for the QHD+ version. Sadly, the FHD version is forever left out. As far I know, the FHD panel's firmware cannot be flashed by a simple executable file unlike the QHD+. Note that the display panel firmware is independent of the XPS' BIOS or any Windows or Linux installed on the hard drive.

So if Dynamic Backlight Control (DBC) annoys you, get the QHD+ version and download the official fix from Dell's website.

hi, who has the model 6650U, you can confirm the problems described in the review of notebookcheck:

    - High core temperatures
    - Warm surface temperatures
    - CPU throttling

    thank you

I just downloaded and ran using the above settings.

    FPS: 35.8
    Score: 902

Also ran benchmark after running program for 10 minutes to ensure that if there was any throttling it would reach that point. Laptop ran warm, but not too hot. I didn't have any monitoring programs running to get temp figures though.

Has anyone had an issue with their trackpad "coming loose"? This just started happening, but whenever I tap on it now it makes a noise like the trackpad is hitting something underneath, extremely annoying. I can't even tap on the trackpad now without the sound driving me crazy

Also today for the first time when I thought it was turned off, it overheated in my backpack and was insanely hot to the touch with the fan running on full blast.

Edit: Right after I posted this I checked and the trackpad is moving because the body screws underneath it were coming lose. I've never taken it apart so not sure how that happened, but problem is solved

Anyone with the FHD model getting more than 6hrs battery life on lowest LCD brightness? If so, what OS changes did you make to get that? I have a signature model and can't seem to get more than 6hrs battery.

    But with what usage?

using only word, I can last more than 15 hours.
While using internet, my battery life is arounh 10 hours.

But with more intense usages indeed it can go down to around 6 hours.

The most important is to check your bios version. Then check all drivers and windows updates.

6 hours batter is from web surfing. Using Chrome with adblockers. Bios is still stuck at 1.05. Unfortunately, I have a Samsung Pro 950 in it and that's the highest bios that supports it. Battery life has been a huge disappointment.

I have it around 60% brightness in power saving mode most of the time and I have had no issues with battery. I can't quite remember any time when I have to use my laptop unplugged for 6 hours straight yet, but I can easily go through 2-3 days without worry. I run a linux VM relatively often for coding as well. Signature edition, i5/8gb/128GB. Latest bios and drivers.

Considering the power consumption of the 950 Pro, I am not surprised it would significantly decrease your battery life.

Have you checked the Taskmanager for anything that uses CPU cycles? For me, removing "C:\Program Files\Waves" gave me an extra 3 hours or so of battery life; whatever MaxxAudio is supposed to do, it constantly used the CPU.

If you get the QHD+ version, you can eliminate the DBC by downloading the tool from Dell. That tool completely eliminates it.

Mine I5/FHD/Samsung 950 256 Pro has latest Bios 1.2.3, SSD read speed up to 1750 Mb/s is quite enough for me. Discharge while brows ing ~8 W/h, idle 4.5-5 W/h, so I have about 7-8 hours.
I use Ubuntu 16.04, but Windows has the same discharge rate at least in idle, not sure about active state.

    Just got a QHD, 16gb, 512gb, i7-6560 afterall.
    BIOS 1.2.3 (latest)
In linux, idling at 7-8W atm, 6H battery life in very light usage - ie not even browsing, at 20% brightness (this is *bad* results if you wonder).

Once drivers get fixed up I'm hoping to get down to 4-5W and 8H battery life in light browsing usage, but of course that's not guaranteed. If that doesn't happen, then it looks like getting a non-iris would be the better idea.

To give you a comparison, a 3y old vaio with haswell cpu idles at 3W

    FHD, 8GB, 256gb, i76500

Win10, idling at 4W (sometimes dropping to 3.5W), but doing anything else than just staring at empty desktop will increase consumption to at least 5-6W. Full medium-ish web browsing runtime (redditing, so constantly clicking different links and scrolling, not much idle reading) is around 7-8 hours. All on power saver profile and battery saver constantly enabled.

That is not bad, but definitely not 10+ hours everybody is talking about. I got this configuration instead of the usual i5 one because I thought main reason for higher end model's ****ty battery life is the QHD screen so I just got the i7 without the QHD. But looks like I was wrong. It is the CPU that is main power drainer.

Has anyone there tried inserting SATA-based M.2 SSD? I heard they are more efficient.

The i5 consistently is more efficient every single generation
I took the i7 for Iris but apparently this is much worse (than non-iris) so far ;-) I thought it'd be +- the same as i7's.

I'd recommend the FHD i5 right now. Also, 4W on win10 idling isn't bad. Even my vaio there's no way i get it to 3W on Win10 (its around 5W). On linux its easier to keep things minimum and well behaved. I wouldnt be surprised if the FHD i7 did close to 10h (ie consistently stays under 5W) on Linux

But if you reduce the cpu power like i5, you will have the same battery life, right?
@mordocorc has i5, but he has the same your battery life...

Please help me.. I can change the order..

Which row should I look for to get he wattage drawn for my system in HWinfo?
The charge rate (negative), cpu package power or total system power?

Average charge rate is at -12.2 W.
Total system power has average of 1.41 W.
CPU package power is averaging at 3.95.

Im on battery saver and 50% brightness (nothing tweaked with my system).
The numbers are going downwards right now since I have been installing software and surfing.

Also, every time I check for updates in Dell Command Update it wants to update "intel 100 series chipset driver". Can I bypass the update by installing whats needed by myself, since it seems like the update program is stuck in a loop with the update.

That is what I thought, but apparently it is not the case.

@mordocorc installed 950 pro SSD into his XPS which is apparently very fast, but power hungry SSD.

To answer my own question, it looks like a m.2 850 evo uses about 70% of the power of a pm 951 during idle. not sure about under load.
