and what about the scrolling with chrome? it feels buttery smooth?

Installed the Intel 8260 with no change. I got in touch with Dell and they sent a replacement laptop. It appears so far that this one doesn't have any issues.
-
Sorry. Firefox user here. Perfect with Firefox!

Could anyone recommend a nice sleeve for the XPS, or is the a accessoire topic maybe (also for docks and USB type C products)?
-
Everything works absolutely perfectly on my end.
However, I did have the touchpad replaced shortly after buying - but only because physical clicks only worked 50% of the time (even in Bios, meaning actual hardware vs drivers) - has worked perfectly since replacement. I would assume my case of an actual hardware issue is more rare. -
I like this sleeve. I especially like how I can use my laptop without removing it completely.

I bought a cheapo 11" laptop neoprene sleeve off ebay.
It looks like this. Works great. -
This works great for mine; Snug and nice. The 11/12inch variant,

I am trying to decide between buying:
- Base model of XPS 13 (what is coil whine like for this one?)
- Waiting for Zenbook 3
- Waiting for new macbook pro's in Q4
- Just going with the Macbook 12"
Decisions decisions... -
Couple things on the new Bios. I know they've pulled it down now, but I installed it before they did so. It has been very positive for me. The coil whine is only audible if you put your ear literally 1 cm away from the laptop - so a non issue now. Also, the heat that would make the bottom of the laptop kind of warm with normal chrome browser usage is virtually nonexistent now. And less heat, of course, means less work and noticeably longer battery life. It's day 2 but I'm thinking 8+ hours on the QHD resolution/i5 - 50-70% brightness.
So I am very happy now as the heat and battery life were 2 of the 3 things keeping me from thinking this is a excellent laptop. And I'm, coming from a MacBook Air.
The final thing is the touchpad - which is really pretty nice - but not Macbook good. I am trying to get the latest Win 10 insider update to see if that is it. This is definitely software/drivers in my view though. I'll share once i get the new update.
I hope they release the bios again so everyone can get it. Anyone else enjoying it yet?
[edit - oh sorry, I also replaced the wifi card right away - really easy to do and a big impact - they should only sell with intel wifi cards on all editions!] -
I got https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UX2RR0Q/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (13"). It's inexpensive and fits perfectly. The power cord and adapter, plus a small mouse fit in the zipper pocket, but you couldn't fit much more than that.
-
That one looks really nice! Thanks!
-
I got the Amazon Basics one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CD8AF48/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Very cheap and well made. No outside or inside pockets for anything else, but for toting the laptop itself it's a great bargain.

After the update, my touch pad is perfect! Amazing!

Agreed - Windows Insider release 14366 solves the touchpad. It's macbook good now, including a new four finger swipe which switches between desktops or apps.
Combined with the wifi card replace and the new bios that fixes heat and battery - I'm perfectly satisfied with everything now!
Ok, one exception - needs to have a 2 finger swipe to go back/forward in browser - I'm sure that's got be coming sometime.
-
I updated the bios from 1.3.3 to 1.4.3 a couple of days ago and almost immediately noticed that the fan started to run almost continuously. I visited the driver download page on Dell's support site and saw 1.4.3 was pulled because 1.3.3 is currently listed as the latest. Anyway, I downloaded 1.3.3 bios setup. Luckily I could downgrade the bios by just running the installer. After going back to 1.3.3, the fan problem disappeared.
Just wanted to share my experience in case anyone is planning the upgrade to 1.4.4. -
Mine does 2finger back/forward in chrome out of the box. Try from the edge of the trackpad.
-
Thanks for the info! Does anyone have an estimate how long it'll take for this to get into the normal release circle?
Yeah. I'd be happy if one could re-map the three finger swipes to back/forth.
Two finger swipe can be accomplished with this autohotkey script. It's not mine, and it's also not perfect, but.. better than nothing:
-
Did u mean 1.4.3 as i've not seen a 1.4.4

Noticed a bunch of issues that are really starting to add up.
Sometimes I will close out Chrome and realize that I forgot something, so I go to open it back up and it never loads, it might if I wait 10 - 15 minutes. That's been happening every now and again for months.
This week it got worse, I would be in the middle of using Chrome and try to open a new tab, that tab doesn't load for about 10 minutes, but every tab I already have open could refresh or go onto another page. I assumed it was a wifi issue, but I finally tried Edge yesterday while this was going on and didn't have an issue. I tried uninstalling Chrome, but it doesn't go through, it tells me to wait or it might've already been uninstalled, but then I'll just click the Chrome shortcut and it'll come up, eventually. And now I'm noticing how buggy my file search is, it takes forever to load, it wouldn't let me do a virus scan on the USB I had plugged into my computer, I couldn't even right click on it, but everything worked fine when I plugged it out.
Another issue I've been having is that sometimes when I log into my computer, it tells me that the system couldn't connect to the microsoft network or something else (it's not always the same thing), but I have no other options so I just type in my password 2-3 more times and it'll finally let me in. That has been happening for a few months.
And this only happened once, but I might as well mention it, I turned on the computer and when I got to the login screen, the screen was flicking and I couldn't do anything, just had to press the power button. That was last week.
I am on the latest BIOS update. -
Sorry, I meant 1.4.3
-
Guys is this normal? Near the track pad, the left and right side seem slightly raised, as in its not flush.
I attached a picture, if you look closely like 1 centimetre to the left of the track pad, a line can be seen. This is on both sides.
Normal or defective?Attached Files:

-
Have you opened your XPS 13? And tightened everything right back everytwhere?
Mine has a slightly larger gap on the right side but nothing I will complain about. But maybe yours is worse, and so you could complain. -
So it isn't so much the track pad that seems off to me, but the palm rest to the left and the right of the trackpad.
It slightly raised a couple of millimetres, 1-2cm to the left and right of the trackpad.
Similarly how you can see some indent/emboss along the whole width of the laptop palm rest below the keyboard.
Are your palm rests completely flat from the track pad to either edges of the laptop, or do you see a slight raise when it approached the track pad?
If you were to look at bottom front of the laptop it would look like this:
-------^-!!!!!!-^--------
If you imagine the "!" Being the trackpad, and the rest representing the palm rest, the "^" is where the palm rest is ever so slightly raised.
I don't know if palm rest, or the carbon fibre chassis is the correct word to use but It is the carbon fibre part of the laptop which isn't flush. -
Anyone with an XPS 13, could you quickly report if your carbon fibre palm rest comes out a bit around the trackpad (as if it's slightly raised), or if it is just flush and completely flat from the edge of the track pad all the way to the edge of the laptop?
This is really bugging me to the point I am considering returning it :Z. -
iMbaQ - I see what you mean on yours - and mine is completely flat - that looks like a manufacturing defect. You don't have a Microsoft store close by to go compare do you?
-
PAPPL - I see 2 finger on the Edge browser - but nothing on Chrome. Anyone else have 2 finger Chrome fwd/back gestures?
-
Oh ok well it is getting returned then
.
No Microsoft Store nearby unfortunately... -
Today i wasn't able to get 2 finger bach/fwd in chrome work properly. Worked after several minutes trying. Maybe the problems with the Dell trackpad get worse with the layer of visible grease on it. Worked perfectly when new.
-
what's the matter with the wifi card?
-
My experience with the wifi card was dropped connections and spotty coverage and much slower speeds compared to a Macbook Air or Samsung s7 that always worked perfectly in the same locations. Replacing the Broadcom in the XPS 13 with a ~$20 Intel wifi card off amazon fixes it however. It could be (and likely is) more driver/software related - but didn't want to wait for a software fix when a hardware replace was easy.

My wifi card worked right out of the box with no issues. Weird.

Hello, I'm typing this on a decade old XPS M1330 which I've gone back to each time my two succeeding machines died. Having just buried my Lenovo X301 I today ordered an XPS 13 with FHD display, 8GB ram and the PCIe 256GB SSD. I should have it by the end of next week and will be reading this thread in the meanwhile.
-
Ok I am contemplating repurchasing the XPS 13 having returned mine due to the defect.
I was wondering if I should order the same i5-6200 FHD model or go with the i7-6560u FHD model.
Main reason for doing this is actually, the i5 is ready to ship while the i7 is built to order, and I don't know if the ones which are ready to ship are like really old stock - and here I am hoping if it's built to order that quality control has improved?
What do you guys reckon?
Also, is it worth going for the developer model just to get the intel wifi card, the Broadcom was rubbish on the unit I received - unless someone knows that there is a definitive fix for it other than replacing it - I don't feel like replacing parts on a brand new laptop on principle. -
Updated the BIOS to 1.4.3 when it was available. You could cook dinner on my XPS13 now: Hot like hell and fan constantly running. Hope it gets fixed soon.
-
I'm not experiencing this behaviour on my XPS 13 with this BIOS. Any processes running consuming a lot of CPU?
-
Neither am I , installed 1.4.3 on release and had no issue. Bought my May 16th 2016 (so you get an idea of age) xps 13 9350 512gb i7 QHD
-
I'm noticing a lot of issues are with respect to the i7 and QHD screen, perhaps i5 and FHD is the way to go. From some of the stuff I've read, the extra potential of the i7, particularly with the iris pro, just can't fulfill their potential due to the 15w tdp limit and limited cooling, so you just get a lot of heat and throttling. The QHD just adds to the taxation to the Processor due to constantly having to pump that many pixels.
I had the MacBook 12" (2016) side by side to the XPS 13 FHD and I must say the XPS looked better for me, contrary to what all the reviews said. Shame it has the dynamic contrast issue. -
Like I shared before, I'm another who is perfectly fine with the 1.4.3 BIOS, still.
It's just my opinion on which specs to get, of course, but I have this laptop because of the QHD screen - it is beautiful and makes everyday usage more enjoyable. I really like the touch screen as well and didn't think I would care about it, but use it a lot to scroll or even using windows 10 apps. I wouldn't want FHD.
Ram is pretty easy - if you do lots of virtual machines or have a special set of enterprise developer tools get 16GB, otherwise 8GB is fine.
CPU is easy too, i do lots of stuff with lots of apps and the i5 has never slowed me down. I'm not sure what the use case for i7 is, gaming I guess? but this probably isn't the machine to game on, video encoding? again probably not the right machine. -
If you're getting the XPS 13, the only real screen option is QHD+
Scaling issues are a bummer, but it's a lot less annoying than the dynamic contrast on the FHD -

I picked up the lowest end model at the Microsoft Store on the first week of release. i5/8GB/FHD. Performance has been great(and this is coming from a person who has a i5/16GB/GTX 980 rig), and the matte screen still looks great. VirtualBox, Eclipse, videos, and even light gaming(minecraft, tf2, overwatch to a lesser extent) work great. FHD at 13" is so much nicer than QHD+, since you have to use much less windows scaling. All the computers at the microsoft store with QHD+ all run at 720p because Windows scaling in some apps is just terrible.
Only two issues I have had with mine are the flickering/blinking screen, which happens sometimes when waking from sleep and doing streaming or constant downloading. That and the faint buzz of coil whine. -
If I want a great screen, I use external screen...
To be honest, I don't see any vantage to have a super quality on a 13 inches...
I prefer connect my 23 inches Samsung..
Inviato dal mio Nexus 4 utilizzando Tapatalk -
Personally, I take the extra battery life of the FHD over better resolution. And the dynamic contrast has never bothered me. I only ever notice it, if the whole screen has been black for a couple seconds.
-
You're missing the point of my post.. which is the dynamic contrast present on all FHD panels.
I don't know how people can deal with it. That **** is annoying, even more so when you drop a substantial amount on a laptop of this price.
I have a Dell Ultrasharp that I use at home, but for all those times that I was outside, I had to deal with all those shifting colours. It's the main reason I returned my 9343 and first 9350. I now have a QHD+ 9350 and no regrets (aside from the i7-6560 TDP throttling).
I guess if you don't notice it then you should consider yourself lucky.. I suppose. -

The coil was used to be my problem. but fortunately, a few tweaks on the power profile did the trick. I set mine at High TDP and minimum processor power at 10%. The coil was gone. -

First off, the feature is officially called CABC (content adaptive backlight control). The LED backlight of the LCD dynamically changes its brightness depending on the current elements present on the LCD. It's not contrast, it's BRIGHTNESS!! It's not just the black and whites
that change, the RGB pixels of the LCD also change as a result.
I suggest you see in person the QHD version. If you're gonna use it outdoors, it would look really bad..it's probaly the most reflective display ever on a laptop! it's twice as reflective as the Macbook Pro retina. In doors though, its awesome, plus its brightness won't change without your permission
Anyway, tech support told me that Dell engineers are working on a BIOS that will try to override the CABC on the LCD's fimrware. Hope that happens -
Some Tech Noob Notebook Consultant
Hmm, I'll probably give that a shot. Hopefully that doesn't affect battery life too much. -
hello. read a lot of 6560u throttling.
after repaste and only with cpu use, what is your max cpu frequency? -
I update it to 1.4.3 and the fan was constantly on. After downgrade it back to 1.3.3, everything is much better. QHD+ core i7
-
Someone can give me some battery degradation info?
