Speaking of power usage, I'm looking forward to updating to a 960EVO SSD (250GB) this week, but I'd like to be able to compare power usage so I get an idea of affect on battery life. I've got Open Hardware Monitor, but don't see a measurement for Disk Power Usage. Any good tools for this?

Download hwinfo, and check these lines under "Smart Battery/Battery #0":
    Designed Capacity: 57532 mWh
    Full Charged Capacity: 52539 mWh
    Wear Level: 8.7 %

A tip for fellow XPS owners. A dry microfiber cloth lifts fingerprints and smudges right off the carbon fiber deck. A damp cloth might do the same but a dry cloth works for sure.

Put in the 960 EVO, and it feels alot snappier. Haven't figured out how much it's affected battery life though.

Cool results, thanks! I switched to a 850 EVO, needed space over speed. :)

    Impressive!
How did you migrate from the old SSD? Did you use any software to move all of your content and OS?

Didn't transfer any programs or data from the old disk, I figured it was a good time to start from scratch. All my data lives in dropbox anyway.

Ran the media creation tool from MS to create a Win10 install media. I tried pulling an ISO from the dell site, but couldn't get it to work. Had to download wifi drivers from dell manually.

$129 for a 250GB drive, I'm pretty happy with the result.

An alternative, if you don't want to download anything....within Windows 8 or 10 command prompt, run: powercfg /batteryreport

An HTML page will be saved (battery-report.html) in your C://Users/Yourusername/ and will show all of the info. I found this little tidbit on google search this evening (didn't see didsip's download link at first)

Sweet, and you didn't have to change anything in the BIOS to make the new SSD work?
Just pop it in, boot and install windows?

Good question. It actually took a little fiddling to get the BIOS to recognize the drive. I ended up having to disable secure boot to install. I'm not too concerned about physical security on this machine, so I'll leave it for now.

I had tried putting the Samsung drivers on the boot media, but didn't get the format right, so windows couldn't see the drive unless I disabled secure boot. Later, on my desktop machine, I figured out the drivers and the installer recognized the drive.

I found instructions for doing this on the web, but they included downloads that I couldn't verify the source of, and I wanted to make sure I had signed Samsung drivers. If you're concerned about security enough that you don't want to disable secure boot, you don't want to put unsigned drivers on your machine either. :)

Today Dell Update wanted me to update BIOS to version 1.4.12. The result was "No bootable devices found". Happy Monday! :-|

According to diagnostics everything was OK

Among other things I tried reverting to previous BIOS with no success.

What finally solved the issue after much trial and error was removing the original "Windows Boot Manager" and adding the same boot option again (I called it WinBoot). Maybe it is enough just to add the boot option and disable the original.

Click "Add Boot Option" and search path "EFI / Boot / bootx64.efi".

The original "Windows Boot Manager" keep adding itself, and is still corrupt, but it does not affect the startup anymore.

What happened during BIOS update to cause this? Did it happen to anyone else?

Did they ever create a fix for the touchpad click-drag problem? Every now and then the touchpad tap is registered as a tap and hold, therefor if you tap text, moving the cursor begins highlighting text, or tapping and icon and moving begins to drag the icon.

The only solution I have so far is to log out and log back in. It has been a problem forever and no sort of toggling mouse/touchpad settings seems to help.

Never had that problem -- at least to the degree you mention. Every once in a blue moon, I'll have a tap register as a tap and hold, just as I have on other computers. But I don't have to log out and back in again -- a simple tap clears it. Perhaps you have/had a hardware problem?

this laptop was the worst choice I made. I am still having issues with the touchpad that no windows updates could resolved. The coil whine is still perceptible with all bios updates that I have tried from dell website. I am thinking to buy a sm951 ssd to give a try to reduce the coilwhine but I think it will be a waste of money.

Yeah, I still sometimes have that. It got a bit better after a fresh install, but it still happens every couple hours. Normally clicking around win, shift & ctrl somehow helps though, so I don't need to log out..

What's the secret to getting a sleeping laptop to stay asleep? More often than not, when I wake it up the next day it has either updated Windows or logs me back on having lost my browser windows and open apps. If it's sleeping, I just want it to sleep! Shouldn't be that hard.

Normally turning hibernation off (powercfg /h off) and then on will solve this for some time or a long time.

I have exactly the same issue. It started after BIOS update 1.4.12 and continues with BIOS 1.4.13. But I am not sure that is the cause, but it seems likely.

Where do I type this? The command window? It did not work for me?

    C:\Users\Emil>powercfg /h off
Unable to perform operation. An unexpected error (0x65b) has occurred

Edit: You need to type this command as administrator. Right click on the Windows icon (bottom left) and choose "Command Prompt (Admin)".

I turned hibernation off and then on. It will be interesting to see if this works to prevent unwanted startups. Thanks for the tips.

The Dell still powers up. Not good at all.

It is warm inside the sleeve when I pull it out in the morning at work. Not to mention the power in the battery is always gone when you need the computer fast.

Have you tried to disable hibernation and not enabling it again? That is what I did and have not experienced the computer waking up from sleep since.

If I disable hibernation, will the laptop go from sleep to shut off? How will it affect the behaviour?

The problem now seems to be it stays in sleep, instead of transfer to hibernation after 30 min, or it goes back from hibernation to sleep for some reason. I am not sure, have not monitored it that closely.

No, it shouldn't shutdown on its own. It will just remain in sleep. I don't notice any significant battery drain, but I also use mine every day (so it is normally only I sleep mode overnight)

I've been using the drivers provided by Intel since I got the laptop, and I never found coil whine to be an issue with mine, unless I set the power plan to Performance. Maybe this is why I always wondered how it seems so bad to others.

My laptop keep starting up by itself, even when it has been shutdown. Not sleep or hibernation, but shutdown.

Next time I start the computer, the battery is totally drained. What could cause this? Why does it start by itself? I have recently search it for malware and such, so I'm thinking more Dell or Windows stuff that starts the computer from shutdown (and hibernation).

Any ideas? I thought shutdown would work at least.

I will try to change the setting "Allow this to turn off this device to save power" according to an old thread about the same issue about Dell and Windows 10.

    1) Right Click "Start button"
    2) Now go to "Device Manager"
    3) In device manager, under system devices find "Intel Management Engine Interface"
    4) Now right click on it and select properties
    5) Go to Power Management tab
    6) Now "Uncheck" the check box saying "Allow this to turn off this device to save power"

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us...en-after/29e6d27d-c99b-454b-8bdd-fffc6a72c50b

As the picture shows, it seems the "Intel Management Engine" went through some changes about the same time when the problems started, which indicates it could be the culprit?

The alternative method suggested in the same thread about Dell and Windows 10 waking up and draining the battery is the following:

"The problems were caused by Intel Management Engine Interface and Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers. When i did a factory reset and passed those 2 drivers from being installed, the problems just been solved. And when i accidentally reinstalled them from auto updates, the problems came again. So, i did reuninstalled them again and now everything work fine."

How would this affect the behaviour of the laptop?

Should be some curse... Lastly I replied to someone trying to help on the sleep issue and lo and behold, now I'm plagued with some variation of it again. If I sleep on battery, XPS turns off. It is working OK plugged in... Any clue?

Well, it looks like I solved it. It was a solution coming from the newer 9360, but it has been working for now.

    - disabling the connected standby mode helped:

    De < http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19963459>

However, if you want to use basic sleep instead of Connected Standby, you can disable the feature as follows:
    1. Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).
    2. Move to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power.
    3. Double-click CsEnabled and set to 0, then click OK.
    De < http://windowsitpro.com/windows-client/disabling-windows-connected-standby>

I use the Intel 8260 WiFi, and update drivers directly from Intel. Maybe when I updated the driver a few days ago, it caused the problem, but I am not sure.
