Firstly, is this even possible? There is only one external jack, mini display port.

Is there a way to get some kind of mini display port splitter and driver 2 external monitors on extended desktop mode? Active or non-active? I will not be using the "internal" laptop screen (lid will be closed), but want those 2 external monitors running as main desktop & desktop extended.

The monitors will only have VGA and DVI. I will be using DVI.

Thank you for intel in advance!

You will need some kind of external device that provides you with additional video output. Most likely, you're going to be stuck using a USB 3.0 display adapter or docking station to get that additional output.

Do you guys think the Dell External Video adapter via the USB would work?

In theory the integrated Intel gpu will have no issue driving 2 1080p screens. And I feel like this could be solution - One via default mini display + One via HDMI on the adapter.

    Yes, that would work too.

Anything that is essentially a USB 3.0 display adapter is what you need. The Dell Accessory you linked would work, as would sjgore's recommendation for a Dell 3100 docking station.

Would something like this work ?

Splitting the mini display port to triple HDMI outputs sounds pretty sweet to me.
This would also hopefully remove the lag when using USB 3 for video.

Crap, just had a brain fart, you need DVI, I only found one but it does *(Supposedly, according to the reviews I'm not sure)extend your desktop:

    Dual DVI:

I am using the EVGA DisplayLink Hub with my XPS.

I use a miniDP to DP cable between laptop and hub and then regular DP cables from the hub to a pair of Dell U2412M

Frustratingly, this doesn't quite work and I am struggling to work out why.

The first monitor works fine and the second exits sleep mode briefly then goes back into sleep mode.
Windows 10 built 10130 (latest Dell video drivers) sees both monitors and believes they are both running.

Does anyone else use this hub?
    Any ideas?

Just for future visitors sake... I attempted that adapter and the HDMI cable and the VGA cable take up too much space to have them both plugged in together.

I have one of those Dell USB to DVI/VGA adapters too (XPS 15 9550), I think it's called a DA10. It would definitely work for what the OP wants. It has a "DisplayLink" chipset onboard that works by copying the framebuffer from the Intel GPU (apparently it supports AMD and Nvidia too but I haven't tried that). You can't plug in both VGA and HDMI at the same time even if they did fit because the device only outputs one video signal at a time.

I have one screen plugged in to the onboard HDMI and the other into the HDMI port on the adapter. It works surprisingly well and uses the Intel GPU's hardware, the second screen shows up as if it was directly attached. I was expecting a USB video card and it's not quite that. It's even capable of displaying the image from the nvidia card via optimus, which is quite a feat really. This and the way it appears to the OS makes me pretty sure it's allocating it in the Intel gpu and then copying the framebuffer. I only paid about $30 for it so I'm happy.

    Hi,

I've a Dell XPS 13 laptop connected to Dell D1000 which I would like to connect to two UP2716D Dell monitors.

From the D1000 I have a single displayport to Monitor 1 and then daisy chained into Monitor 2.

I wish to extend the display across both displays but I am not sure whether this is possible using just one port on the D1000 and daisy chaining between the monitors.

I am currently daisy chaining between the two monitors (multi stream transport) using the displayports but I have duplicate screens now!

Can anyone shed some light on whether this is possible to do I need to use displayport for Monitor 1 and HDMI for Monitor 2?

    Thanks,

    Pedro

Nice monitors. 10-bit color monitors; 100% sRGB and 100% Adobe RGB color gamut; multiple inputs and a built-in USB hub with KVM functionality. I can see why they cost $650.

The best configuration for you is to connect your monitors to your laptop's Mini-DP output. Don't connect any monitors to your Dell D1000 dock.

The reason is that you're using two very high-resolution displays, which use a lot of bandwidth. Your Dell D1000 has to try and push all of that data through a single USB 3.0 port, which it simply cannot do. A single 2560x1440 @ 60Hz 10-bit color monitor uses 7.96Gbps. Double that for two daisy-chained monitors, to almost 16Gbps. Meanwhile, USB 3.0 maxes out at 5Gbps.

You paid a premium for two very high-end monitors, for what I assume will be used for photo / video work. Because of that, you need to make sure those monitors run optimally, without any sacrifice to resolution, color depth, refresh rate, or lag. The only way to do that with your current setup is to run them through your Mini-DP port on your laptop, and not through your Dell D1000 USB 3.0 docking station.

Your USB peripherals (keyboard, mouse, etc) can definitely be run through the Dell D1000 dock.

    Thanks Kent,

I took your advice and I went straight from the laptop to the monitor and then daisy chained and it works perfectly.

    Thanks once again.
