Will Apple come to your home/business to repair your notebook if it should fail? Will it send technicians to your home/business after hours or on weekends if you aren't available during normal hours?

I had an issue with my hard drive on my XPS 13 a week ago and not only did the technician come to my house on a weekend to replace the hard drive, but I found out that Dell has a policy that you can keep your hard drive and destroy it yourself so that you are in control over your sensitive data which maybe remain on the faulty hard drive.

It's easy to judge a manufacturer when things are going well. I like to judge a company when hits the fan and Dell is second to none when it comes to after sales service.

I'm 95% very pleased with the package. The software is basically transparent - install it and forget it. My only real issues are some inconsistencies on restore from sleep. Once in 6 or 7 times when I restore the second monitor doesn't resume (I run one monitor direct from the laptop and a second via the dynadock). I have to unplug/replug the USB cable to get video back.

Other than that - it is a great solution for me...

Just quoting you Bill so if you search you find this question. :)

Unrelated question. I have a kensington ultra compact notebook adapter and I cannot find a tip that works with my XPS13.

Here is a link to the adapter I have
Kensington - Laptop & Desktop - Laptop Power Chargers - Wall Ultra Compact Laptop Power Adapter

Anyone have any idea what tip I should try to get my hands on to be compatible with the XPS?

Troll elsewhere, please. I'm sure your opinion matters to someone, but I'm pretty sure no one here cares one bit about your love of the fruit and disdain of Dell.

Unfortunately, at this time there are no compatible aftermarket AC adapters or auto/air adapters. This is the first system since Adamo where we had a really tight Z height spec to hit, and none of our existing adapter tips and DC-in motherboard ports allowed for us to hit that spec. If you wait a bit, I'm sure something will hit the market. We've sold quite a few of these so far (maybe someday we can sell as many laptops as Apple...wait...nevermind), so there should be some pent up demand for the accessories when they become available.
    EDIT:
I forgot about another of our "obvious Apple knock offs" that was also thin- Latitude Z. We managed to get the standard adapter to fit there, but were not happy with the implementation.

I believe only a dell adaptor will charge the unit to prevent unsuitable adaptors working with the laptop and damaging it.

Any speculation on when the Ivy Bridge successor to this machine will come along and if it will have a 1600x900 or better screen?

Come on, spill the beans. :D

Intel said new ultrabooks should be announced during the 1st week of June, but already HP is announcing now new ivy bridge laptops...
No specific news regarding Dell... maybe that's a sign that something good is coming ?

I've joined this forum just so I can post this plea.

My XPS13 Ultrabook has appalling wi-fi sensitivity. It's easily 1/4 of my other laptops. I suspect it is due to the aluminum cover for the monitor shielding the wi-fi antenna that is housed with in it (like the Asus Transformer Prime suffered from). Is there any hope that a driver update will fix this? I accept the monitor is not the best, but it's the poor wi-fi that is really getting to me and I may send it back for a refund based on this.

I've noticed my XPS 13 has dramatically different WI-FI performance based on the router I'm connecting to. I travel regularly between 3 or 4 different routers of different manufacture and I get different results with each. Generally, what I've noticed is that connections on the 2.4GHz band are rock solid from long distances; Those that operate on the 5GHz band are much more finicky. I can set my laptop right next to my Belkin N750DB and only get 4 bars on the 5GHz network, while I can still get 5 bars across the street of the 2.4GHz band. My other laptops perform better on the 5GHz band than the XPS 13.

Anyway...to sum up my rambling...have you tried other routers to see how the XPS responds? Sometimes its just an old (or too new) router issue.

Have you tried updating the drivers off Dell's site? I switched over to the official Intel drivers on Intel.com and my wi-fi is rock solid.

Can this laptop do sound over diplayport? I just got a diplayport cable and swapped it over from HDMI which had been running the sound through my 3008WFP monitor but no sound with the displayport cable. In control panel > sound > playback all I see is the default speakers, any ideas?

Can't seem to find the Light sensor option. When I go to Location settings, the only options are: Turn on the Windows location platform and Help improve Microsoft Location services.

I have a clean install of Windows.

    Can anybody help?

I don't really think the author makes compelling arguments... his best reason:

"While application performance and battery life will likely see only modest gains, integrated graphics performance is much improved, which is handy if you're looking for the ability to play games on a non-gaming machine. "

Then he lumps in all kinds of large laptops, then calls the HP Folio the best in the Ultrabook segment if you don't mind thick (ignores weight).

If you buy an Ultrabook - you want portability and performance. If you buy a gaming rig you want a power and a decent screen. Buying the XPS 13 as a gaming machine is silly - unless you connect to an external monitor - but then why buy a laptop, or why not a bigger laptop? If you are more then a casual gamer, you probably don't need ultralightweight - you are going to be in a gaming environment with a gaming mouse, chair, sound, etc. For Casual gaming, the current gen seems good enough - but I don't think most buyers of this machine are buying it for this reason.

I think IvyBridge will add some features, but if you wait for it - and it could be another 3-5 months, then what is going to be announced then? A newer, faster, less power hungry processor.

Oh, and Windows 8 will then hit in October, so hold off on that IvyBridge until the Win8 machines come out.

Hello old friends. I have finally retired the M1330 (it served me well) and just got the XPS 13. Naturally I blew it away and did a fresh install. I now have one "unknown device" and for the life of me I cannot figure out which device it is. I have installed ALL the drivers from the Dell site but none of the applications.

no idea - Win 8 is not supported yet - so not sure what you can do. It sounds like it doesn't like driver for the ambient light sensor is not working. You will probably just have to manually increase the brightness when you need to.

If you right click on the device in device manager and look through anything that is reported in the details or drivers tab - that may give you a clue.

You missed something, but I am not sure what.

Ah. That's too bad. But thanks anyway :)
First no to-finger scrolling not working in Win8, and now the light sensor. Dumb choice of me to install a beta OS as the primary OS. But then, the "problems" will be solved later this year.

To access the ambient light sensor (I assume that's what you're looking for in Windows 8), follow these instructions:
    1. Click on the battery icon in your taskbar.
    2. Click on 'More power options'
    3. Click 'Change plan settings' for the active power plan.
    4. Click 'Change advanced power settings'.
    5. Scroll down to and expand 'Display'.
    6. Under 'Display', locate 'Enable adaptive brightness'.
    7. Turn it on/off as desired.

Bill mentioned another upcoming driver for the touchpad -- I bet that will address our Windows 8 problems.

Something kinda neat that I've noticed on my xps regarding the ambient light sensor...I normally have it on, so it plays with my brightness. If I key up the brightness a couple of steps, the ambient light sensor will still adjust it up or down - sometimes annoying, but sometimes just right. However, if I set my brightness all the way up and keep tapping the key a few more times past max brightness, I get a little popup window saying something like 'Dell adaptive brightness is now off'. The laptop then stops using the light sensor until the machine is either plugged in, or the lid is closed. Neat!

Does anyone sell a gizmo that makes it easier to connect this up to a "desktop" configuration?

In the old days they were called docking stations or port replicators.

Right now I have to make the following connections every time I want to use it at my desk:

USB for keyboard, mouse, and printer (Yeah I know I should just upgrade to wireless devices)
    Power
    Monitor
    Speakers

I’ve had this ultrabook for about 45 days now. There are many things I like about, mainly the SSD and the small & lightweight size which is why I choose the ultrabook in the first place. There are some things that I’m impartial to, such as the touchpad (that seems to be fidgety) and screen (which should angle down more). All and all, I really like the machine and I’d consider it money well spent with one exception… the buzzing noise. Here’s my story so far:

Day 1: I got the machine early March, and right out of the box I thought it was well made and presented. I turned it on and my initial impressions were good but I only had a few minutes to play with it. I plugged it in and set it to the side of me. Within a minute I realized something was buzzing and then it became alarmingly loud buzzing. After a couple seconds I realized it was coming from the charger so I simply unplugged it. I called Dell support about the issue and after stating many times that the power brick was the issue I was told that we would need to troubleshoot this even though it was clearly the charger. I was told that a new charger would be sent to correct the issue.

Day 2: I was able to spend some more time on ultrabook and again, I like everything about it, but while unplugged a noticed a similar noise to what the charger has. Now the noise is coming from the upper part of the keyboard and the vent area of the backside of the book. I updated the bios and drivers in hopes of it being a simple fix, it was not.

One thing I also noticed was that even if the unit is completely 100% off the noise can still be made by simply plugging in a USB device that needs power, or by testing the power level on the side of the book. A lot of people have issues with the fan, this is clearly not a fan issue and to be honest I’ve personally not had a big issue with the fans except the fact that they turn on with seemingly light loads.

So I call up Dell support again and we troubleshoot the issue, including a tech taking over control of the device. The problem persists, and while I did not ask for a replacement I was offered a replacement for the ultrabook. I was assured that the issue was taken care of in the new one that would be sent. So, now there is a new charger on the way and a new unit being built at this point. Within a couple days I got the new charger and initially it was much quieter but it was still a Flextronics model and over time it’s developed the same buzzing. That noise is quite maddening. We’re back to square one, a buzzing charger and a buzzing ultrabook.

Weeks 2-3: I receive the new unit. I open the box, unwrap the unit, and push the power button and now the noise is worse on the second unit. Also, there was a Flextronics charger again. So, now we are on buzzing charger #3 and buzzing ultrabook #2. I call up support again and state my case and we go through all the troubleshooting again. It was determined that the motherboard is bad and that a tech would be out to replace the motherboard on the 2nd unit I received and that will fix the problem.

The next day a Dell tech came out and attempted to replace the motherboard. The first screw he tried to take out snapped his screwdriver. Unfortunately it was late in the day, so we rescheduled for the next morning. Overnight he had bought a replacement screwdriver and arrived on time the next day. He attempted to remove the same screw and snapped the new screwdriver. I suggested a couple places to get a new one and within 30 minutes he was back and armed again with new tools. The screwdriver issues are no fault to him, he was very nice and I felt bad for the situation, he was a nice and knowledgeable tech.

The tech had successfully replaced the motherboard and as soon as he turned it on, the same buzzing noise was recognizable instantly. Then the tech called support and we tried doing a few things to determine the source of the noise. We went as far as removing the SSD and removing the battery and then powering up the unit with it plugged in. Same noise.

So now we are on charger #3, and ultrabook #2 with motherboard #2. I was now told that I would need to send the 2nd unit into the service / repair center for it to be fixed. I fill out the repair form with a quick synopsis of the issue and I wrote a couple times “This is not a fan issue, this is not the fan noise issue” in all caps.

Weeks 4-5: I’m still using the first unit that came to me and I still like everything about it except for this buzzing noise. I really like the speed and portability of this system, but the noise is just a bit to deal with.

The repaired unit #2 (on its 2nd motherboard) is back. I open the box and look at the repair summary and it said “The following parts were replaced/repaired on your system”: [X] Fan. Even though I wrote a couple times “This is not a fan issue, this is not the fan noise issue” in all caps, the fan was replaced. This is surreal at this point to me, honestly it completely blew my mind. Also, now the unit is even louder than before somehow.

On the plus side, even though I sent in a Flextronics charger, the repaired unit #2 was sent back with a Lite-On charger that seems to be working well. It’s weird how that issue worked itself out but I’ll take it.

I call Dell again, and the person on the other end knew they had messed up after he said: “I see that you have the new unit. You wrote that the noise was not the fans, the Dell tech that came to your house and myself all said it was not a fan noise… and it looks like they replaced the fan”. Even though I did not ask for it, the tech later said they were going to send a third unit soon of which I am assured the issue will be alleviated now.

Today: Well, I’m waiting for my 3rd notebook to be shipped. I have little faith the issue will be corrected though I still have a pinch of optimism left in me.

To Dell’s credit, I’ve never seen a company try this hard to correct an issue at their expense without the customer asking for it. Had they said “the annoying buzzing noise is by design, deal with it”, I probably could of saved them a few hundred dollars. This is my first Dell, and I’ve only bought one, so I honestly feel that they are legitimately going out of their way to fix the issue though I don’t know if the issue is fixable.

Sorry for the long read, but I had to get it off my chest.

Are you in the UK? I could have written half of that message myself!!!

This week I've had a tech out this week to resolve my "buzzing" issue. My issue is identicle to yours, although mine now buzzes even when it's completely off and nothing is attached. I too asked on here about the problem and got nearly no response appart from one person who got a replacement unit and was happy.

I have no complaints about the tech they sent out at all I must state. The service has been good.

    He replaced:
Keyboard (I had a sticky shift key)
    Fan
    Mobo
    Flextronix charger for Liteon

We tried various things after swapping out all of the parts immediately. The noise was still there. He called up support and we disconnected a few things and then the screen. When the screen was removed the noise was significantly reduced, to the point of being normal so he came back a few days later with a new screen. We tried it without taking the old one off just disconnecting it. The noise remained so we decided that the new screen was not worth fitting and he called support to say he had tried and I wanted a replacement.

The liteon charger itself is silent so far and also we tried it with the battery disconnected and just the new Liteon AC charger connected, no difference.

A new unit is on it's way to me but will take 7-10 days.

I feared that people have this problem and don't notice it, but in a way I'm happy you have it too and have been going through the same process, I just hope it's not just "how it is.." I really do think it is a component problem with perhaps a dodgy batch of motherboards or parts of them.

Have you noticed that in sleep when the lite "breathes" the noise goes up and down? Also as the screen turns off the noise drops dramatically. This is what leaves me to believe it is a component in the power supply on the board. When the back is off the unit and you listen closely the noise seems to be coming from between the chipset and cpu I think. I'm tempted to take it appart myself and try to diagnose it before I hand this unit back :)

    Good luck!

    I'm in the U.S.

Absolutely. I know the pulsing noise you're talking about, it's a really weird noise too. I've never heard that specific "breathing" type noise in any other electronic device before.

I agree with your thought on it coming from the power supply area. With the unit 100% off, simply hitting that little button to see the remaining power, you can replicate some of the noise. I just don't see any other components that would be tied to that function that would be emitting that noise.

Overall, based on previous motherboard experience, the best way I can describe the problem is that it's a bad capacitor. If you've ever had one go bad on a desktop PC, this is a very similar noise.

I think I have a similar issue although I don't know if buzzing would be the word to describe it, it's kind of like the noise a seeking hard drive makes but with a bit more 'squeek'? it doesn't happen all the time either. I assumed it was a noise that all of them would have made and just lived with. It's the type of noise I could imagine some peoples ears would be more sensitive to than others as well so maybe it's more common but not an issue for some people.

Just a quick post to thank everyone for this thread. Got my brand new XPS13 last Tuesday and have pretty much followed all the advice that's been listed here and have it running quite happily at present. :) Will keeping tabs on this thread for any future developments or if I face any issues myself.

    @Dell-Bill

If you are compiling features that we would like to see.... how about some kind of backlight around the edge of the trackpad.

The downside to it being so flush and the same color as the background, is that i can't find the edge in the dark or low light. If you use the edge scroll function, you find yourself trying to scroll off the side very often.
