Last I heard late September/early October timeframe, around W8 release (hope I can get it with W7 though). Yes unconfirmed rumors, but I'm holding out too. :D
I can't see them going much longer anyway with 2011 sandy bridge hardware. Real question is will they actually serve up 900p and 8GB...I would think they have to being that late to the ivy bridge party.

Yeah, that's the usual problem of the business with UK! :(

Excellent information, also if I would prefer with W7 too! ^^
Uhmm, in fact those features should to be required! :s

guys can anyone help me with the problem I'm having where the computer is draining battery in its sleep? I don't want to make it hibernate every time because that ruins the fast booting option.

why does this computer eat battery in its sleep while computers like the MBA go for weeks?

Hell, my 4 year old toshiba could go for weeks in standby...

    Help me!

I may have to try again, but my problem was very real - neither GUI or F6 worked for adjusting back light.

I don't understand. Why wouldn't you use rapid start instead of sleep?

how do I change my settings to rapidstart? I thought rapidstart was just the terminology intel attached to any computer that is able to awaken from sleep in a couple of seconds.

    *edit

after doing a bit more research I have come to the conclusion that my computer was not configured for rapid-start from the beginning. I only have the option to have the computer sleep, or hibernate. I don't see any option for rapid start.... What can I do?

The bolded items add cost, and you would be our target customer for the M14x, I'm guessing. :) If the AW looks are off-putting, perhaps the XPS 14 or 15 are more suitable?

Since posting that comparison i do now realise the extra cost is generated from it simply being more slimmer and portable than anything else and it going with a more mac book air style, which i do like actually. I have done more research into it and have discovered the high level of build quality and how having to use smaller parts to squeeze it together, ie the new msata ssd's bump the cost up.

Even though it may seem strange the two laptops im looking at right now are the m14x and xps 13. Im wanting to go with the xps 13 though i think, as thinking of my IT career for the future i would like something that looks professional.

One question i have for you Bill, is when the xps 13 will be refreshed with ivy b cpu's? And will it have any upgrades as in a higher res screen (900p) or more ram (8gb)?

Thanks for your continued posting and general helpfulness in these forums Bill. Since ive been a dell customer the service has always been 1st class i must say.

Most welcome. I enjoy this stuff.

As far as when, I can't even hint right now. You can fairly assume a different screen and IB. RAM I don't know about. I think with the SSD performance and the ability to create a really fast page file on it, there's not a huge demand for more RAM. I know there are many scenarios where more is needed, and if you threw up a poll on this site, 4GB would get about 1 vote for every 50 8GB votes, but this bunch on NBR is waaaayyyy more savvy and tech oriented than 99% of the typical XPS 13 buyers.

Nice to know a screen upgrade is possible. Thats fine about a timeframe, i dont have the money at the minute anyway. I understand what you mean about ram and for the majority, yes 4gb will be plenty for a portable ultrabook user. The only reason i would like 8gb is to use the 13 on my travels to run VM's on so i can do some mobile labbing on win 7 enterprise and win server 2008r2. As im currently studying for my 70-680 microsoft certification and will be on 685/6/7 later. And comptia a+, n+ and s+.

    8GB X
    4GB
Dell has to match the macair's options, it's the direct competitor and has been out for a month already. Ridiculous that PC manufacturers can't keep pace. At least 720p is on its way out...slowly.

    The best upgrade would be:
    1. Ivy Bridge
    2. 1600x900 screen resolution
    3. Double mSATA (6 Gb/s) in RAID 0 mode (this tempts me a lot... :p :p )
    4. 8 Gb Ram (but this is not so essential to me)

    :D

P.S. But please, don't change the design! ;)

I knew it was VM's. :) Now I wonder myself. Will have to look it up when I'm back in the office tomorrow.

It won't be a function of inventory. Think big picture and the "ecosystem." ;)

Yo, non-owners and future XPS 13 "reviewers" - any chance you all would open a "Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook Wishlist" thread, and leave this thread to tips and problems for folks that own today's machine?

Well as no new version of the xps 13 is announced all info regarding the 13, todays and future machine is relevant in this thread. Untill they give us a new model no or something i dont think anyone will or should open a new thread. As owners of it today can post what they dont like or what doesnt work then dell can refer to all the info in one place and make it better for everyone, wether its new hardware in a refresh or driver/bios updates for the current owners. If you have any problems dont let talk of what people want in the future machine overpower your query. As granted, the thread title is xps 13 OWNERS thread.

The xps 17 threads and many others are the same with people asking about a next model and what they want different or better. So you'll just have to put up with it im afraid.

Nope. It looks like it activates along with wifi, so the only way to turn it off is to turn off wifi entirely...

Must apologize. My comment was misleading. Forget ecosystem. It'll be sooner than that.

Hint: Don't buy the S9 based on RAM alone. We'll be fine.

I think there's a BT-off option in the Dell customized section of Windows Mobility Center (WinKey+X).

With Thinkpad releasing its X1Carbon sometime After August 20th, it would be interesting to see Dell put out an upgraded display option for its XPS 13 soon after that. Upgradable RAM would be nice too, even if it is only 1 DIMM. I think a properly configured XPS 13 could give the carbon a run for its money, as I expect the Lenovo to be shockingly expensive and the Carbon will not even have an IPS display.

BTW, Dell is getting close to my original configuration. ;)

I'm not 100% sure you are looking for the same form factor as Bronsky is. From following your comments, I deduce the XPS 13 with more RAM and better screen is what you're looking for. If I'm right, see you on the XPS 13 refresh speculation thread next month. Too soon for me to jump in one now, so just hang out a bit. :)

    Not necessarily... ;)

I mean ... because of the natural depreciation of the old technology with Sandy Bridge. The cost of upgrading may be similar...

In any case! The natural devaluation of the things has to come into play somewhere else, otherwise, with two or three updates, you should buy an XPS twice the normal price! The mechanism is such as that of the various generations of iPhone that follow one another. The price of the top of the range remains roughly the same. ;)

Has anyone been successful in deleting the recovery partition? I just backed it up onto a USB key and I don't need it eating up 14 gigs of space anymore.

I tried the typical procedures in diskpart, but it is refusing to allow me to delete the partition....

Any way to know what bios I'm running without a reboot. Sorry I'm not that tech savy.

Also what's the best procedure for getting trackpad to run at its best. I've read this whole thread, but still not sure. I'm not looking for fancy; just good 2 finger scrolling. It seems pretty intermittent. It seems to not work until webpage is fully loaded. Is that normal?

Can also just type "msinfo32" into the start/search box and hit enter. I think it's the same screen referred to above, but a different way to get there.

Hey there, new to the forum, just got my xps 13 and loving it UNTIL: Some kind of weird display issue going on, pink vertical line all the way down the right hand side of the screen. Have tried running diagnostics in BIOS and its appears on every screen. Anyone got any info on this, similar issues, or miraculous cures?
    Cheers

Hi all. Got my XPS 13 ultra notebook today. All good except with the fact that the bottom right corner does not sit flat on my table when the LID is opened. Now, when the lid is closed, the rubber fit in the front are flat to my table. But when I open the lid, the bottom right rubber fit stands up a bit. Little annoying when you are typing and can feel that that corner is not secured to the table with my palm. Is this happening with your XPS 13? Thanks.
