Anyone have any updates or solutions yet for the less-than-wonderful CYPRESS trackpad?

I am on version 2.5.0.52 from DELL (all located here: Drivers for XPS 13 (L321X)) and have installed TouchFreeze ( touchfreeze - Utility for Windows to disable touchpad automatically while you are typing text - Google Project Hosting)

. . . but the two- and multi-finger features are still not working, and the scrolling continues to be jumpy as a mouse on coffee . . .

Anyone else find a better, workable solution yet? I am contemplating rolling back to version 2.3.6.25, the "A00" option, with TouchFreeze just to get multi-finger features back . . .

Dell has released version 2.5.3.35 for the cypress trackpad and I have it installed. For me, it has been much better. My favorite part of the update is the ability to do a "2-finger click" to perform a right-click. Right now I have my left and right trackpad buttons set to "click". Also the palm rejection seems to be much improved.

( Direct link to download page for those that want it: Driver Details | Dell United States)

Oh, a fresh driver, released 1-9-2013, how tantalizing . . . but yet ultimately unsatisfying! ;)

I just spent an hour fiddling with it and never got it to work.

    - Uninstalled the current Cypress software via Programs

    - Removed the "Cypress" device via the Device Manager

    - Rebooted, confirmed that Windows 7 x64 reverted back to "PS/2 Mouse"

    - Tried installing the new driver using the "Cypress Setup" from the downloaded files

    - Install goes, reboot

    - On startup, received the (now) classic to me situation, where you boot back in, and still have the "PS/2 Mouse" in the Device Manager; no Cypress

    - Tried uninstall/re-install several times of Cypress installer program; no joy

    - Attempt to Update Drivers via Device Manager, pointing it directly at the new 2.5.3.35 Cypress driver folders

    - Appears to update drivers, but on reboot - - trackpad does not work AT ALL. Have to use USB mouse to uninstall

    - And so on . . .

Tried several variations of this, with even one result of a briefly non-working keyboard (!)

    Suggestions, anyone?

My best working hypothesis is that there are multiple Cypress trackpad hardware versions at work here, maybe?? That might be why I can seemingly install the drivers, but then it essentially disables the trackpad?

I am using an XPS 13 (L321X) - - anyone who manages to get this new driver to install mind sharing their HardwareIDs from the Cypress Trackpads? Might help me out . . .

    Thanks!!

    -J

Nuance is running a beta for a version of their Dragon speech recognition software on the XPS 13 and XPS 13 MLK. Feedback can be submitted from within the software.

Disclosure: I work with Dell, but not on this project. I'm just publicizing the beta for some colleagues.

    jmashby,
It sucks to hear that you weren't able to get the new driver installed. When did the installation, I used an external mouse so that I can uninstall the old Cypress driver. I restarted it and then I installed the new 2.5.3.35 driver. Then I restarted it again and everything worked fine. My HardwareID for the Cypress Trackpad is ACPI\DLL052E. Hope it helps, good luck.

Forget it. I placed an order on 14th of December for Ivy Bridge model, still haven`t got my laptop. Absolutely fu***n Dell, I wish they go bankrupt and go to hell. I have been Dell fan for last 11 years and had only Dells, its is last drop, they can f*** themselves. I have heard so many excuses now - oh its been misplaced, oh its not in stock, oh this and that. Hate them.

To be fair, I'd see it as a blessing in disguise. With the IPS screen coming in very soon, getting the TN display version would seem like a waste.

The power settings for the wireless adapter were both set to Maximum Performance. I followed the link and installed the latest network driver from the Dell website. With my service tag number, latest driver is dell network driver 15.2.0.19 A02 (for Intel Centrino Advanced N 6230 cards).

After reboot, It did not make any difference. Is there a procedure to verify the wifi antenna is in place?

I have the laptop for over a week now and it's running 7/24. I am using an external wireless keyboard (logitech solar) and mouse (logitech performance mx), as I am using it with external display and want the laptop display closed and laptop tucked away. I have all the power options in Win7 set to put it to sleep, but there is no option I can find to have it wake up from sleep other than the power button on the laptop which is not accessible if lid is closed.
    Any solution to this?
    TIA

I now own 1 of the two XPS M1330's i was working on. A friend of mine has company who more or less leases out machine with their service. i got to work on two of the machines and keep one. Every single one of them has been a complete piece of .

they all fail updates and blue screen or corrupt windows (win 7)/ At first i thought hardware and blamed ram, the one i'm suing defintly failed prime 95 so i got different ram and tried switching the order they are installed in which helped some (this is on MINE with intel gfx). I then checked out the Event view on BOTH m1330s....

Even after clean installed that have errors, warnings and critical errors galore, also failed updates galore.
Speed step errors, Lan drive failures, failed updates, etc etc.
Now i could see it being some kind of BGA (solder ball) problem and them needing reflowed but, the kicker is 1 is intel gfx and the other in Nvidia, even funnier the Nvidia one is more stable and show no signs of BGA failure. they both share the same errors and warning in event viewer from what i used of the nividia one it failed fewer updates if at all, but had the same weird weird speed step and lan errors in event viewer.

I never got to see the others but, i bet they probably have around 10-15 units though i'm just guessing. they said the xps m1330 were the worst dells they have ever had. (they almost exclusively dell).

    /rant

I am curios if any one has worked with any one had, had this issue before and knew if it some sort of driver issue or what?

First owner of a very early XPS 13 i5-2467 ultrabook. It had been "on display" at Best Buy since March 14, 2012 so presumably has NEVER had any updates of any kind. Geek Squad removed their software and restored Windows 7 to it's original configuration prior to my pickup from store on Jan 27, 2013.

I spent two days plowing through this Owner's Thread to familiarize myself with the issues - and am now ready to turn it on for the first time. Because of anticipated poor touchpad performance, I plan to stay offline long enough to install a USB-mouse. I have the URLs for Dells' updates. I notice AO7 appears to be the most recent BIOS update, and there are different numbers of other updates depending whether I specify my Dell Service Tag or just XPS 13 (L321X).

I anticipate Windows 7 will want to update itself mightily - at the same time I want to update my BIOS to solve the old bugs re: touchpad & fan operation. I presume I should just let Windows 7 update itself first - before updating my BIOS to A07 plus other Dell updates? (Is BIOS A07 what I want for my ten month-old, "low-end" XPS 13 ?)

    Thanks for any guidance.

I bought a similar XPS 13 -- an 8 month old 1st gen demo from Sam's Club (for US $470).

What you're suggesting is exactly what I did, followed by an install of all the latest updates from Dell. The result is a machine that runs fine, has decent but sometimes frustrating touchpad control, but generally works as well as any of the many laptops I have owned.

If you ignore any expectation for Dell's claims for 8-9 hour battery life, you'll be even happier. I get ~4-6 hours under most conditions of use.

i have an early i5-2467M with all the latest drivers and updates. i was wondering if anyone was using their laptop to do any recording. i'm having an audio problem when i connect my m-audio fast track. this happens whether i'm using the monitors or headphones. it actually sounds scratchy like a bad connection, but everything is plugged in correctly. it's not the unit itself either, because everything sounds fine when using my desktop.

**Update - problem fixed when i plugged into the 2.0 instead of the 3.0. Is that odd?

Am I the only one who thinks $300 for the 1080p screen is a bit over the top? I really hope it is standard on the Haswell refresh of the XPS 13, It's one of the better ultrabooks out there if they throw that screen on default, maybe add touch.

The recently released Cypress Trackpad software 2.5.3.35 is VASTLY better than its predecessors but it still has one big problem: it detects "phantom clicks" frequently while I'm typing (too many to count during the typing of this post alone!). As I will explain, I have mucked around with every setting and I believe that there's simply no way to set things such that this doesn't happen. As I will explain, initially I was thinking that the issue was that a setting that could preclude the problem was missing but my empirical results indicate that setting wouldn't solve the problem. In the end, I think the trackpad software is not simply missing a feature, I think it's buggy as well--either that or the hardware itself is flawed.

As things stand now, I truly hate this trackpad it makes the user experience of this entire Dell XPS absolutely miserable for me. Unfortunately for me, this is a work machine and I have no choice but to use it; however, as things stand now, I would ditch this thing in a heartbeat if I could. I haven't used a mouse in YEARS (sure, on public computers, when helping others, what have you but not on my machine) but in light of the fact that the trackpad doesn't function reliably in the expected manner (it's closer to functioning reliably in the UNexpected manner!), I have little choice but to start using a mouse--and that undercuts the portability that is at the core of a laptop's value proposition!

Let me explain my experience a little further: sometimes when I'm typing, a click event is registered on the trackpad. This is a MAJOR deal: phantom clicks can cause all kinds of unintentional behaviors from text being typed in unintended places (when the click moves the text insertion point) to buttons and links being clicked that cause data loss or even unintended data transmission (email sent unintentionally or web forms submitted unintentionally). This is far from a minor annoyance: this is in fact a major functional flaw that can have severely bad repercussions.

I believe these phantom clicks are generated from my palm (almost always my right palm) touching the trackpad while I'm typing and I don't believe that there is any way I can set the trackpad settings to preclude the issue. Here is why:

    • It seems to me that, if it were implemented properly, simply turning on Palm Rejection should completely eliminate the problem. Unfortunately, I can't tell that turning on Palm Rejection has any impact whatsoever and if it does have some kind of impact, it certainly does NOT have the impact of preventing the issue. There's a sliding scale associated with it; it's not entirely clear if the - or the + side is the one that sets the Palm Rejection to be the most aggressive and the app doesn't provide any guidance on this but in any event, I have tried it with the setting all the way to the + side, which I think should be the most palm rejection, and I have also tried it with the setting all the way to the - side and the issue occurs either way with no discernible difference in frequency.
    • I have the "Tap to click" option turned off; this should mean that in order for the trackpad to register a click event, I should have to press hard enough on the trackpad to actually click it (an audible click, not just a dull tap or no sound at all). When my palm makes contact with the trackpad, it is NEVER with enough pressure to click it; as such, the phantom clicks should not be coming from accidentally touching the trackpad hard enough to click it.

    • Unfortunately, the buttons register not only clicks but also taps: lightly brushing against them, NOT actually clicking them (in other words, no sound at all, certainly not an audible click), can be registered as a tap that will engage them (that is cause them to perceive a phantom click). By the way, I've found that the situation can be helped, but not eliminated, by cranking up the Touch Pressure setting--but then the trackpad becomes harder to use for intentionally moving the pointer around the screen! I was initially thinking that if the buttons had a "Tap to click" option like the trackpad, that would be sufficient to solve the problem but I no longer think that: while certainly the developers need to add a "Tap to click" option for the buttons, I have found that the problem exists even when I set the buttons to the "Do Nothing" option.

So as I said, I don't believe that there is any way I can set the trackpad settings to preclude the issue. Further, since the problem happens even when I have the buttons disabled (set to "Do Nothing") and I have "Tap to click" turned off for the trackpad, I have to conclude that either the software is buggy or the trackpad itself is faulty.

This is such a shame because it doesn't have to be like this: it's sure not like this on my MacBook nor was it on either of my previous 2 MacBooks (this is the first Windows machine I've used in years so I can't compare to that). Now, I'll note that I have had this exact same problem on my MacBooks--but on those, simply turning off the "Tap to click" setting immediately and permanently resolved the problem. The truth is that it ought to be just as easy here! I just don't get it--do they not do real world tests on this stuff?!? I have big hands and I do see that the palm of my right hand hits the trackpad in the right button area so I imagine people with smaller hands wouldn't experience this issue but still: surely it can't be all that uncommon--after all, they put in that whole Palm Rejection feature for a reason, didn't they? As a side note: computer manufacturers' relentless insistence on putting the trackpad right in the middle of the laptop doesn't help either: if it were shifted slightly to the left, it would fall between users' hands instead of partially under our right hands. As I said, this is just a side note: moving the trackpad isn't the way to solve the issue, making the trackpad work properly is the way to solve the issue.

I've dug around in the registry and I can see that there are tons of keys in there for the trackpad and they all have pretty good descriptive names (nice work, Cypress developers!) but none of them seem to me that they would enable "Tap to click" for the buttons. Cypress developers: if you're listening and there is something in there that I could alter or even a registry key I could add, I'm more than comfortable doing that, just let me know.

As I said, I have found that setting the buttons to "Do Nothing" doesn't prevent the problem but if you'd like to try your hand at it, you should know that if you turn on "Two Finger Click for Shortcut Menu" you'll get a better way to get get the shortcut menu (which is the traditional default behavior of the right button) than the right button. With that on, you can both click and right-click on the trackpad itself so you won't lose any functionality by turning the buttons to "Do Nothing." Unfortunately, what you will lose is the ability to click with one hand and drag with the other: if you need to move something on the screen, you have to both click and drag with the same finger on the trackpad, and you must keep the that finger pressed down to keep the trackpad clicked because as soon as you release the click, you will "drop" whatever you were dragging. I vastly prefer to handle moving something on the screen by clicking it with the left button with my left hand and then dragging it with my index finger on my right hand; by doing that, I don't have to engage the click with my right index finger (in fact, I can't even engage the click with my right index finger because my left hand already has the click engaged) and, because I'm holding the click with my left hand, the item I'm dragging will not be released until I release the button with my left hand--so even if I move my right finger off the trackpad, the item won't be dropped (bear in mind that sometimes this is critical: if you're moving the item a big distance, you might run out of trackpad and have to pick up your finger and move it back off the trackpad so you can then put it back on the trackpad and move the item farther). So: setting the mouse buttons to "Do Nothing" has a serious drawback and given that in my experience it doesn't prevent the problem, it's not worth doing--but if you find otherwise, more power to you!

I have visited Cypress's website trying to find a way to submit this information to them but I can't find an appropriate way to do that.

And finally: please, nobody tell me that my typing teacher would simply tell me to sit up straight and keep my palms up. Yes, I should do those things--but this trackpad should work properly too!

I created an account just to reply to you post. I have the same problem but found that the touchfreeze application helped me significantly. YMMV, but it was a huge reduction in phantom clicks for me (I had none while typing this reply). All the application does is lock out the touchpad while typing is happening.

It is available at touchfreeze - Utility for Windows to disable touchpad automatically while you are typing text - Google Project Hosting and is free, although a donation would help your karma. I'm running version 1.0

P.S. I have no affiliation with the package, just a happy user.

Thanks for the tip, hiknmike! I'm using it now. It sounds like it will help a lot.

Now that said, the fact that a 3rd party utility can solve my problem (provided that is in fact true) should not be construed by the Cyrpress developers as an excuse to not have to work to make their touchpad function properly. Further, just adding in the functionality of touchfreeze isn't the answer either: the touchpad needs to have the ability to set everything to require a click (the ability to turn off "Tap to click" for everything) and thereupon it needs to not sense clicks unless there actually is a bona fide click.

If USB 3 is next to headphone jack, then yes I have - if I plug my mouse nano receiver, my mouse doesn`t work properly.

I just installed BIOS A08 and now rapid start doesn't work properly - I don't notice a full powerdown, and the laptop doesn't resume from sleep - if the time has moved it into hibernate - although the light blinks like it is in sleep.

    Anyone else see this?

I disabled in device manager both bluetooth items +disabled N mode and changed to 2.4 GHz only. It has helped a lot, massive improvement.

Hi, i recently purchased a xps 13 l322x, now with the news that it is being released with a 1080p screen, i was wondering how much it would cost to upgrade the display assembly to the new 1080p one, as i cant seem to find a price online.

Since, due to the Gorilla Glass bonding process, the screen is a hinge-up kit only, you would have to go through Dell Spare Parts and pay their price, which will most likely be too high. I doubt- but could be wrong- any aftermarket supplier will come up with a hinge-up kit. I guess you could Google around for hinge up kits for XPS 13/14/15 to see if any aftermarket supplier has one. If they do, I guess there's hope.

Ok - I'm kind of confused... What is the "model" number of the new 1080p unit? Or is it the same model?
The linkage on the Dell site says L321x, so they went backwards in numbers?

And what is with everyone ignoring the 14" class for 1920x1080?
I like this one, but fear 13.3" will be rather small..

15.6" is getting kind of big, and most are 5.5lbs+

I'd love a 14" 1920x1080 i7-3517U, 8Gb RAM, 256GB SSD (128Gb SSD would also work) Ultrabook at 3.3lbs and be happy ALL DAY.

Any retailers carrying the FHD XPS13 yet?
I'd like to see that 13.3" FHD in person. Daily work is on dual 23" FHD screens, so it's only during travel that I'd have to stare down the 13.3" FHD screen.

    Hi,

I am really confused too on the screen! Look at my chat with Dell rep.(Agent)

But for the price the deal (brand new laptop) is very very tempting. If this laptop has issues with stability (freezing of application and poor wi-fi connectivity) I might hold on and do my homework.

Did Dell finally ironed out all the bugs?

02/13/2013 05:35:07PM Eric: "So the screen resolution can exceed (bigger than ) 1366x768?"
02/13/2013 05:36:10PM Agent (Amitha S): "No Eric that is the maximum we have on these systems"

02/13/2013 05:57:07PM Agent (Amitha S): "Both the XPS 13 have the same dimensions as we do not have the XPS 13z"

What kind of battery life are you guys getting when you just use word processor and web browsing on the XPS 13? With brightness set somewhat low? I am super interested in this laptop if it can get over 6 hours of battery life consistently.

It depends..... What screen brightness and what websites.... lots of sites have flash and you can hear the fan kick on when you visit them for a while or have lots of tabs open. I would say it would be hard to get 6 hours as most websites pull down a lot of crap, and any blogs or news sites would have flash stuff.

If you turn off wifi and just do word processing and visit nothing but static web pages then probably 6 hours. When I keep wifi off and use my laptop for OneNote in meetings i can go all day, but i do close the lid when not actively using it.

Not really - the Dynadock and others are in that price range. I love my Dynadock - i can hook up 2 monitors, and all kinds of peripherals. I only have 1 usb connection to PC and it works better then any docking station i have used in the past.

I thought all 8GB RAM are soldered? Here stands 1 4GB RAM is removable and max. 8GB RAM are supported...

If that is half true - maybe i can change a second 8GB RAM module to have 12GB RAM:::

So, I have been looking on the Dell website for the model with 1080p. It appears that only the Ubuntu/Developer Edition is available with the 1080p screen. I actually like that spec alot. Are there any other configurations available with 1080p?

EDIT: Nevermind, I was looking in SOHO.

In any case that Ubuntu Developer edition is basically the same specs as the $1599 config, but without windows and $50 less. Cool.

Hi, XPS 13 (1080p) owner here.
I can't say I'm impressed with Dell's selection of function keys...

Question : How do I disable the trackpad when using an external mouse ?

Received my 1080P XPS 13 last week very impressed with the build quality and finish. The display is truly amazing and the system is really responsive and fast.
I am not really a fan of Win 8 and I am really considering formatting and installing with Win 7 Ultimate, anyone here format and install Win 7 Without an issue? and does Rapid start still work without a hitch.
