As the subject states, my fan will not turn off. Everything was running great, then about a week ago, after installing MS updates, my fan will not turn off no matter what I'm doing.
I'm sure it was an update but am not sure how to go about fixing. I know I can just start uninstalling updates till the fan turns off but if there is a better way that would be great.
Thanks for any advice in advance.

try using i8kfangui and toggle the settings

Same thing happened to me. Basically, it started with a heat issue on the GPU and when the update for that was pushed to your computer, it started the weird fan issue. Update to the latest BIOS (I tried to post a link here, but they won't let me since i don't have 15 posts) and you should be okay. The fan will be on more, but it won't be the racket you have now.

You can also undervolt and lock your processor at lower speed when you are doing basic tasks.

@dlpetey:
How old is your laptop? If it's around 6 or so months, it's a good idea to keep an eye on your GPU. The fan-always-on problem may be related to GPU issues (it was related in my case). Good luck! -
make suer its your fan...
Both me and the user "crapp" all of a sudden got waht we though was the fan always on, but it was our harddrives, and there is no resolution as of yet.
take the back panel off and check if it is the fan or not -
My fan too is no most of the time. not loud just a whisling sound that cant be heard in if u are listening to music or watching a movie at . i used to be paranoid about it. but right now i have gotten used to it. what is your avarage cpu / gpu temp .... my cpu temp is aroung 45C - 55C while browsing and listening to music.

Hi..
I've installed the new NVIDIA'a drivers for the 8400 (XP OS) and since then my fan doesn't stop noising and won't turn off.
The "i8kfangui fan control" is showing 6000 RPM and I didn't have a choice but to force XP to (with the fan control) lower the fan speed to about 3800 RPM.
I know the fan started speed himself since I installed the new drivers. What do you think I should do ? Uninstall the drivers ? Restoring my system ?
Anyway, Right now the temperatures are about:
CPU - 49C
GPU - 52C
I don't know why windows speeds up the fans to get lower degrees.
Thanks. -
While you should be careful not to confuse it with the HD, your fact pattern (after the recent update) and timing matches mine exactly. When you say it stays on all the time, does it periodically "hiccup"? Slow down and then immediately speed back up. That is what mine did and I've heard of others' doing that as well.
-
My HD has just been replaced by the support because the other one crashed 2 weeks ago.
But, as you say, it's a kind of "hiccup" - the fan slows down for a mil sec but then immediately speed back up. Do you think it's the HD ? Remember that it happened just after I installed the new 8400 Drivers on my XP system. -
Ok guys. I have seen a thread on Dell site:
As i've been thinking, the new update speeds up the fan to the maximum. I guess this is the solution of NVIDIA to the 8400 problem.
But, in the thread below some users mentioned that even after updating the BIOS to the A11 version. the fan speeds up from max to min and again.
So , what do you think ? should I return the old drivers of the 8400 or should I trust NVIDIA and Dell in this issue ?
I just want to say that this noise is very annoying and I don't know if I can't take it.
In the meantime, I set the "i8kfangui fan control" to lower the speed ( I really can't suffer this noise). Now the temperatures (after the limitation ) is:
CPU - 45. GPU - 48. Memory - 47. Chipset - 57. HD - 38.
Now I see one user says that updating to the A12 BIOS version sets the dan to normal. So I don't know if speeding up is on purpose or no..
Thanks in advance,
Yaniv. -
Ok - Just update your BIOS to the last version (A14) and the problem will be fixed.

Hey i had this problem and the solution is to go to Dell.com. In the search bar type in "Bios Update." enter your XPS 1330 service code located on the bottom of your laptop. Then select BIOS updates and update the BIOS to A14. This will update your computer ad the problem goes away when your laptop is rebooted.
-
My fan stayed on high too after installing windows updates. I just upgraded my bios to A14 and that solved the problem. Thanks

Does anyone know if the fan should run? mine doesnt run at all. and I dont see the sensors. Seems like I dont have any fans weird.!!
-
The fan should run when the laptop GPU gets hot, yes.
Download the FurMark graphics benchmark. Run that for 5 minutes, your fan (there's only one) will kick in. If it doesn't, you need to ring Dell and get them to fix your laptop. -
guys, the Update causing the fans to go on all the time is the nvidia driver provided by windows, you can probably fix this by downloading a different one from laptopvideo2go...
Best of luck!
