Yes, I'm running a retail version of 7 Professional. All the drivers you need will be on Dell's website, no need for last minute scavenging.

I think I found a new LCD panel candidate. WXGA++, matte, brightness rating of 250 nits and 800:1 contrast ratio. I just need to make sure it uses the same data pin connector.

Do anyone know what the default LCD's name on the XPS 14. The Hardware ID on my XPS 14 states this:

    MONITOR\INL0014.

Is this the bad AUO LCD screen?

TRF-Inferno, Could you please let me know what brand & model your looking at with the new LCD panel candidate?

Interesting, definitely not AUO. I'll have to check later on who INL is. So far it looks like we have AUO, LG, Samsung and this new company providing LCD panels for the new XPS series. Thank you for your input.

I checked the specs on the AUO screen and was really disappointed with their viewing angle.

    16:9
    Model B140XW01
    Size 14"
    Resolution (pixel) HD (1366 x 768)
    Active Area (mm) 309.4 x 174
    Pixel Pitch (mm) 0.226
    Mode TN
    Number of Colors 262K
    Color Saturation (%) 45
    Viewing Angle (H/V) 90 / 50
    Brightness (cd/m2) 200
    Contrast Ratio 500 : 1
    Response Time (ms) 8
    Power Consumption (W) 3.8
    Interface 1 ch LVDS
    Supply Voltage (v) 3.3
    Light Source WLED
    Outline Dimension (mm) 324 x 192.5 x 5.2
    Weight (g) 350

My INL0014 screen sure has better viewing angels than this, but I don't like watching video on it. Thinking of upgrading to the LG screen, but I'm going to wait until you get the final spec on the new LCD panel.

This is what mine is too. Seems pretty decent, colors are good. Viewing angles are average for low end TN, nothing unusually bad.

I just did it 15 minutes after I got my laptop today.

I followed Bill's advice and it took me 15 minutes. No need to do anything other than snap the bezel off.

I did not even hardly look at the new screen other than to make sure the thing boots. I am very happy and yes, they should offer the better screen at a $150 -$200 upgrade price and people will go for it.

Viewing angle is what I would expect. It is the same from what I can tell as the laptop I was pleased with for several years.

Video is crisp and clear. 0 complaints.

Wow I've just read through this entire thread and am impressed by the screen replacement and general satisfaction people are having with their XPS 14 units.

I'm surprised there isn't more screen replacement on other laptops with subpar screens (AUO).

Since the LG screen is 1600x900 only, does that mean that games can't be run @ lower resolutions either?

Just got my L401x as my M1330 replacement in the mail today.

Its really big, thick, and heavy compared to the M1330. I'm seriously debating about packaging it up and selling it to offset the cost of a new Macbook Air 13". Even though the the material that went into the computer is nice. The aluminum and metal trim around the keyboard. Its just too thick looking. Did anyone else notice a problem with the two finger scrolling on the trackpad? For me it doesn't work as reliably and as smoothly as the Macbook versions. It's also lost the function of middle click when both L+R buttons are clicked?

I'm really surprised dell went with such a big footprint for their XPS line. I understand that they went thin and light with their adamo line and focused more on power with XPS. Unfortunately, the current XPS's are really bloated looking. It kinda detracts away from the old 12" and 13" they previously made.

I have to agree, after reading all the news about the screen replacements. It has to be done. The stock screen is terrible. I can notice the viewing angle problems even with just moving my head up and down as type this now.

That's becuase Dell XPS isnt meant to be portable, theyre multimedia notebooks for power and gaming. I dont think its too bad..still fits in my case. I think it only looks big because its widescreen...and your fingers have to be a little spaced out for the 2 finger scrolling to work, although I still prefer the 1 finger side scrolling..anyone know how to change it? As for the screen, my 3 year old gateway with 1280x800 looks much better than this...guess ill have to order that 900p screen

I bought two xps 14's....1 for me, 1 for my dad.....

My laptop has had issues right out of the box...At first it wouldn't even start up to windows, just an error, I checked the bios and the hard drive didnt even show up...I pulled it out and re-inserted it and it was found. Finally after about 10 tries I get windows to repair. Now it runs, but this morning it took about 5 minutes to start up and there's a noise from inside the case every once in a while. After this morning it's been running fast and smooth, however the wireless card is screwed up. Whenever I stream video the last two days it randomly shuts off and tells me the radio switch needs to be turned back on, but it's already on!...The only way around this is to disable the card in device manager and re-enable....any ideas? DO you think I have a major hardware issue?

Today , Dell has given me the same offer ....
Dell is replacing my XPS1330 (close to 3 year old) with XPS LX401x....
I liked the XPS 1330 verymuch.

I have noticed...all the reviews about LX401x are talking bad about the display.

I have few questions...regarding the replacement

    1. Did anyone tried asking dell for any other model other than L401X?
    2. Are you buying the LG display (900P) from Dell only?

    3. my XPS1330 is of Core2duo(T7500), so will Dell replace that with i5 ?

    4. Dell will not give the default (1 year )warranty for the replaced
Laptops...so Do we need to buy the warranty? which one is better 1 yr
    or 2 yrs?

    5. Will dell give me any options while building the system (configuration).?

    please guide me ..

    thanks

    Hi Everyone,
I am still using the original screen that came with the laptop. I was wondering for anyone else who is using this screen. Do you notice that depending on what is on the screen the brightness of the screen changes? It almost looks like a slight flickering. Like if I have firefox open and I minimize, it almost seems as my screen gets lighter. I can see it change. Is this due to the cheap panel? Is it due to refresh rate? Or is this due to some kind of setting in the intel graphics settings?

I use my screen at lowest brightness on battery which is when I have noticed this.

Hope someone can tell me what they think is happening.
    Thanks so much!

    1. They were going to give me the M1340, I asked for the L401X instead. I didn't see anything that would be better than it.
    2. I think its from a third party online dealer.
    3. I have the same processor. They gave me the i5.
    4. Not sure on that one.
    5. You'll have to talk to the rep/tech that did your exchange. I walked the person through making sure they replaced my 9-cell on my M1330 with one on the XPS, etc etc. So its up to your ability to sweet talk the rep/tech.

It took about 1-1.5weeks to get it to my door. Not too bad, they kept calling the wrong number to discuss the computer, so I never got a chance other than talking to XPS warranty people.

I'm not sure about the warranty details. I havn't had time to talk with them. After receiving my XPS14, I'm on the fence about if I want to keep it, sell it, or ask them for a full refund (if possible). I'm one of the few that feels like the XPS14 doesn't fit my current needs like the M1330 did. I'll keep you posted after I see what my options are.

Here is what my order says for the display:

    320-1636 14.0 HD (720p) LED Display L401X

Is this the crappy one that everyone is complaining about and replacing?

PS, I'm expecting delivery tomorrow, wish me luck!

That's weird. I would boot into safe mode, uninstall all the video card drivers, boot back into Windows normally and re-install the drivers. See if that fixes it. If not, take the screen back off and make sure that data cable is connected securely.

I could use some help from anyone who ordered a xps with a bluray recoder:
Brazil's DELL is making a huge mess up with the Bluray drive. The site shows as a blu ray recorder at the configuration page, but once you purchase it, The drive is shown as a bd reader/dvd recorder.

So this is the code im getting in the invoice from dell:

    -- Unidade Óptica:
-- Tray Load Blu-ray Disc BD-RE (Reads BD and Writes to BD/DVD/CD)

    -- [318-0123]

    -- [318-0237]

    -- [420-8161]

Anyone who ordered the xps 14 with a blu ray recorder got the same product codes? Me and all who ordered are very worried, we are waiting for over a month for this notebook to arrive, and if the configuration dosen't match the specs of the purchase we should have a few more months of headaches to get it right (friendly or legally).
DELL's order support isn't of any help, they just give us incoherent information about it.

Thank you for the idea... tried that and didn't work. Doesn't matter because I am switching out the hard drive for a SSD. So I will do a fresh install and see what happens.

Don't see how it could be a cable issue because the screen works great in safe mode... its an nvidia issue. In the device manager the monitor came up as "Generic non-PnP Monitor"...

Anyway, I expect it will be sorted after this fresh install.

I also put in a Intel Ultimate-N 6300 but the unit comes with 2 antennas... does anyone know where I can source either an antenna by itself (would this work just fine?) or a 3 antenna kit. The current antennas go to a small card at the top of the display to the left of the webcam.

I'll let you guys know sometimes next week. This panel's a bit more expensive than the other ones (~$160-$200).

You're right, it probably isn't a connection issue, but it never hurts to double-check to eliminate it as a possibility. I've seen my share of strange problems with computers when it comes to loose ribbon cables.

Hello, new guy here. Dell is replacing my m1330 for a xps 14 L401x that is pretty fully loaded. They have replaced my 1330 twice already and came out and worked on it 8 different times in less than 2 years. So I finally got fed up and let them hear about it and I guess it payed off. My computer should be here any day now and the screen issue I have been reading about is kind of bothering me and also the non ability to sync any apple products as well. My business phone is an Iphone and I also have a Ipad at home. Has anyone figured this problem out yet or does it not affect everyone? Just didn't want any surprises once it shows up and none of my stuff will sync and the display looks awful. Thanks in advance.

Trying to find this panel with the 40 pin connector and the connector being on the back, right-side of the panel is proving to be a daunting task.

Need to check with the seller if it has a 30 or 40 pin data connector and where is that connector located in respect to the back of the panel.

Yes, better contrast than both versions of the LP140WD1-TLA1, and supposedly higher brightness level than the matte version.

Do you think the screen is enough of an issue that dell will do something about it? If this many people have complained, how have they not switched screens or did some kind of compensation for this by now? Why send out your top of the line lap top with a sub par screen? Not very good business.

If you are not having any problems with syncing your iPhone and my phone syncs fine on my other computers. Does this mean there is something wrong with my Dell XPS 14? Or should I wait it out for an update from Apple/BIOS update from Dell?

    Thanks.

Has anyone installed the screen with the matte finish? I am curious if the brightness is an issue before I order one.

Also what are the new screens doing to the battery time. I image they will drain the battery faster with a brighter screen.

    Thanks!
