By throttling I mean slowing the GPU clock speed because it got too hot. You can see the clock speed drop with nVidia Inspector: I was seeing it drop to 405 MHz if I recall where the other XPS 15 never went below 800-something. If the cooling system is not properly built the thermal connections won't allow proper heat dissipation, causing the GPU to throttle its clock to protect itself from damage. This is a defect that is covered under warranty but you could get a tech support person who gives you a run-around. In my case having 2 of them with obviously different behavior probably helped.

    Good luck!

The 750m is a not powerful GPU at all. The fact that you have to downscale to 1600x900 AND set graphics to low to just achieve "playable" fps should tell you that.

The xps15 is not a laptop you should buy if you intend to play any games more intensive than, say, league of legends, IMO.

If I may ask, where can I find one of those (online) glass stands you have your laptop on? :) (I'm referring to the one in the picture on page 4 btw)

Great in depth review - the most in depth I've seen!
I'm purchasing a new laptop. I'm a free lance developer so I'll be going from one office to another. I'll also be using additional monitors, which will vary in resolution (and dpi) at each office. I'm considering getting an XPS 15 however I'm wondering whether I'd be better off getting a laptop with a lower resolution as I've heard bad things about scaling. Could you tell me how you've got on?

Microsoft say it works well (obviously!) for increasing % per output device
    http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2013/07/15/windows-8-1-dpi-scaling-enhancements/

but others say its just not very good http://www.tested.com/tech/pcs/460553-problem-high-ppi-windows-display-scaling/

I love the look of the XPS-15 and it looks really portable (and cool!) which is important to me commuting to various offices but this is the only thing holding me back from getting one.

Well as I mostly work with a secondary screen as my main screen. On that one I use FullHD (which is the native screen resolution), on my laptop is use the maximum resolution which is fine for me. Windows scaling is working perfectly fine for me :)

Puh I am sorry but I don't know that :/

    As a quick update:
I am still running this laptop without any troubles. Due to privacy concerns I removed Windows 8.1 and switched to Arch Linux.

    Hello, you have mentioned:

    Display:

Once you load a calibrated color profile and disable vivid mode it simply becomes awesome. The touchscreen works excellent. As I am not using the built-in screen as my main screen I will not miss the 120Hz which the P170HM had. Playing at 144Hz with a Displayport to Mini-Displayport cable works flawless. I haven't had a chance to test the display outside. It is quite glossy but also can be set to be very bright so I imagine usage outside to be acceptable. But that's what you get with glossy displays and there for I can't complain about it.

How do you disable vivid mode bro? I have installed windows 10 but there is no option to do that . please guide me.

    Hello to all,

I've got mid tier configuration (32GB SSD + 1TO HDD). I want to replace 32GB SSD by 256GB SSD SAMSUNG EVO 850 MSATA and keep HDD for extra storage.

Are there Samsung EVO 850 MSATA specific references compatible for XPS 9530? Or as I'm writing from France, any reference sold in our market (ex Amazon) should be compatible for XPS9530?

Many thanks in advance for answers.

    Best Regards

    Jean-Pierre

May I know how you connect your laptop to the display? Thanks!
