I bought an open box 9550 the other day and had a question about the SSD. When I went to install Linux on it I noticed that the drive was not showing up as a NVMe SSD but rather SATA. Looking into the drive more, I can see it is a Micron 1100 %12 GB SSD which has far as I know is Sata and not NVMe. Did Dell ever use these drives on this model, wondering if the model I bought had a drive issue which was fixed by swapping this in. Just curious if it's worth raising a fuss about.

I think someone swiped the NVMe and stuck a SATA in before returning it as they shipped with NVMe drives apart from the lower models with NVMe cache drive and 1tb SATA 2.5"

I have the same issue with the battery/touchpad. The MS store offered me to exchange for any laptop I want but the only one with similar specs is the 9560, which is currently out-of-stock. As soon they get it in stock, I will swap it. I am hoping that the new one will not have this issue.

Hello all, well soon after the above activity, I gave up and called Dell support, they came onsite and fitted a new motherboard (nothing else worked.) The engineer was surprised that the F8 recovery key bricked machines running W10... but anyway, never again...

I have now added 3 more years DELL onsite premium support... cheaper than replacing a bricked laptop that cost £2,000 :)

    Sudden performance decrease

Hey guys.. I am having some serious issues with my XPS15. it is XPS 15 9550 - 6700HQ - 960M 2GB - UHD - 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM. I have bought it like 13 months ago.. I have been using it 99% time on my desk, university related work - Photoshop - Premiere - illustrator etc. From time to time I like to play some OLD games - IL2 Sturmovik 1946, GT Legends, Stronghold Crusader, Arcanum... Basically, not very demanding games. The newest game I have tried was Dirt Rally. I has worked flawlessly when laptop was new.

Few weeks ago.. my laptop became rather slow.
Although all drivers and BIOS were the latest, no viruses, laptop has passed all tests I could do. Dirt rally is unplayable with the low settings, GT Legends unplayable, IL2 sturmovik very very slow, Arcanum very slow. Browsing facebook is disaster using Chrome or Firefox. Loading times are also much longer than used to be (everywhere).

I did the fresh windows install via USB stick, installed all drivers and updates...but there was no difference!
I have also tried benchmark 3DMark11 and this is my result:

    test.jpg

    This is a screenshot downloaded from notebookcheck.net ( https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS-15-9550-Core-i7-FHD-Notebook-Review.158875.0.html)

My score is really bad I think and this could be the issue I think...

Should I send it back? Should I contact Dell support?

I mean.. I am a student and my 2300 € laptop seems to be broken.

    Any help is appreciated!

It may be that your clock has got "locked" to 0.8GHz Open the Task Manager and click on the Performance page - does the "Speed" ever get up to 3.xGHz?

This happened to myself and a few others and is caused by a "safety" lockout in the bios when bad power supply is detected (I think) - the solution is to either unplug the battery to reset it (or drain the battery sufficiently to achieve the same affect). You may need to also press the power button for 40 seconds once drained and unplugged.

So let the battery drain until windows shuts down, then boot into the bios and let it drain to 0% and see if that helps.

Hy! Curious if some of you have experience with this 9550 problems. It's been existing since early 2016, but it took me nearly a year before being able to replicate it (knowing what causes it).
Since then, I've send the device to Dells paid repair analysis but the problem never got addressed.

When lifting up the laptop and touching (carrying, ..) it at ~ on the bottom of the device near the left lower keyboard - the screen has a sudden black-coloured glitch and then with the last visible image frozen.
    Anyone familiar with this problem?

    Thanks!

There is a screen cable that orignates from that area. It might be loose.

Not a popular problem on the 9550 but a handful of us had the problem.

-- You might try the following at your own risk. Remove the case bottom. When the computer is upsidedown on your workbench, you will see a rectangular dull silver cover about 1cm x 1cm in size with a black screw. That screw requires a JIS bit (not a normal Phillips bit or you will strip the screw and it is incredibly difficlut to remove - don't ask how I know). Carefully remove the cover and the connector. Make sure the cabling into the connector is not binding along the entire length. Then very CAREFULLY reseat the connector. Do NOT touch any of the electrical contacts. Replace the silver cover and tighten the JIS screw. If the mating surface is not plastic you can probably use LockTite (if there is plastic the LockTite will melt that)

-- Also could be a short. Start by checking on the case bottom that the copper sticker with black electrical coating is properly placed. I don't think you should see any copper (do a search for photos here to see what it should look like).

Same comments. Does not happen on my system.

If indeed it is a short, that can destroy your computer or worse.

This has happened to a few guys on the board so you can also do a search here at NBR for some more ideas.

Has anyone had issues with the Killer Wireless in these laptops? Download speeds will go all the way down under 1Mbps and the only fix is to update the chipset driver. That sticks for a couple days and then you have to reinstall the driver again. Dell has been 0 help on the issue

See if changing roaming aggressiveness to lowest in device manager > Network Adapter > Right click on Killer 1535 and select properties. Select Advanced Tab and then apply the tweak I said above.
Make sure you're using latest driver from Killer. Use revo to uninstall existing Killer Suite completely.

There must be hundreds of posts here on the Killer Wireless issues; use the search bar. Results for the past few months might give you best results (drivers have changed and people have probably explored lots of potential solutions.)

I know some people installed different cards. Access is not so difficult although the wires are very small...

    Hello Mike Housman,

I apologize for the issues that you are experiencing with your Killer adapter.

In addition to Vasudev's suggestion of updating the Killer Control Center (you can find the latest version on our website here - https://www.killernetworking.com/driver-downloads/item/killer-control-center-x64 - I would also suggest updating the BIOS on your machine from the manufacturer's support page. If that doesn't solve the issue for you, please contact us directly at [email protected] so that we can help you out!

You can see the W10 ISO in the footer of any post from @GoNz0 . He has a thread running through clean installs of W10 so that gets you most of the way. I think there are a few windows 7 threads for the 9550 also that can resolve any issues you might have.

The 9560 has the most graphics and processor horsepower. The 9370 is a lower powered unit.

If you are going to push the 9560 hard, you might want to look at the thermals threads as this is a furnace. There are a few fixes to resolve a lot of the throttling. A repaste of the CPU & GPU, undervolt are very helpful. But this will throttle when the vrm ambient sensor hits just 76*C so if that is a problem, then @iunlock has a thread to fix that (it takes a bit of effort but seems to work for several "extreme" users here).

    hahaha.

Hello, i have xps 15 9550, 512GB SSD, 16GB RAM. Recent windows update (KB4093112) disabled wifi (no wifi icon would appear when selecting lower right corner), solution for me was to uninstall dell wifi peripheral and restart would re install it).
    Hope it helps ;-)
