Upgraded me to next day shipping cause of the "trouble" i had having to re-order. Didn't even ask for it

 

Ordered on 4/8/11. If I configured my profile correctly, the specs are in my signature. Seems like forever already.

Since December, I've (1) ordered an XPS L501x and returned it on delivery, (2) ordered, hated and returned an Inspiron 15R, (3) ordered and then cancelled a Lenovo Ideapad y560p, because its screen res (1366x768) was not going to work for me, (4) ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad W520 and then cancelled it because the 1.0 watt speakers wouldn't work for me either, and then (5) ordered my Dell XPS L502x, which is currently in production.

I have an EDD of 5/5. I've heard something about watched clocks and pots not boiling, but I've set up a lawn chair by the front door to watch for the UPS truck.

Ok, being that I'm a newbie (to this site), I didn't realize that I can't create a signature until I make five "quality" posts. Hi Scott which status page are you using to track (url?) Mine never said "delivery preparation" it just says finalizing production right now and the next stage is shipped. Ordered 3/29.

 

Mine went from "in production" directly to "shipped" just tonight.
I'm using the standard order status page on Dell's website.

 

As soon as I login to dell, it's the 1st status page that shows "Delivery Preparation" (all previous orders as well). Yours is in the same status as mine was hours ago, mine took about 2 full business days to go from "finalizing" to shipped. Weekends evidently don't count.

Hmph. Mine was in production for a week before I canceled it. This nonsense about some people waiting 5 days and others waiting a month was a *big* reason why I gave up on ordering any XPS model - it is SUCH a drag. I'm an anxious person by nature, and it was driving me completely and totally insane to have to deal with such an enormous degree of unreliability. The fact that it takes so long to begin with is just extremely poor business practice. I was very unimpressed. And the customer service folks were absolutely no help in providing me with additional information. Even if their English was good enough to be borderline intelligible (and if they understood my American accent, which I'm not sure they ever did) I literally was provided with no worthwhile information *whatsoever*. What a nightmare.

You call waiting one week a nightmare? Then I'm glad you didn't have my experience, or it probably would have killed you.
Some people get lucky and only have to wait a few days. It more typically takes 2 weeks. 3 weeks or more is unfortunate but rare. I say you shouldn't have cancelled after only 1 week. I do empathize with you wanting more detailed information from customer service, though. The stuff they tell you can really make no sense. You'd think they'd be able to receive updates from the assembly team or at least be able to contact them for accurate status whenever you call.

 

I waited 3 weeks before it finally shipped yesterday. Looks like they overnighted it and should be here today. Funny because today was my original EDD but they changed it to May a few days ago, then back to today yesterday.

 

It would have killed me. The thing is, I just have serious anxiety issues. As in, to the extent that I get panic attacks on occasion, and occasionally need to be medicate, sometimes heavily so. I have the capacity to drive myself (and those around me) completely crazy, at times. Waiting weeks for a huge purchase like this, one that requires a great deal of decision-making and customizations that may or may not be correct is, for me, just a nightmare. During that week I was checking the status no less than a dozen times a night and constantly reconfiguring options and second-guessing my choices and whether I'd made the correct purchase and spent my money wisely. There was no way *in hell* I wasn't going to cancel that order after spending a total of like 20-25 hours educating myself about modern laptop options and seeking out the absolute best and perfect deal. And it's because I'm a totally neurotic basket case. And insane - clinically, even. Of course, I should have done all that self-educating before-hand, but I didn't... Because I didn't want to wait even longer, in the end.

 

So what did you or are you going to buy GOOD SIR?

Well, the perfect deal for me is not the perfect deal for everyone. The main reason I canceled my XPS 15 was because I came to terms with the fact that the 525m 1GB graphics card I ordered wouldn't allow me to do the gaming I wanted to do.

So I look around and around, and eventually find a really nice deal for an Asus G53SW that had almost the exact same specs I had on my XPS 15 - same sandy bridge processor (i7-2630QM) same amount of RAM (6GB) same type of screen (glossy LED backlit FHD 1920x1080p) same hard drive (500GB 7200RPM that i'll probably replace with an SSD eventually anyway). The big difference that the G53SW had a GTX 460m 1.5GB graphics card, a huge upgrade over anything the XPS 15 series had to offer. And it only cost $1200 instead of $1000. And I'm getting it on Friday instead of... 2 or 3 or 4 or however many weeks from now. Might not have the awesome audio of the XPS and the screen might not be *quite* as fancy... But I can seriously live with that. There are other advantages to the Asus.

edit: Oh c'mon Rossi77 I just looked at your post history, and you ordered yours 4 days ago and claimed it had already finished production! That's like the fastest build time in HISTORY for Dell! They probably didn't let you cancel it because it's already shipped! Suck it up and wait for the delivery, you're basically the luckiest Dell customer ever. There are people here who have waited for OVER A MONTH. Not just 4 or 5 days.

-Phone (Representative) - Laptop is finished and is awaiting shipment to me. The rep stated that the laptop is completely finished production and is just waiting to be shipped.

I will update you on the status of my order. It has been in this state since 4/11/11. I hope that the laptop just shows up on Friday, or even better, Tomorrow!

 

From what I can conclude, they hold your shipment at their transit that is waiting to be picked up by fedex because you probably have the 5-7 day shipping. If you log onto fedex.com and use your ordernumber as a reference number you should be alble to see ur computer. It will hang at shipment information sent to fedex. My hung from that from 3/31/11 to 4/5/11. So i got my computer 5 days after they released it to fedex. MY shipping was 5-7 business days.
Now my replacement. The shipping is Next business day. It only hung at shipment info sent to fedex for 5 hours until it was picked up.
So your shipping method from my conclusion influences how long it hangs at the process "shipment info sent to fedex"
Sorry for the typos or misconfusing as i am tired.

I would liek others that received there order to confirm this. Please look on your fedex tracking page and notice the time difference between "the shipment info sent ot fedex" until picked up.

scott5626 and I were actually communicating a lot during our orders because we both had similar configs, both were experiencing unusual waits, and both live in the same city. As a result, our two systems were almost twins in production. I'm sure they were in the same facilities throughout the whole process. They shipped at the exact same time and had the same exact dates and times in the tracking info. Which does make sense, us being in the same city. But I mention this because he got his shipping upgraded to overnight whereas my order maintained the 7-day delivery. We also had the same original order date. So, two systems ordered by two different people in the same city on the same original date, and they both were delivered on the same date. Only, one of us had overnight, the other had 7-day. That kinda tells me that overnight is useless as long as the shipping facility is close enough.

It depends on which country you Live in. Here in India It takes 2 days for custom clearance than maybe 2-3 days more for shipping.

Usually when the order status says "Manufacturing Build Complete" means it is already invoices (meaning you would see 14-Apr as the date of invoice). And thus you should receive the laptop within 1 week maxx.

 

Does Dell have that music that plays when you're on hold available for sale? Maybe they could install it on my computer.

Right now, on my main account page, it shows as "Delivery Preparation."
On the order details page, it is still "In Production."

I called, got transferred five times (lastly to India), and the best the rep. could tell me is that it is in the final stages of production and would go through testing next (which he called a wonderful process...).

I tried to expedite the order, but he said they couldn't. I tried to expedite the shipping method, and he said they couldn't. I'm pretty sure I'll get it sooner than 5/5, but the waiting is bothersome.

Welp, that's definitely a new low for Dell. Hope you enjoy your new laptop in 59 years - I mean, it's not like it'll be THAT far out of date by then. In fact, ts value will probably have increased tenfold at least in that time! I bet an antique Dell XPS 15 will be worth, oh, around $1.5 million or so after adjusting for inflation and what not. Granted that's if the apocalypse doesn't occur and US currency still exists. Regardless, I believe it is still a sound investment!

Dang! I am waiting and hoping that my laptop ships soon. I have confirmed with Fedex that my laptop is in Georgia and if it is released today, it will be delivered to me tomorrow. I called dell to confirm, and they confirmed that it could ship today, but it will not be delivered until 5/3, even though fedex says 4/15.

Dont trust Dell's delivery dates, the fedex one is accurate. If i listened to the dell order status's my computer i've had for 2 weeks would be still coming in a few days
