By fast charge you mean that "battery mode"? Or something that always happens with this system? I mean I have the optimal mode, not any fast charging one.

Nearly everything with a modern li/ LiPo battery does it's bulk charge or fast mode up to the 80%ish mark where it trails off to trickle the last 20% to help it stay in good condition, I expect Dell's fast charge in the BIOS will go above the 80% in bulk mode.

Basically the fan will come on during charge up to the 80% mark no matter what you do.

Pardon an extremely possibly dumb question, but with the 4K xps 15" would battery life on the go get better running that screen in 1080P mode, or will the screen still draw the same amount of power regardless.

It will have less work to do but the only way to know that is a test in both modes.

I believe that It would be the same because the same amount of effective pixels will be needed to be turned on and off by the system. I've read a review that they confirmed this theory (it was on youtube i think). However, it is always worth to make a trial. Let us know!

I just received my 9550 Skylake 4k 16gb 512 ssd 4 days ago. I have not noticed any problems at all except popping audio but fixed that by using DFX Audio Enhancer. Is it correct in assuming most of the kinks have been worked out?

Hey! I went with the FHD i5 8GB variant last week and still noticed a few things that have been mentioned before.
    • Audio crackles when I try to adjust screen brightness
    • Screen flickers below 20% brightness (seems to be hardware related)
    • Display response time is the worst I have ever seen
    • Some keys feel like I'm typing on a 150$ Acer Notebook from 2005
Is there anyone with a FHD Display that doesn't have a super bad response time?

Second question: I've immediately thrown out the HDD and 32GB Cache, replacing it with an SSD. After a clean install I can't install the Dell Color correction and Audio (wavemaster?) Software. Setup cancels with a "Only available on genuine Dell Laptops" message. Is there any way to use them after a clean install?

    Cheers!

Is it normal for the screen's colors to 'blink' when the screen is powered on ? By 'blink', I mean that the screen remains on, but the color warmth keeps changing for about 5-6 seconds. Is this normal ?

Actually I just figured out the cause. It was Dell PremierColor software that was responsible for that 'color blinking'. I just quit the program and tried closing the lid of my laptop and opening it again, and it didn't do that 'color blinking' thing again :)

haha, sorry. I know through software it's possible. I was wondering if there's a built-in function to do that instead, like pressing a function key or something. My last few laptops had such a key (it didn't require any software install) which you can use to switch the screen on/off.

    Thanks.

    Another question.

Are there are standard benchmarks available for the 9550 which show how its CPU, GPU, RAM and SSD perform ? The reason I ask is I'd like to compare my own 9550 to them to make sure I reach those same benchmarks. This would be a quick test to see how reliable my 9550's internal hardware is.

    Hi guys,

Been using this laptop for a few days now, coming from a 2011 MacBook Pro.

Overall it's a good computer, though there are some downsides like screen's response time, keyboard and speakers which are not as good as on a MacBook. Win10 is quite friendly for a Mac OS user, but it doesn't come close to the ergonomy of Mac OS for me.

There is one thing in particular which surprise me : is there NO OPTICAL OUT on this pc ?

I usually watch movies on a projector and use SPDIF optical jack to output sound on a 5.1 system. How can i do that now ?

I can't think of any pcs with an SPDIF out, it's quite a specialized connection.

Would one of these work? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/s/ref=is_s?k=spdif+usb

Well, you can either buy an adapter for the xps 15, or take a band-saw to a MacBook's bezel and hook up an external GPU.

Not really as we don't go trying to stress our expensive laptops as they are not games rigs that can take the punishment.

Best bets to use something like Aida64 and check how bad it throttles under load, the worst you can do is run a CPU and GPU benchmark together as it will cause it to throttle right back.

Best bets to repaste the heatsinks anyway.

Connect HDMI to a AV receiver that outputs to the projector, not ideal but you knew it didn't have the port. Opticals a bit dated anyway as it can't output some of the modern surround signals such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio.
I don't consider leaving out what will soon be a legacy device in a cutting edge laptop a downside with the displayport and HDMI offerings.

My XPS ships on the 27th and was wondering if there is a good place to start on what should be done when I get it. I am getting the i7, 4k, 512ssd, 16gb version.

    1. I plan to wipe and put clean Windows 10 Pro on it
    2. Plan to do a bios update
    3. Drivers from individual manufacturers...anyone know what drive ships with the 512 ssd?
    4. Dell Premier Color software or no?
    5. Should I switch in BIOS off of RAID for the drive to AHCI? I have read that a few places on here.

Also, I have a Vizio P Series (2016) 4K TV I plan to hook it up to on occation. Can I use the HDMI port or is that 1080P only on this PC? Not a huge deal just wondering and would ideally like a 4K resolution on the TV if I can get it.

I'm really wondering if some people just don't notice the super slow response times on the FHD model, or if there are really some that have no ghosting issues.

To those without issues it doesn't matter. I don't have any issues playing the division on my 9550. Sadly I don't know of any way that really shows how good or bad the response time is on one unit vs another.

Anyone having issues with the laptop not coming back from sleep? Instead it takes some time to start booting and Windows 10 is freshly started. It worked perfectly but now it starts doing this more often. No issues in the eventlog... just that it restarted due to a crash of some kind.

For those of which the touch screen model, do you use any screen protector ? If yes, any recommendations?

I use the touch screen for some creative work but I don't want to damage the screen, which is why I'm thinking of trying a screen protector ?

You really shouldn't need to with gorilla glass. If you must you would probably need a wet application to get rid of air bubbles.

Well there's also a second reason. I'm not a complete fan of the glossy screen (all my previous laptops were matte) and so another advantage of getting a screen protector is that it will remove the gloss (or at least most of it).

I've found two screen protectors for the touch Dell XPS 9550 so far:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017GGF1PE

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/AntiGlare-L...ell-New-XPS-15-9550-TouchScreen-/121851313314

Has anyone here tried any of the above ?

This almost blew my mind a couple of weeks back. I know it's all gone in the latest BIOS update. Before that, it would sleep and resume normally and then occasionally it would also sleep and start afresh :(

There's now some talk that the headphone jack issue may be a hardware problem, and that there is a new motherboard revision out that solves this and other problems. Has anyone heard anything about this?

Also, it's not about the XPS 15 specifically, but does the TB15 dock still suffer from problems?

FHD screen here. I can see ghosting, but it doesn't bother me unless I'm specifically looking for it. It's certainly a slower screen, but unfortunately whether it's a problem for you or not is different from person to person.

    Hi All,

Been very tempted by this laptop for a while and about to jump into the i7/4K Touch/512GB SSD Signature Edition from the Microsoft Store.

The question I have is that I saw gonzo produced an excellent walkthrough of clean install @ http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ean-install-guide-custom-iso-download.789769/

Would this need to be done on a signature edition version since a lot of the Dell crap is already off it? Any advantage to do a clean install on a Signature edition?

    Thanks for any advice...

I would say probably not but mine is a later ISO release so less patching needed. I intend to release a new ISO each time MS release one.

Give it a go and if you run into a lot of problems consider my ISO.

Be brave, you can demand a new unit if yours has an issue and send it back for a refund if the problems reported in the 1st month. Just take out a decent extended warranty!

The main concern I have when buying from Microsoft store is, in the event of a hardware issue, I get stuck in a "Its Dells issue, no its Microsofts issue" situation and no-one will resolve.

I always believed it was the retailer who was responsible, but chatting to a sales consultant earlier they said it would be Dell who would have to cover anything under warranty. Usually I would want to return to Microsoft and have them sort it will the manufacturer.

    Hey guys,

    just an info:
If you are displeased with the glossy 4k screen, why not put an anti-glare screen protector on it? It was bothering me for quite a while already. I succeeded in putting it on today and it is much easier to work with the laptop in difficult lightning situations.

    Bubble-free, yes.

But not 100% dust free. There are some very tiny spots of dust on the left hand side where I started applying the protector, but I can live with that.

I already removed a lot of the dust. You can do that by peeling the film off again and use an adhesive tape to catch the dust. That works really well, but it can take quite a while. Still a bit dust left, but I am pleased as it is now. :)

I received a Dell XPS 15 FHD 9550 3 days ago, and what can I say? It´s a disgrace, wasted three days of my valuable time.

    On the Pro side:

The design is beautiful, a big rival for the Macbook.

    Now to my concerns:

    Day 1:

I noticed multiple driver crashes because of the Intel graphic card. In addition I saw flickering in many applications. On the first day I tried to fix the problem by myself, did not work.

    Day 2:

Contacted support and we had to set up a new bios version and tested drivers, nothing worked. I was given an appointment for next week. Finally I could arrange an appointment for the next day.

    Day 3:

Had Windows fully reinstalled and put all the drivers manually on my device. The Intel driver again caused the problems. The staff was clueless, but informed me that it is a software problem and not the hardware, but could not help anymore. So I had to test multiple drivers alone at the expense of my valuable free time and searched the Internet for solutions, nothing worked. What can I say, has never been so disappointed by a product.

    Conclusion:

The Dell Support was trying to be helpful, but couldn´t solve my problem and I lost three days. It´s an 1800 € device! Given the unreasonable delivery time from Dell redemption is also not a satisfactory option. The delivery takes on average 2 to 3 weeks.

I am not the only one with this problem. I do not understand how Dell can sell such a premium product with so awful software configuration. This is an unacceptable condition. Unfortunately, many customers have exceeded the 14 days return policy and a must live with their problem, I not thankfully.

I'll probably give Apple a chance now or will try the Surface Book, although I loved the XPS design and specs actually.

How likely is it to get a bug free device, if I return my XPS and buy a new one? Do you know, how I could fix my problems. Or would you recommend buying another product. But which product got such a good processing quality and good Hardware? Acer, Apple, Microsoft?
