Cheers for the info. Do new pads make a big difference in temps or is it mainly the repasting that helps with temps?

repaste is enough and maybe adding a thicker pad under the RAM chip that doesn't seem to contact, you will notice that when you remove the heatsink, I have put a 2mm pad under that one and left the rest alone.

So did you replace the old RAM pad with a 2mm one or add the 2mm one to the old pad?

Just do what I done. Buy the 1080P one then talk to Dell technical support about ordering the 84whr battery. Should arrive within a couple of weeks then put the new battery in yourself and while your at it you could upgrade the hard drive or memory.

I purchased the FHD 256GB HD, i7 with 8GB Ram, 56whr battery but you could go for the the cheaper i5 version and then try and haggle dell sales to lower the price even further. Just means more money allocated to upgrades. My 84whr battery costs me 180NZD, could be cheaper in other regions though.

I happily get around 8-11 hours in Windows 10 and 8-10 hours in Manjaro/Arch Linux on minimum consumption (word processing, web browsing, coding).

Dell rep is still telling me the 84whr is not in stock and won't let me order it. Did you have thru several reps or did you wait for it to come in stock before ordering?

I just went through the one rep and it was with Dell Service Parts rather than the actual Sales Rep but they do need your service tag details in order to get to the parts people. The Parts guy found the part in the database and sent the form to the sales rep of the part number and the sales guy made me an invoice for the part even though it was stocked in Korea or whatever they sent it to New Zealand within four weeks.

I get about 5 hours of battery life:

    - i5. i5 is enough, imo... there are not many applications out there tailored to use a hyperthreaded quadcore.
    - 1080p (non-touch)
    - 56W battery, because I went with the 1TB HDD + 35GB SSD option. Dell needs the space to fit the HDD, so there is no 84W with HDD.
    - Windows 10
    - Use case: running multiple virtual machines & virtual environments for coding in Python linux + presenting in windows power point.

I love this laptop! Slim, light, and powerful... I do occasionally game on it, and the FPS on tomb raider 2013 ULTRA is ~40. CS:GO competitive I'm getting 110FPS.

Sorry for digging up old thread but I need some help with the battery. I've just got this laptop but the battery life is way below compare to everyone.
My configuration is 15", 1080p, 512GB SSD, and 84 wh battery. It should give me more than 6+ hrs right? But my usage at the moment is only around 5 hours at best with screen at 40% (default Balanced Power settings). I've already tried reinstalling a clean Win 10, used all the tips on the drivers (hardware and software problems thread). There is no Throttling as far as i can see (i also repasted the CPU and added some heatpad so the temp are always under 60 C).

For the single 2mm pad- are you referring to the 2 video ram chips that is left to the gpu chip?

Use throttlestop to check your c7% percentages. Your CPU usage should also be 1% or less while idle.
