    In 2017 November it was rumored to have the following specs;
    • 8th generation Quad and Hexa Core intel processors,
    • Optional GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q,
    • FHD, QuadHD+, and 5k screens,
    • 4 PCI-e lanes for ThunderBolt,
    • One more USB-C,
    • Top of the line XPS 15 is at $3800 CAD,
    • The refresh should occur in January (delayed until late spring, because Dell struggeling to put inside the 1060m).
    Source
    Source 2

However it is arrived with slightly lower specs, because the 1060maxQ was too big for this thin laptop. The Geforce GTX 1050Ti is the GPU, which is just a minor upgrade from the previous generation. Price is $1399 for the one with 1050ti GPU, without dedicated GPU just $999. See the rest of the configurations at Dell's website.

What we did not expected, came also a different XPS model! Namely the XPS 15 9575. It has a very different internal in even thinner body. Spots a 2nd Gen Kaby Lake CPU integrated with Radeon RX Vega. Tests says,
The slowest XPS 15 9575 is almost as fast as the fastest XPS 15 9560
So good chance a higher specs version of 9575 Is faster as in this article the new XPS 9570. Meahnwhile I would reccommend to skip this 9570 and wait for the 9580 with Geforce 1150 GPU.
Nvidia's next gen mobility GPUs confirmed to be landing in late 2018

    Guide, how to install Windows 7 on this machine;

Basically you will need to follow this guide here, but be aware there is no driver for the integrated igp yet, just for the dedicated GPU.

I sincerely hope a thermal and power redesign has been employed. Otherwise, this machine will be worse than Razer in the thermals and performance department.

To be clear, the original Reddit post has no image and the poster wrote what he said he remembered. He said he saw 1060 but assumed it was Max-Q.

That is weak evidence but fun speculation.

On another note, not sure how the small case and power module would deal with all the extra horsepower. The 9560 really struggles with the 7700HQ & 1050 . . .

I cant believe an article is based on a reddit post which is just someone who saw something and remembered some of it. Not doubting it necessarily, just odd sourcing.
Interesting refresh possibilities mentioned; looking like a bigger deal than 9550 to 9560. 6 cores would certainly be a noteworthy upgrade.
Intel 8th generation is a bit of a cluster so this doesn't tell me much about the exact chip possibilities. Anyone know more about specs, or the specific microarchitecture ?
I wonder if there's any chance we'll see a model offered without a dGPU but with the new Intel CPU w/ semi discrete AMD GPU recently announced, as mentioned here ( https://www.anandtech.com/show/1200...with-amd-radeon-graphics-with-hbm2-using-emib). Supposedly its an H series chip, and would be a cool option.
Also, the addition of a 2nd USB-C port would be welcome. Wonder if it will be Thunderbolt 3, or just one USB-C and one TB3 as is done on the 9365. Would also be great if they also upped the TB3 to 4 PCIe lanes

EDIT: Also, 5k screen! Isnt that excessive, I mean how close do you need to be to tell the difference with perfect vision? Personally love the 4k, but think its serious overkill on a 15 inch screen

Lol this post is funny. I thought there would be some actual proof or something. I actually heard they were going to put sli 1080 ti video cards in it, I saw it somewhere on a dell site...

1080ti very unlikely get place in this thin machine, but the above mentioned specs are possible and logical for an upgrade, especially if they improve something on the cooling part.

Lol I see that I didn't peak your sarcasm chart. With the cooling on the 9560 a 1060 max q is not possible. They are going to have to do a lot of work.

It's just funny that this thread basically states some random guy spouting some stuff and people are taking it to the bank.

I realize a 1060 in a thin laptop is possible, it's why I'm probably going to sell my 9560 and pick up an aero 15. It's just not near possible with the current cooling configuration, not to mention the lack of VRM cooling.

In fact this is trivial. Just a little tweak of Intel DPTF needed :) :) :) Max Q in turn seems to be the Nvidia way of stuffing too much specs into machines which lack adequate cooling.

I guess with a reasonable small upgrade of cooling we've seen to be feasible (likely implemented as one more heatpipe and some more fins), it would be perfectly feasible to stuff in the next gen i7 hq and the 1060 Max Q. It is also reasonable to expect to see DPTF rearing its ugly head a few minutes into action the usual XPS way ;)

I will do undervolting with Throttlestop, limit to three GHz and disable half of the CPU cores, because 3 cores will be enough power for all my games. This way I ll ensure the cooler operation and higher frequency for the GPU.

If they are remotely true I'd be amazed. If they are true and dell doesn't really really really up their game in terms of cooling it will be a turdbook (aka razer).

I have no reason to doubt the reddit poster and do not fault their posting. But I also have zero reason to accept it as fact, nevermind quote it. I was making fun of that ridiculous site for using that post as sourcing for the ultimate click bait article.
I wouldn't be surprised if was partially correct, as some of it sounds like a logical progression and is not very specific. There are rumors Intel will offer 8th gen HQ processors with 6 cores. More USB-C ports are inevitable.
And though I agree with custom90gt and you, I could see Dell offering a GTX 1060 and/or 5k screen. 6 cores + a 1060 would be severely thermally limited and a 5k 15 inch screen is pointless, but don't discount Dell marketing department seeing advertising potential in both regardless of their realized performance. I do not see Dell putting in the effort to make a thermally optimized design, especially if the case remains the same, but would be pleasantly surprised if they did.

"It will be faster all around and the display option will continue to be the absolute best available." = 5k? Maybe there is something else I missed.

I mean I won't be totally surprised, but then again I don't care about ultra high res in a 15" laptop.

I mean you can read it like that, but when I see the word "continue" it makes me think of keeping the current screen as they think it is the best. He did say it will have 4x thunderbolt though, so one step in the right direction.

Logical takeaways from Frank Azor's comments:

    1. 8th generation HQ CPU whenever Intel releases it
    2. 4 PCI-e lanes for ThunderBolt (eGPU gamers!!!)
    3. The same or better screen as "the display option will continue to be the absolute best available"

Given actual features on new 8th generation XPS13, I imagine the 9570 upgrades will be ho-hum:

    - Just simple generation changes to the CPU & GPU
    - And the slightly reworked motherboard to accomodate CPU/GPU/4lanes
    - Same screen

OLED would be cool, possibly extending battery life in dark screen displays. I have to imagine the burn in issues would be especially pronounced in computers considering the fixed taskbars and title bars, and the extended amount of time many screens spend turn on vs a cell phone. The alienware 13" does offer an OLED screen per a quick google search, but I am unaware of many other laptops or monitors that offer OLED. Does anyone know any models that have been out awhile or the long term feasibility of OLED in this use?
And while Frank Azor's confirmation of 4x PCIe on the 9570 is promising, I'll believe it when someone can test it out. I remember that he previously stated that the 9560 would offer the same only to retract it after talking to his engineering department.
There have also been some intermittent and unclear rumors that Intel is doing a minor upgrade to TB3 tech alongside Cannonlake processors, using a new Titan Ridge controller instead of Alpine Ridge, supporting 2x DP 1.4 vs the current 1.2. Two DP 1.4 would be over the limits of TB3 so I'm not sure exactly how this would work, and there's very limited info. No idea about the chance this would be included in the redesign or even released by the time the 9570 comes out, but something interesting to look out for IMO

i doubt you're going to see dp 1.4 in any laptop anytime soon. They're always way behind on the port specs.

gonna be max-q if they wanna keep it that thin.

and I can't believe the 9560 still has only hdmi 1.4 port.
What, do they expect you to connect to a 4k TV with a dongle ? come on !

Agree. There's been these sparse mentions of DP 1.4 on a new TB3 Titan Ridge controller, but everything I'm reading states this is coming with 390 series chipsets and cannon lake processors, not Coffee lake which we'll likely see on the 9570. Still interested in how it would work but will probably have to wait until 2H 2018 for more details.
And yes, agree HDMI 2.0 should be included in any upgrade. Some sites suggest there will be a complete removal of HDMI in favor of add'l USB-C, so we'll see exactly how the I/O port selection comes out

Mostly, the iGPU does only supports 1.4 natively. But its fairly simple to add a LSPCON (level shifter and protocol converter) to convert displayport 1.2 streams to HDMI 2.0, which is probably what is used on the alienware models that have 2.0. The TB3 alpine ridge controller also acts as a LPSCON which is supposed to enable the HDMI support through the TB3 port. Maybe they figured the add'l mobo space and cost was unnecessary for the built in HDMI port in the presence of TB3, but that doesn't really fit with the idea of a premium/workstation 9560 in my opinion when the target users often have external 4k screens.
Coffee lake and newer processors are reported to support HDMI 2.0 natively

I tried to ask Frank about ghosting issues and whether they will be fixed or at least making a little faster panel response times but

"XPS isn't designed for gamers so panel response time isn't our priority as compared to brightness, color gamut, power consumption, viewing angle and other specs. This is why great gaming notebooks exist and are often times very different than ultra books and others." https://twitter.com/AzorFrank/status/931521167550308352

Its not just about gaming, you can see ghosting also in movies which is bothersome. Also why do 13inch xps have better response times than 15inch? Can anyone explain please?

I wish somebody would ask this Frank person about the possibility of a Dell XPS 17. Now then I would be interested don't get me wrong this upcoming Dell XPS 15 sounds interesting especially with 5K. But would want a XPS 17 inch with a 5K and I would even settle for 4K.

I mean it could have (Full-HD 1080p) after all we are a as a standard then offer 4K and 5K as options after it will be 2018 soon.

And as for 5K if Dell was to include that as an option you know a couple of months later or at somepoint in 2018 another oem will offer it also in a 15 inch or 17 inch. Probably asus, razor, hp, acer, Lenovo or msi.

I've been wondering about the 8th gen Intels. I've got an XPS based Precision 5520 with Xeon. My main programs are Revit and Navisworks which are primarily single core programs. I'm guessing i'll be better off with a higher clocked 7th gen over more cores and lower clocks on the 8th gen.

I wonder how the GPUs will be wired if the CPU packaging is that weird new one. There might be an AMD GPU and an Nvidia GPU in there. Unless the former is disabled with the 1060, a mux is going to be needed in software or the BIOS. I don't think Optimus will be possible.

Intel needs to clarify the SKUs between Coffee-H, and Coffee-G.

I don't think we'll see the AMD semi-dGPU option in the 9570 and only H series chips, especially not in a sub-model with a 1060 (or 1050 etc) as this AMD semi-dGPU is reported to come close to a 1050 on its own and would be redundant. I thought it would be interesting if a variant will continued to be offered without the NVIDIA dGPU, but instead of only the Intel iGPU, this combo chip is offered. However with what looks like a major motherboard revision required to fit this chip I doubt we'll see it in product lines that offer traditional dGPUs but may instead see it in laptops where a dGPU would have previously been impractical due to motherboard spacing (I.E. maybe the Surface pros, or the XPS 13 line??), or maybe thermal/power considerations depending on the specs of the chip. Details are scarce (at least as far as I've been able to find) so most we can probably do is guess until more performance, thermal, power, and layout specs emerge. One of the more interesting parts of Intel 8th generation to watch in my opinion

Agreed. Frank Azor from Dell clearly confirmed 9570 will be H series chip.

Similar question for everyone working on ultra-low latency audio programs.

Faster single core clocks seem to favour 7th gen. Most of us assume 8th gen chips will be significantly clocked down by Intel & Dell due to laptop thermal and power limitations.

But...maybe there will be some schemes to turn off some cores and boost speeds.

Also, Dell significantly improved latency performance in the 9550 & 9560 over the years via BIOS & driver updates. Admittedly, it took a long time to work out a lot of bugs and the laptops still are not perfect. But Dell has made a lot of effort.

Finally, Frank Azor confirmed ThunderBolt PCIe x4. That along with updated CPU & GPU indicate the motherboard will be significantly reworked. That could reduce hidden bottlenecks and unlock some additional performance.

On an unrelated note, is there a reason the XPS line does not have adaptive brightness? I don't remember one if there is (I know some use the camera so that might be hard considering the placement on the XPS 15. I just realized again how much this annoys me, and all of my other devices adjust screen brightness and keyboard backlighting based upon ambient lighting. Would be great to see this in future models

Yes, single core performance is more important in general, than many. There is an option in Windows 7 (msconfig-->boot tab-->advanced) for to disable few CPU cores, so it would ensure maximal frequency for the rest of the cores.

So there is a test on notebookcheck about the 1060MaxQ version Dell Inspiron 7577. Surprisingly it consumes somewhat less power than the 1050 in XPS 9560.

    Here:
    XPS 9560 with i5-7300HQ and 1050:

You may think now, Inspiron 7577 throttling like hell, but actually not [IMG]. The GPU was doing 13000 3DMark11 points. I think XPS 9570 will be awesome and CPU cores disabling won't be necessary.

That's interesting, I take it those are full load numbers?

My 7577 ran super cool and more than doubled the performance of the 1050 in my xps.

But how is that possible? The GPU use the same Pascal architecture. Heavily undervolted by Nvidia?

I would still reccommend disabling two cores from the 6 or even three. Not even games benefit from 6cores. It will be cooler and rest of the cores will be able to keep the maximal frequency, which maybe will hit 4GHZ in 8700HQ.

Single core it might hit 4GHz, but multi-core it won't. Let's not forget that the HQ processors are either Kaby Lake Refresh or Coffee Lake, and probably not Cannon Lake (which I assume will be used for the Y series). So they still use the same 14nm process. Heat output is going to be pretty much exactly the same as previous 14nm CPUs (assuming that the core voltages of the CPU are the same). It won't have a sustainable 4.0/4.2 GHz corespeed for anything else than one or two cores. I personally would assume something like a 3.0 GHz speed for all 6 cores.
