I am in the market for a desktop replacement and I have been comparing the specification of the two graphic card options for the new Dell XPS 15 L501x

    • GeForce GT 420M 1000 MHz (fill rate 6.0 bil/sec)
    • GeForce GT 435M 1300 MHz (fill rate 7.8 bil/sec)

The only difference is the processor clock speed, is upgrading to 435M going to provide a noticeable difference?

I was originally opting for the Sony F13 until I saw the new release of the Dell XPS series..

It all depends for what purpose you need the laptop. 435 is definitely little better than 420, so if ur up for gaming and graphics oriented work you will notice some difference. You should keep in mind that when u choose 435 you will have to choose the quad core and you loose Optimus support and hence considerably less battery life. So ultimately it all boils down to your work preferences.

I use this benchmark list to compare video...
Mobile Graphics Cards - Benchmark List - Notebookcheck.net Tech

Comparing 3DMark06 scores is a quick way to see the difference.
Unfortunately they didnt benchmark teh 435 yet.
    They did rank the 435 49th vs 420 67th.

The 425 58th is 15% better performance over the 420.
I'd extrapolate the 435 is 30% better performance than the 420.

Like the other poster mentioned, you lose Optimus on 435.
Seamless gpu switching. If you plan to game a lot 435, if you plan to do schoolwork, 420.
