First time using a program like this. I downloaded it and have it running. What exactly should I be looking at?

Oh and my computer froze maybe a minute after running it, while on battery power.

What happens if you set the Realtek as default audio device? It think it should work (of course only using hdmi only for video and Realtek SPDIF for sound) I'm sure there is no any quality difference between the two audio devices since both are digitals and the 5.1 sound is RAW audio signal transmitted to your received in both cases.

I run Black Ops at 1080P with Vertical sync set to off and no AA or AF, Trilinear filtering and automatic setting for textures and average 45fps, with zero hickups. To be fair, while troubleshooting, I modified the config file to disable some effects manually and I have not had time to try a standard config file with all the bells and whistles still enabled.

I ordered Tuniq TX-2 thermal paste today for my other PC and it should arrive in a few days. I was also thinking of repasting my XPS15 since the GPU temperature reached 95C when I was playing B:BC2. Does opening up my XPS15 to change the thermal paste void its warranty? I didn't notice any warranty seal on it.

Yes changing thermal paste voids the warranty, there is no seal, but if the technicians notice that in case of any problem, you could have your warranty voided.

Hi can anyone have a look at their 6200 card and tell me model and part number please?

My XPS 15 came with the 1000N card but I ordered the 6200AGN. Dell have sent me out two 6200 AGN 622ANHMW cards and neither of them work.

    Model: 622ANHMW
    P/N: 02GGYM REV A02

Can anyone confirm if their 6200 has the same model or part numbers?

I have tried again to install the 6200 in my system with no luck. I uninstalled the 1000N then removed it and installed the 6200 and the 6200 is either not recognised or installs but says that no connections are available. This happens with both the 6200 cards Dell have sent out to me. I have tried reinstalling the proset software, removing it completely and reinstalling it, nothing seems to work.

When I put the 1000N card back into the laptop, it works straight away, it is recognised, installs and picks up all the available networks.
The problem is the 1000N gives me crappy coverage when I am in some rooms of my house. :(

My computer failed ten days ago. After they sent me a fix that did not work, I called them a week ago today and they said they would send out a motherboard via one day service and have it installed.

Yesterday, six days later, I got an email saying the part would arrive today and I would get a call between 10 and 12 a.m. to set up an appointment to repair it today.

No phone call today. I have had my computer for twelve days and it only worked the first day and I am still waiting for Dell to fix my $1900 L501.

My replacement showed up yesterday, 12/21. I'm not there to inspect it but according to the Service Tag #, it came with better specs. :) 6 gigs of Ram and the i5 560. It took only eight days from the time it was approved to my front door, not bad, not bad at all.

IF you know the Service Tag # then go to the Dell web site, then Support, then System Configuration and type in your Service Tag # and you will see your spec's.

    Roxio Burn

I tried to use Roxio Burn today for the first time to try to copy a CD. When it started it updated itself to a Jan 2010 update. It required a reboot after installation. When I tried to run Roxio Burn after reboot, nothing happens. I tried inserting the disk to be copied and nothing happens. I checked Task Manager and RoxioBurnLancher.exe and Roxio Burn.exe are running as Processes. Any thoughts on how to make Roxio Burn work?

Had a similar issue after doing some system "cleanup". Thankfully I had backed up my registry and a quick restore did the trick.

Have you made any system changes, say, with CCleaner or Glary Utilities? If so, you might want to consider "undoing" those changes.

I am receiving many static shocks with my XPS 15. If I leave the machine for 10 minutes and then come back and touch the palmrest, I'm likely to get a shock.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Make sure you're not in US-International keyboard mode. You may see a keyboard icon on your taskbar. If not, go to the control panel and see if you can set it back to just "US." It does this because that's the shortcut for typing umlaut characters like ä or ë.

Do you mean using the system sound instead of HDMI sound when the HDMI cable is attached? If yes, go to Control Panel | Hardware & Sound | Sound and set the Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) to default. Or, set Realtek Digital Output to default if you're using the S/PDIF. (If that doesn't show up, right-click to show disabled devices, then enable it.

EDIT: Haha, I didn't notice pituky's reply. Hope it helped anyway.

I had a similar experience with my XPS 15 before I returned it for a refund.
I miss my old XPS M1540. The build qulaity of the XPS 15 is no match to its older brother.

This started popping up after I ran CCleaner. Is there any way to stop it?

I went to Start menu and typed "Intel my wifi..." and clicked on the entry that came up.

In it it is shown as enabled.

    Hey everyone,

First, a big thank you to all the insightful posts here. I've been trolling this forum and I decided to take the plunge and purchase an XPS15. It is fantastic. Let me know if I can help answer any questions with my rig, current setup:

    Processor: i7-740M
    Graphics Card: Geforce 435M
    Display: 1080FHD
    RAM: 4GB
    Wireless: Intel 6200N

I also manned up and did a teardown and repaste with Arctic MX-4. In my biological lab, ambient temperature 20C, the CPU temps dropped from max: 87 to 77 although the GPU is still on fire at 96C max =|

Are you in a cold and dry environment? What is the background level of static shocks you are receiving? The palmrest is metal so that's probably why...

I went in to the Dell Webcam Center and took a picture of myself and then clicked the envelope to forward it. Not only did the picture not get forwarded, but my Windows Live Mail stopped working for that account. When I tried the same thing for another account, that account stopped working as well.

After a search with Google, I discovered it was the Webcam Center which had screwed things up. I totally deleted all my Windows Live files and brought them over from my old computer a second time. Everything works fine again.

You have to have a sense of humor to order the L501.

First, their estimated date of delivery was wildly off.

Second, a week went by and the repair of my computer with a new motherboard did not occur. On the second time, I accepted their offer of a new computer. The next morning I got a call from a guy saying he would come out in the afternoon and replace the motherboard.

The L501 is working great for the last 24 hours, but I am waiting another day or two to call and see if a replacement is on the way and if all is well, will cancel the replacement.

All the people that I contacted from Dell were prompt and courteous. The tech guy (from another company) who replaced the motherboard was quite good. It just seems the company is very disorganized.

Reminds me of a number of years ago when I worked at a company where we had a leasing partnership with IBM. IBM could not get us our partnership K-1 on a timely basis. When I talked with Price Waterhouse, I was informed that they could not get the return done on time because IBM's computer that was supposed to gather and send the financial info was always crashing.

    Hi

I'm going to swap the HDD (standard 500gb 7200rpm) for an Intel X25-M 120GB SSD one of the following days.

Is there any sorts of benchmarks or such you'd like me to do, let me know. I'm going to mirror the disks, so the benchmarks will be very compareable.

    Opened my replacement today.

It was all good till I turned it on. Tight hinges, solid fitting CD/BluRay tray and then I started it up to discover that it doesn't have the 1080p screen. The speakers sound great though. Much better than those on my original. I can't get over how awful this screen is in comparison to the other one. On this one everything looks washed out and the viewing angles are terrible. Gotta constantly adjust the LCD to get a good view.

On the shipping order/list the screen is listed as,

    Item Number 320-1672 15.6HDF TLF LCD L501x

Strange how they wrote it as HDF, it's almost like they wanted to call it High Def Full. Anyway, on the original laptop its listed as,

    Item Number 320-1673 15.6FHD TLF LCD L501x

Dell did up-grade me to the i5 560 and 6 GB of RAM but honestly, I'd take the 1080p screen over those up-grades any day of the week especially now after getting a look and the cheaper screen. The difference is night and day between the two.

I wonder what my chances are of getting Dell to send a tech out or let me swap out the screen from my first laptop to the replacement before I send it back.

Update - I called Dell. They will send a tech with a new 1080p screen to replace the 720p. Going out of town for 3 weeks so, darn it, gotta wait a while longer.

I am in the Pacific NorthWest -- cool and wet, very wet -- only 200 ft from the ocean. I have no static problems with my desktop or any other computers or equipment I have used while living here 10 years. So I think it's something specific to the XPS 15.

Now it's making sense that one or two people reported the speakers were a disappointment, contrary to the majority view that the speakers are great.

So now it's also a lottery with the speakers and not just the paste job  :p

With mine it was the sub woofer. It sounded like it was busted or had something laying on it like a piece of paper that made it vibrate. FYI, there is a plastic covering over the sub woofer that needs to be peeled off, IMO even though the plastic has holes in it. It could be left on I guess to protect the speaker from scratches but I don't see any reason to block the sound even a little bit so I peeled it off.

I have a problem with DVD drive in my XPS...
In device manager it says that windows cannot load the driver for that hardware. Driver could be corrupted or missing.
So I went to Dell support page, just to realize there is not such a driver available there
    My DVD is HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT32N
I'm not sure if this was the issue since I received it, because I didn't use the drive for first several days.

    Any ideas?

Did you set it to "Do nothing" when the lid is closed under the appropriate heading (On battery / Plugged in)?

It should be something like this:

    Update:
Due to some issues with dynamic disks I decided to do a fresh install of windows on my new SSD.
Now I have almost all the same gadgets, etc set to start on boot. Still, the numbers won't be as comparable as I hoped.

    Anyways.
Old boot time, 7200rpm HDD: 1 minute and 43 seconds
New boot time, Intel SSD: 30 seconds

Hey if anyone with the Intel N6200 wifi has the module cover off their XPS 15 could you have a look at the N6200 card and make a note of the model no. and P/N.

    Cheers

I have a question about my Nvidia graphics drivers. I have Intel Core i5-460M 2.53GHz and NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M 1GB graphics with Optimus. Currently I am running what driver came with my XPS 15, the 8.17.12.5939 version. On the dell website it shows a newer version which is 8.17.12.5951, A02. Should i download that one and install it like the instructions say? Not sure if anyone has had any experience with this that they would like to share.

After 1.5h conversation with Dell customer service I just ordered a replacement for my XPS15 - huge vibration on DVD drive and terrible quality of screen.
I would strongly advise not to order standard screen, it's pure crap... no contrast at all and viewing angles is simply joke, so I changed configuration to premium screen.

Everyone keeps talking about the crappy screen that comes with the XPS 15 720p. My question is that are all the 720p screens affected? If not, how can I tell which ones are the afflicted models?

Would anyone be interested in trading their standard 6 cell battery for my 9 cell extended battery? I'm going to test the sound (subwoofer) without the extra lift that the extended battery gives to see if there is a difference. If there is no difference, I think I'd like to trade for the standard battery to save on the added bulk. It's not too bad, but I plan to take my laptop with me between work and school every day so the extra space in my small belkin backpack would be pretty useful. Any takers if I decide I want to trade?

I might be interested! I take mine with me to class with the 6-Cell battery too. Do you know if it makes it noticeably heavier? I have a cooling pad that I use under mine when I game and the 9-cell battery might actually make the pad fit to the laptop better with the bump. Also, if I did decide to trade, would you trade back if it did not work out?

It will add some weight but I honestly don't think it adds a lot of weight. The only real "issue" I may have is the added size. I tested the sound and I don't notice any difference with the woofer being flat on my lapdesk vs. propped up with the extended battery. I don't mind the laptop being propped up at all, it may help with the cooling even, but it would be nice to have a flat surface in my bookbag for my school notebooks and binder to lay on. I'm still considering what I want to do. I think if I decided to trade, it would be fair to ask the person receiving the upgraded battery to pay for shipping both ways, since it is a more expensive battery. If this sounds good to anyone, you can pm me or I'll check the thread and probably make my decision tomorrow.
