Oh, I thought you just needed guides for swapping the HDD and RAM. The one you listed will work. If you mean what kind of RAM is currently in it, mine has Samsung. Or the type you need to use, it needs to be the following:

    204 pin SODIMM
    DDR3 PC3-10666/DDR3-1333

If you have an i3 or i5 CPU, you can also use DDR3 PC3-8500/DDR3-1066. It will still work with DDR3 PC3-10666/DDR3-1333, but it will just run at 1066 speeds.

I have a 17 which has two HDD/SSD bays. You need to replace the optical drive with an HDD or SSD in a caddy to add a second drive to the 14 or 15.

Well, I think I might go ahead and send mine back. Throwing the idea around. Got a Cool Master U3 in and positioned a fan over each vent and it is still hitting 89-90 C on BFBC2 with settings on Low. Don't feel comfortable disassembling this thing and trying to repaste it. I've had it for like a week 1/2. Will they take it back?

Yes the green boards with black chips are RAM. Someone made a guide for adding a drive to a 17, but I haven't seen anything for swapping a drive or RAM.

Not black screen, but it will quit the game, go back to Windows and shuts down, like how we normally shut down windows. Its getting really annoying. I do turn on WiFi when I'm gaming. I am too a little pissed right now with this problem but you problems are much more severe than me, I hope Dell do something about it.

Does anyone know a way to get back the custom Windows Mobility Center if I did a clean Windows install other than restoring the original image, please? Thanks.

So I would like to start with a clean system, but I see that there are 30+drivers for my XPS.

I tried following the Dell guide to get the correct order after my clean install, but the driver install directions are vague. Do I need to install all of them in each category? If so, does the order matter within the categories (eg. networking)? Thanks.

    Hello everyone,

I know this has probably been answered several times in the 100+ pages of posts (New user here), but my question before I purchase is will I be able to get a CD able to do a clean reinstall of Windows 7 on my computer, without all the bloated and unwated software preinstalled when the computer ships. A CD similar to an OEM CD. I am reading various other sites that Dell mainly uses a recovery partition and when requested for CD's, only provides a recovery partition CD. The recovery partition I know reformats it back to factory default, with all the bloated preinstalled software. Dell Support is being once again extremely vague in their answer to my question.

    Thanks!

Has anyone tried getting Dell to put the BD-RE drive from the XPS 14 into the XPS 15? I want the 1080p resolution and the BD-RE drive. I'm not aware if they can build unique configurations over the phone or not. Maybe the part can be ordered on its own and replaced manually?

I remember the order you should start with is the following:

    1. Dell System Software
    2. Chipset Drivers
    3. Intel Integrated Video Driver unless you have an i7 CPU
    4. NVidia Video Driver

You only need to install for what you have the hardware. You should be able to find what hardware you have on the packing slip or you can dig into Device Manager.

You can either buy the recovery media when you order the laptop, or you can use the following form once you get your order number and service tag to request them for free. I really don't understand why you can't just get them free with the laptop if you can request them free after. They even sent mine overnight when I requested them after.

    REQUEST BACKUP DISCS

    I appreciate the response.

I am thinking maybe the Dell System Software may be not be necessary, based on a quick search of other threads here and on other sites.

I do remember before I reformatted looking at my Drivers CD and seeing a checkmark on the MySystem list to indicate what hardware was detected. I am guessing then I can just install for that stuff. Wish I had written it down.

Yea if you use the Drivers and Utilities disc, it tells you what drivers you need. Those might be obsolete though, so just compare the versions on the disc to online and use online if it is newer.

I did my clean install before I saw that post and never installed Dell System Software either.

Nah, just the screws are pretty small, and when I was putting the SSD back in, it was a little tight, but if you just go slow, it will go in OK. I don't know how the bay size on the 15 compares to the 17 though since the 15 only has one.

    Hi Guys

I'm a newbie and just want some advice on my new xps. I've noticed that the left side palm rest and the base of the laptop get really warm. unfortunately as I'm not a tech minded lady, I dont understand how to check temps etc.

The fan does kick in and its not loud - gentle hum to be fair but I'm just bemused as to why the laptop- the base in particular gets so warm. Your advice and guidance (idiot guide) ;) would be greatly appreciated.

I dont game and at the moment I'm just web browsing etc, my laptop has these specs.

    Thank you

    Julie

    Intel® Core™ i5-460M Processor (2.53 GHz,3M)
    Memory
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
    Keyboard
    Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
    Video Card
    1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 420M Graphics Card(Wireless N1000 Card Only)
    Hard Drive

That doesn't seem normal. My 17 only gets warm when gaming. The 15 is smaller so there isn't as much room to dissipate the heat, but the i5 and 420M should also produce less heat. You can check temps with HWMonitor. I can't remember what my CPU normally is when I'm not gaming. I know the video card shouldn't be over low 50s Celsius. You should probably call Dell unless you know someone who could reapply the thermal paste to the CPU and video card. Or you could try using something to prop up the back of the laptop to increase airflow or try a cooling pad.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly, I think I'll call Dell as the right side of the laptop is stone cold - palmrest and base of unit. The warmth starts from the track pad and makes its way left towards the left palm rest and air vent.

The majority of the heat in the base is coming from the large screwed in compartment :(

Anyone else experienced this? please share your tales with me. Really love this laptop apart from this issue and was pleased to receive it earlier than expected.

Warm or should I say HOT regards

    Julie

Let me guess: the wifi card?

As dumb as it sounds, it consumes as much power as an idle cpu when downloading stuff at an moderate rate (about 2W)

I turn on the laptop, key in my password at Windows welcome screen, went to get a glass of water, came back to my laptop and the laptop is in the process of shutting down!! Dell is out of the 1080p screens, once again. Wonder what is up with that.

Put a call in to have my LCD replaced and they issued a dispatch number and told me I would get a call from the repair tech. Two days later, I get a automated call from Dell informing me that the parts for my repair are on back order. So much for Next Business Day repair service.

I don't know where the fault lies but its just a wee bit ridiculous that Dell can't have them on hand or get the LCD's needed to fix our laptops.

Should have took the 1080p out of my original and put it in my replacement. Would have been done with this screen thing a long time ago. :) Oh well, lesson learned, go with the gut feeling next time.

Just received my computer last night, (an exchange for my Studio 1558 that was DOA). I am working through updating drivers but I have to confess doing so is turning out to be one of the most confusing exercises (second only to working through dell customer support issues). I used the download manager to download all the recommended drivers but I was of the impression it would be similar to the Windows update experience. That did not prove to be the case. I gather I am going to have to launch each driver separately but since the file name is non-descript I am not sure what I am launching until I double click on it. So I gave up last night doing anything ( I do think I updated the BIOS) and thought I would come here and seek any advice you all might want to provide. Thank you.

Mine happens the same too, have you contacted Dell yet? Must be overheating or something? I think Dell are ignoring me! For me it happens less when I have wireless turned off, try that and see what happens!

Just a follow-up: the 9-cell battery I ordered from China off eBay arrived. Other than being grey, it has all of the Dell stickers/logos that are on the six cell. It's a 11.1v, 90whr battery. The Battery Name is Dell, the Battery Identifier is 275SANYODell, the Manufacturer is SANYO, and the Battery Chemistry is LION.

If it's a fake, it's a very, very good fake.

Also, with the 9-cell I'm able to connect to WiMax. I never got connected on the 6-cell. Either the WiMax antenna's on the bottom of the notebook or the slight height boost puts me in range of the WiMax tower. Hopefully it continues to work.

Has this been tested? I ask because under "Supported Devices" it still says that it does not:

Do laptops sort of have "break in" periods like cars do? I just ask because this silly thing while playing BFBC2 for the first couple of weeks I had it was running in the upper 80's C on the GPU when playing for 30 mins to an hour. The last two days however it suddenly is barely hitting 80 degrees C on the GPU. The temperature in my house is pretty much the same.

Well...after reading the 110 pages of the thread, i can finally say my L501x SHOULD be arriving next week and i'm really looking forward to it.
I will try to take loads of pics and benchmark the hell out of it (as much as i can)

    Hello everyone,

First post in this forum so excuse what I am sure will be a repeat question. Currently this thread is 110 pages long and it it just seems daunting to go through all of them right now!

I've had my XPS 15 for a couple of weeks now. i7 740, GeForce 435M, 4 GB RAM, Windows 7 Home, 6 Cell battery. Here is my question: idle temperatures seem to be within an acceptable range (see below screenshot), but the fan is ALWAYS on. Is this normal? Again, excuse the newbie question and thank you in advance.

Here is a screenshot from CPUID:

    Coffee,

I just got mine a couple of weeks ago and my fan runs 99% of the time, usually on low unless I am gaming. Might try a cooling pad too. Mine seems to kick off every once in a while once I got a good cooling pad for my desk. I really like the Cool Master U3.
