same thing happen to me. mine is 1 month old.
I wonder if Dell's policy like other companies(can't change unless more than 3 pixels) ?

Thanks for the info! I am not really a picky person but when I spend over $1000 on something I expect it to last more than a few months... Also since its just 1 pixel I was hoping I wouldn't notice but that thing is distracting.

Guess this means a call to Dell and from what I understand it will be hell arguing with them.

What are other i5 460m owners getting for windows experience index?

    My specs:

    i5 460m
    420 video
    6gb
    500gb
    1080 FHD

I'm running stock drivers, haven't changed anything.

My "experience index" seems a bit low at 4.5.

    Processor: 6.9
    RAM: 6.9
    Graphics: 4.5
    Gaming Graphics: 6.5
    Primary Hard Disk: 5.9

Are others getting more than 4.5 on the Graphics?

    Thanks.

Hi can anyone with the i5-560, 420M and 6 cell battery tell me how long they get on a single charge?

I only get 1.5 hours on a single charge, max 2 hours, when only browsing the net and 1080p screen turned down to minimum brightness and Dell power saver settings activated plus I have IE set to use integrated graphics!!

That's pretty bad, my previous Studio 1558 without optimus and i7-620M would last at least 2.5 hours, I'm beginning to wonder if I have a poor quality battery!!

I am 100% sure that I get more than 2.5 hours on similar system. I would even expect about 3.5 - 4 hours on very light browsing (no flash).

since you have optimus, it's calculating that using the intel graphics chip. If you disable optimus it should go up quite a bit.

Any easy way to turn off Optimus? I went to the Nvidia control panel and switched the 3d and physx settings from "auto select" to the nvidia selection, and then ran the windows experience assessment once more. Same result. 4.5 on the graphics. What am I doing wrong?

I got my laptop delivered today. Used it for about an hour and enjoyed the 1080p screen and the sound. But soon after I took it to the living room and sat it there idling, it started to smell like something was burning. The computer turned off, and you can smell the burning of a circuit board.

When trying to turn on the laptop, the battery lights flashes twice then it dies. I contacted Dell and they'll send a tech to replace the motherboard, hard drive, power adapter, memory card reader and battery. :S

So i just found another dead pixel on my monitor that I am positive wasnt there yesterday. This laptop hasnt left my living room and I baby it (wont even eat or drink around it) so i know there is nothing that i am doing wrong. This is really irritating me and Dell is going to get a very "nice" phone call.

any luck ? even if you do eat or drink near it, I doubt it will do any damage to the screen. (probably keyboard)
I live in small rural area. I always get my computer from local reseller. so basically it's pain to do warranty unless it's big problem.

    Hi all

I am new here. About to purchase an XPS 15. However, I have two quick questions:

    1. Is the 1080p screen really worth it? Is web surfing difficult because everything is smaller? Would you recommend the bluray drive?

    2. Does the 9 cell make the laptop look ugly and make it much heavier?

    I really appreciate your help
    Thank you

I love the 1080p screen. Though I would prefer the 1920x1200 resolution instead of the stupid "OH IT'S FULL HD!" crap.

I don't see how you could live with only 720 vertical lines of resolution. I do a lot of photo editing and such though and lots of multitasking....just couldn't live with a smaller amount of screen real estate.

Web surfing is fine, if you have trouble reading the font, you can always make the font larger with your browser very easily.

I like the 9-cell, it tilts the laptop up so my hands are in a slightly better typing position, as well as allows for better airflow under the laptop. I don't think it makes it look bad though that's a personal taste thing. It also gives a decent way to grip the laptop without fear of it slipping.

I don't know how much heavier it would really be, it's not like this is a light laptop anyway.

before buying xps 15, I thought 1080p was hyped and causes everything too small. after getting 1080, wow what is a difference. I can't believe I have been using nasty low resolution laptop before getting xps 15. after using 1080p screen, every laptop at best buy look horrible. plus, you can use window display setting and set it to > 100% to make icon and text as big as you like. I set it to 125%. plus, any web browser has its own zoom setting. I set my google chrome zoom setting to 144%.

I have 9-cell battery, it is heavy and bulky and makes the laptop looks less nice. but I love the fact that it lasts 4 hours of usage. since I use my laptop at home, heavy and buiky are not issues for me. if you travel alot, it could be an issue.

Like the others said, I absolutely love the 1080 screen & agree on the how the 9 cell tilts the device to allow some air flow underneath the system plus make it easier to while on my lapdesk.

As far as weight...I wasn't concerned with that. I use my XPS M1210 for portability though its not getting much use anymore....

Well, my lappie finally arrived. Ordered sometime in december and delivered to UK on the 29 of jan and finally to me in Nigeria 4 days ago.

HD screen is mind boggling, no clicking sound from sub here, cd tray is solid. Just a few niggles...

    1- No backlit keyboard
2- Intel wifi LAN 1000 installed instead of 6200
    3- 6gb RAM rated at 1066 instead of 1333

Other than these it's just fine.

Questions tho. Can I get the backlit kb to buy or get dell to replace it? Will I need to return the 1000 card for the 6200? Can I install and configure these on my own?

2 of the dell guys I spoke with were pretty clueless so any help will be much appreciated.

The same thing happened to me, they sent out a "technician" twice with two new 6200 cards and neither of them worked in my system. So I'm still stuck witht the 1000N and Dell are completely ignoring me now, pretty clueless is how I would describe my dealings with them also!!

That button turns on/off the trackpad. An orange LED will light up above the trackpad when it's off.

The RAM is rated to run at 1066Mhz for i3 and i5 processors. It will run at 1333Mhz only for the i7 processors. It is mentioned on the customization page also.

I'm thinking to change it to toggle fullscreen, as I use F11 for that often but now because of the media keys...

Yes initially I ordered mine with the 720p and immediately regretted it once I received it. I called Dell and complained about the ridiculous quality of the 720p and they allowed an exchange without restocking fees for 1080p. Difference was beyond night and day, higher resolution aside, viewing angles, color gamut, and contrast was far superior; the 720p is a disgrace to the XPS line.

It's just awesome .. my old XPS was this res too but the panel quality wasn't nearly as good.
Hats off to Dell for choosing a great panel .

hey guys. What do you use for firewall/antivirus on your XPS 15?

I used Norton back in the day but haven't for a few years because it became so bloated. Did anyone install Norton Internet Security on their new L501 without any problems/freezes/crashes? I am thinking about switching back.

I want to make sure it wouldn't mess up my new system. Thanks!

Are you on Windows 7? Just use the Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Firewall. The firewall in Win7 is way better than previous versions. You can get MSE here.

    Yes, Windows 7.

But isn't the Windows 7 firewall for inbound only, meaning it allows all outbound connections by default?

I have an S-XPS 1645 - I use Kaspersky Internet Security and I've never had a problem at all, it installs smoothly and after a week or so its fine without being too annoying asking you things all the time. And if you get keys from resellers on ebay or other places, they are quite cheap. And if you dont like it, it un-installs without a hitch, easy as un-installing any other program.

Otherwise, on my netbook or other laptops without the resources to run KIS without slowing down, I use Miscrosoft Security Essentials, it works perfectly, and its free. Haven't had a problem as of yet.

I don't use it .. had some issues with it on my first reinstall and don't even have it loaded now..

Didn't load 3/4 of the dell stuff.. only what was needed to avoid the yellow ! in device manager..
Had two of my first reinstalls blue screen with all dell software installed during..

Has been stable since going this route with only what was needed as above.

It does inbound and outbound. Open the "Windows Firewall with Advanced Security" program.
