Mine's fine while booting with multiple USB devices plugged in, including several MassStorageDevices and HIDs, and it boots up fine, although it spends 2-3 seconds -extra- in the BIOS loading screen when they're plugged in, probably checking if they're bootable, or initializing them. It does boot without problems.

Maybe you should take a look at your boot order.

I am just not using my 2nd laptop as much as I thought I would and thinking about selling it.

What do you think I should price a very slightly used L502X system on Ebay/Craigslist with:

    i7-2720QM proc
    8gb DDR3 2 DIMM ram
    Standard Keyboard
15.6 Full HD TLF B+RGLED LCD monitor
Nvidia GeForce GT540M 2GB graphics with Optimus
640 GB 7200 RPM SATA hard drive
    Elemental Silver Aluminum (wlan)
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Dell Hardware Limited Warranty, ( 8 months left? does this transferr from initial owner?)
Recovery DVD for Windows 7 Home Premium OS, 64bit English

I payed about 1483.00 USD for this system with discounts and everything. Was toying with still asking aproximately 1200 for it but systems get old so fast was wondering what others would think the value/price on this laptop would be to sell as a private owner.

The middle of page 74 of this Thread contains the driver order, and what is optional. I dropped 19 installed apps from my OEM configuration in Add/Remove programs. I went from 92 OEM processes that were running down to 53 (and could probably drop 5 more easy). This should tell you it's really worth it.

    As Rogo said...

    But to me.

The time and effort was not worth it at all for a beginner or an experienced person.
Dell is pretty much close to clean already.

    CUSTOMER SUPPORT STORY:
Hey all, here's a real story on the qaulity Dell's customer service.

At no cost to us, Dell replaced our 2008 model 13" XPS M1330 with:
    • A L502X that configured at $1,720.
    • It included all the software CD's
    • Then provided free the $30 Sound Blaster X-Fi MB2 CD (not v1.2 it comes with).
    • They also sent the $99 Push2TV Netgear wireless adapater for Intel Wireless Display.

The M1330's had Nvidia GPU problems which ended in a $100mil write off for Nvidia in 2009. Dell replaced our M1330 in early 2009 with a brand new M1330. But we even had issues with that one. So last month Dell shipped us this 15", very loaded XPS 15 (L502X). They let us decide between Alienware and the XPS 15 and eventually let us configure the options.

The transaction went down very smooth but did take a few weeks. Our Dell Service Advisor left the ticket open in a way that stalled it until the Sandy Bridge laptops became available. So we could get the newer model. Very nice of him - awesome person.

Although the L502X is somewhat boring looking, we decided over the massive Alienware. We do know a newly designed XPS is right around the corner, but did not want to wait.

I have the same issue, only with the 360 wireless adapter, it won't boot while it's plugged in, but will boot when any of my other usb devices are plugged in!

    Hi all,

A couple of issues with my new laptop.

The CD Rom will not eject the tray. Dell will send out a technician but they are currently out of stock of the drive which I find quite remarkable for such a basic item. Here is a video: YouTube - Dell XPS 15 (L502X) DVD Tray Problem

Also, the bezel in the top left corner of the display has come away from the metaloid back cover and it will not click back in. Again, Dell will send someone out but said they will have to replace bezel and metaloid back cover. This seems quite a major task or am I wrong?

As a mater of interest who do they send out? Local computer guys or directly from Dell? I am in the UK.

Anyone here ordered with any lid design from Dell Design Studio?
Is it possible to get the stock lid right now and get designed one later on?

Btw, I am leaning towards the "X" design

IMO: It depends which part of world you ordering from, bcos in India they got all crappy n real ugly girly sh*t designs. Secondly they charge around 3.5k (INR) extra for it, I would prefer going for some spec upgrade to spend my money in a better way. Also, such designs sometime prolong the delivery date exorbitantly. Heard a case where the guy got his XPS after 2 months just because of these designs stuff.
On Dell Indian website this X design is the only one which was slightky acceptable to me. Remaining are abolute junk.. I would not like any of those even if Dell gives for free.

    Cheers,
    KF

    Question to Experts:

I shall get my XPS machine in near future. Can someone formulate a quick checklist on the things to check once I receive. If something is wrong, I want to identify immediately so then some quick action can be take in time to make sure I get a completely new factory made replacement.

If there is some similar checklist somewhere on the forum can you please guide me to it by pasting the link.

    Cheers,
    KF

Yeah, I m from India only.
Agreed, All other designs are crap compared to that X design.
Even I was thinking of a spec upgrade instead of the Design but I thought to read some reviews first of that design.

2 months of delivery period is a real dealbreaker...

I got a new XPS 15. Speakers are quite good. I faced few problems though:

    * Audio-video sync issue in all the videos

    * Fan constantly starts and stops for every 3 seconds.

    * I have other laptops too, but only this one is giving static electric shocks.

    * One blue screen saying problem with usbnet.sys

    Are these known issues?

What is the difference between the two FHD screens? How is just adding 20$ worth of face recog software make it brighter and sharper?

NO Difference at all! The Display Panel is same. Its just that the The notebook will come bundled with some facial recognition software.

When using the 1080p RBG color display, one must wear the proper protective eyeware. I would recommend reflective CIA style sunglasses. If you still continue to feel eyestrain, you should remove the glass, make a bad pun, and then quickly replace them on your face while screaming.

But anyway, i'm glad you noticed the screen quality.

    You must be very...sharp

Joking aside, it is a very very nice screen. Speakers are great. Feel and build is rock solid, overall I'm pretty impressed :) I didn't take the dell extended eye warranty for when I need to replace my eyes, but oh well.

Can anyone who got one the the patterns on the back of their xps let me know how the quality of it is? Like, how does it feel and does it look good? (I'm thinking about getting an xps 15 with the "Secret Lake" picture on the back).

I was also wondering if dell does custom patterns? I would really love to have the lid black with an elder sign in the middle (for reference read the books by HP Lovecraft or look him up).

So do the XPS 15 machines come with multi touch enabled on the touchbad new?

I read something in the first part of the thread they don't. I asked dell and they said no (I wonder if they thought i was asking about the display because they said that tablet thing is the only one they make that has it)

SO Xps has multi touch keypads, yes or no?

You just go into the Synaptics driver settings. I just went to mouse settings and then to Device Settings tab, and from there clicked the settings button.

Yes, but you can customize some pre-existing gestures, not create a gesture of your own.

    Some Gestures:
There's My Favorites gesture where you: (in spoiler)

    My Favorites gesture
The My Favorites gesture provides a shortcut for launching a specified application or applications.

To enable this feature, select the Enable My Favorites gesture check box. To customize the applications that launch, click the Configure button.

    To use this gesture:

    1. Place three fingers down on the TouchPad surface. Ensure that there is a small gap between the fingers.
    2. Hold your fingers still until the application or applications begin to launch.
    3. Lift your fingers up off the TouchPad surface.

    Also, Flick: (in spoiler)

    My Favorites gesture

To enable this feature, select the Enable My Favorites gesture check box. To customize the applications that launch, click the Configure button.

    And Home: (in spoiler)

    Home Gesture
The Home Gesture enables you to clear your desktop by minimizing all open windows. Repeating this gesture restores the windows.

To enable this feature, select the Enable Home Gesturecheck box.

    To use the Home Gesture:

    1. Place the heel of your thumb down on the TouchPad surface.
    2. Hold your hand still until your desktop windows have been minimized or restored.
    3. Lift your hand up off the TouchPad.

    Also, Tap Zones: (in spoiler)

By selecting the Enable Tap Zones check box, you can configure each of the four corners of the TouchPad surface to act as different buttons when tapped. These corner regions are called Tap Zones.

Tapping in the center of the TouchPad always produces a left click.

If you clear the Enable Tap Zones check box, then a tap anywhere on the TouchPad produces a left click.

A variety of actions can be assigned to the tap zones.

    To enable Tap Zones:

    1. Ensure that Enable Tapping is selected on the Tapping page.
    2. Select the Enable Tap Zones check box above.
    3. Select the name of a Tap Zone in the menu tree to assign an action to that zone.

Also, Tap and Drag, pinch, zoom, rotate, 2finger scroll, etc.

Hey everyone, I got the XPS 15 a couple months ago, and so far I am loving it. I dont really push it very hard, maybe only when I play Starcraft 2, but it gets pretty hot still. I bought a cooling pad (Cooler Master Notepal U2 to be exact) and it has detachable and fans that can be moved to any position. My question is, what would be the best places for the two fans?

I finished reading all 90 pages of the thread earlier. Im almost positive im going to buy one, I have a question.

Seems like plenty of people were having problems with the advanced 6320 n card, mostly due to not all wires being connected it seems?

Does anyone know if they have sorted this out yet...didnt' know if anyone had recentley received one with no problems. Regardless, is everything fine after you plug those wires in?

If this card gives much better range than i would really like to have it....as long as it works.

Mine was fine, no problem with pushing out a signal to the TV, no problem with creating the "My Wi-Fi" hotspot, no problems at all. I have not tested range, but does appear to be much better through the rooms on our house than any other card we've had. I did pick up a couple new "neighgborhood" signals.

These lids are not snap ons like the Studio models so they have to be ordered with the laptop build. I tried to get one after the fact and was shot down. I even tried through a couple Desingers, who are not real happy about what is going on. These designers were contacted through an agency in New York to do some artwork for a project. But they later found out it was Dell, becasue they are always contacted from customers trying to get their designs who have had no luck from Dell. Either out of stock, or like the XPS 15 situation, the parts just don't exist for aftermarket sales.

So this doesn't sit well with the artists - that people aren't able to get their work, and they have no way of helping them. In fact, the artists have absolutley no conections at Dell because they were hired by a NY agency. They have to push away unhappy customers unable to help.

So what do you guys think about that ICC color profile?

I loaded it and quite honestly felt it made the display extremely dark. I tend to use all laptops on max brightness (makes everything seem more vibrant IMO) and I really wasn't feeling what that ICC profile did to the screen.

I understand it makes the colors more accurate, but is it also supposed to be more visually appealing? Or is the sole purpose for printing photos with accurate representation?

Hey guys, i'm a new user here.
Sorry if this isn't the correct thread to post it in...

Got my l502x 5 days ago, so pretty much brand new,
installed World Of Warcraft yesterday, and every time i try to play, the display sort of hiccups every 10 seconds, freezing for a couple secs, than saying "video driver kernel has stopped responding and has recovered".
    (or something like that)
goes on like that a few times than freezes up completely and dies until i perform a hard shutdown through the power button.

I tried installing the new nvidia 270.61 driver, and changed to performance power setting making sure the gpu was chosen to run the game.
    So far no luck.

Note that this is the first and only game so far i've tried running, so not quite sure if this is a global or specific problem.

Really appreciate any help you guys can offer a tech newbie in distress!
    cheers!

Just a quick update, tried playing starcraft 2, had no trouble until it suddenly completely froze after around 5-10 minutes of gameplay, hard shutdown again.

    by the way, specs:
    i7 2820qm, gt540m, fhd screen, 750hdd, 8gb ram, centrino 6230...
can't think of anything else of importance.

Guys, I have a 2 day old XPS 15 and I have one stuck pixel in screen.

Is there any thumb rule about the acceptable numbers of stuck pixels by Dell before offering a new screen?

    Windows Experience Rating?

Hi, just got my new XPS 15 L502x, but am unimpressed with the Windows Experience rating under W7 Home Premium (64bit): :(

Graphics 5.9 (might just be the Intel i7 emulation as 3D is 7+)
Hard Disk 5.9 (this is a new 7,200rpm 500GB drive)
    All other values OK: 7+

Will retest, but what values do others get?
    Thanks, Greg.

mine has 1 stuck as well.
if if its displaying one color ("dim") I think there has to be 6....If it is an entire pixel it only takes one.

Really dumb question here... My new XPS 15 has a thin plastic film between the keys. Is this something that is to be removed or is it there for protection? I can get an edge with something sharp and easily pull it up but if it's supposed to be there to keep moisture/dust out I'll keep it. Told you it was a dumb question! :^)
