You need to put three fingertips on the touchpad and slowly pull down.

Hey guys, I have been having a nightmare with the xps lol but not too much of a problem, my orginal xps l501x had to many issues, so dell replaced it with l502x and that arrived with a lot of dead pixels, now they are replacing it again. I wonder how many times they will replace it to get decent computer.

Dead pixels in the 720p screen or the 1080p screen?

Now I'm debating trying to send back the 9-cell battery with the bulge, for a flat 6-cell. I do a good amount of web surfing while sitting on the couch, and while it's not too uncomfortable with legs astride the battery bulge it's not great either. Wife is really not happy either. Gaming would be done plugged in and on a desk; laptop never leaves the house, and all I ask is that I can do a 2 hour movie on battery (output to HDMI). I can plug in every night.

Anyone else do the same or have some words against the 6-cell?

Not much to tell you. You'll get ~ 2/3 battery life at the expense of size/bulge. It's really a personal decision as to whether or not it is worth it.

On that note, I have a brand new spare 6 cell if you want to trade? I'll kick in $ on my end to cover the extra $ you paid for the 9 cell.

My previous laptop had a big bulge battery on the bottom, which I found really annoying to use on my lap, it's really uncomfortable. I settled for the 6 cell version, so I can use it on the couch and not get dents in my knees or legs.

I haven't tried using the BRD without the machine plugged in, but on the 6 cell battery, I get well over 2 hours of video at half brightness, and turning the brightness down further will extend that to almost 3 hours playing video from my home network.

Hey, small Tip from me :)
HDMI Port is using the Nvidia GPU. So if you want a decent battery life or a quieter Laptop, go for an Minidisplayport to hdmi adapter. MDP will be powered by the Intel Card which consumes less power then the Nvidia Card!

Hi New here, I bought the xps l502x with the low res screen here on special. Reading here about the great HD screen I ordered one from Dell and installed it myself following the service manual. Problem is I now have a 1920x 1080 display but its very pale and has fine vertical lines like the drivers not working correctly. I think I read somewhere that a better display connecter cable may be required for this upgrade. Anybody know? Orshould I be looking at the drivers?? Appreciate any help.

Dell sent me an extra one btw, if its hard for you to come by send me a PM and we can work something out.

The reason Dell shipped you the 130W adapter was because you got the Nvidia GT540m (right?). With this card the laptop can use over 100w at full load, but most of the time it wont. If you want to use a 90W with it it will work (I sometimes use my friends if I forget mine), as long as you're not really stressing the laptop (playing crysis 2 or something). If you do the laptop will probably just throttle and not perform as well as it would with the 130W.

I wish I could, but Dell "forgot" to install the software and it's not available on My Downloads on the Dell site. Figuring it'd be a simple thing to get someone at Dell to put it on My Downloads page, I contacted order support who after a few days told me to contact tech support who told me after the third time contacting them that since I have the "premium warranty" I have to wait until I get back to the U.S. for "troubleshooting".

Hm me neither. I´ve checked all software installed in my XPS 15 and there was no Software with Soundblaster tagged. I reinstalled Windows and found nothing on the Dell Driver Page or "My Download Safe" thing with something called soundblaster.
Is there something i´ve missed? I just have the maxx Audio installed (when you press the right softbutton)

Can someone comment on their XPS 15's fan.

My fan is on at low speeds all the time. Never stops. The noise is very feight, but somewhat annoying. Does your XPS 15 do the same? It ramps up as expected under either GPU or CPU load.

No, I'm not suffering from the on/off issues caused by application access tot he Nvidia chip.

I had exactly the same problem.

That does the trick apparently: A required CD/DVD device driver is missing, usb installation - Microsoft Answers

I just got a different Win7 image that worked.

    Good luck!

Soundblaster will create better quality because of it's extensive adjustments but certainly nothing noticable from the laptop speakers. It has many features for gamers (MB2) and other items like a Jukebox that can be added during install. It also includes THX audio adjustments. Either v1.2 which can be orderd with a Dell laptop, or v2 which can be purchased as an accesory, both install on top of Wavemaxx and replicates many of the features that come with Wavemaxx. To me, it just added confusion to the entire system of drivers although it did change to a cool audio icon in the system tray.

Here is a data sheet on Soundblaster X-FI MB (not version 1.2):
    http://www.creative.com/oem/resources/Software/X-FiMB.pdf

    Here is a demo of X-FI MB2: http://www.creative.com/oem/products/software/instructions.html?

There are more posts in this thread on this topic.

Hi everyone. I have a couple questions:

    1) Does anyone know how to clean the palmrest? I have unsightly spots on it from where I've spit while talking, and nothing I've tried has worked to remove them. On my older computers, Q-tips or cotton balls dabbled in water or rubbing alcohol always worked--even microfiber cloths applied with a tiny bit of hand sanitizer worked for me. But nothing has worked for me on the XPS.

    2) Does anyone else have an issue with the power cord not staying plugged in securely when using the computer on one's lap, or anywhere else where the computer does not stay still? I find it highly annoying, when the cord comes loose with even slight movement of the computer.

    1) Until its not discolored, like my first palmrest, your pretty much ok :D, I would however advise against any aggressive cleaners...they could leave a stain on the palmrest.

    2) Its probably a "feature", most users complained about it, as it happens to all XPS15s, even on a desk. See it this way, if you pull the cord accidentally it won't pull the notebook of the desk...

So I get an official XPS 15 L502x back-lit keyboard replaced.

For future references, the non black-lit keyboard has a steel backing, while the back-lit version has a white plastic backing (thicker obviously due to the LED's).

I find the non back-lit version to be a better keyboard. The buttons seem more grippy and the keyboard was less flex. However, the back-lit can't be beaten.

    Free shipping
    5% off
    Price 1285€[Ireland]

Cannot use any other coupon because it's thru my employer. 2Yr Next Day Hardware Support cost only 36 € which is very good price. What do you think about the price? Good enough?

Can't comment on the price (but in the United States, that configuration could be had for ~1200 or 750 pounds)

Nothing wrong with those specs. Get the back-lit keyboard even if you have to drop some configurations (ie 540m to 525m)

Prices in United States are much lower, in Ireland everything is very expensive. Even UK is cheaper the Ireland.

Thank you. that was my thought but Dell said it would not run the 10666 so I just wanted to check. I already bought it b/c it was 49 shipped for 2x4gb. Just checking to see if i need to return it. Don't want to mess up my laptop right out of the box and no one has given me a straight answer as of yet.

Don't buy the XPS 15 with the 720p screen. The 720p screen in the XPS 15 is one of the worst quality screens currently available (worse than many budget-class laptop screens), but the 1080p B+RGLED screen is one of the best by far. The resolution also makes a huge difference for multitasking, because you can't fit very much onscreen at once with the 720p screen. You need to prioritize the screen upgrade over than the processor upgrade and anything else, because it makes significantly more of a difference.

And if the 1080p screen isn't available or costs too much, don't buy the XPS 15.

No, Sorry, but that's not really that good of a deal to be honest. For reasons mentioned above, I highly recommend cancelling the order if you can and either re-ordering with the 1080p screen, or getting the $706 / $741 HP DV6z Quad Edition with 1080p and better graphics.

And you have to cancel the order soon if you're going to do so, because sometimes Dell is finnicky about cancelling orders if you do it too late.

    Hello,

I bought an L502X last week with 1080 screen and i7, it arrived 7 days later (today).

It's fantastic, but it has one niggle - The keyboard is raised on the right side.

It is quite noticeable, but other than that, the laptop works perfectly. My question is, is it worth sending the laptop back just for the sake of the slightly raised keyboard? If you apply pressure to the gap between the keys, it does not give much.

Here is a picture of the rise, it's about 2-3 mm above the rest of the keyboard:

It's a fair bit more noticeable than the picture shows.

What do you think I should do? Or is this just me being extremely picky?

    Thanks,
