esac, seems like you have the same issue as Occams_Cat did (look in the other L502X thread). First open up the bottom cover and check if both antennas (white and black wires) are attached to your WLAN card. Come back if that's not the case.

Yes, that's exactly how it works. All antenna wires go through the screen bezel and apparently Dell gets these bezels already manufactured with antennas - either with WLAN antennas only or with WLAN and WWAN antennas. I hate them for doing that

Maybe it's better if you let us know the type of Wi-Fi card you have.

Got a 6230 in my system. I can say without a doubt my new system sees more networks than any of my other laptops. Also all the throughput tests I have done have been faster in all instances. I am not getting any slow downs, copied over 400gbs of Music/videos to my home server wirelessly and had no problems. Not saying there isn't a problem , just that my system and setup is working as intended.

Seems that some users are having problems with USB 3.0, so I decided to get two 1TB 3.0 external drives to play with. Have not seen any unusal activity. No slow downs, no sudden disconnects and each drive was found and loaded normally by Windows.

The one negative that I have is the screen. In my opinion it is not as good a screen as on my XPS 1640, it feels like a step backwards. Even after color corrections everything is a bit washed out. The areas they did improve on is the screen has NO light bleedthrough around the edges. And the backlighting is extremely even thoughout the entire panel.

That was the culprit, thanks! the White wire was pretty much just sitting on top, not connected. My Lenovo can still see more networks, but the 2 networks in my house are now coming in full bars.

I have a Mobile HSDPA / GPS card as well in there, which is connected. But there is an extra gray wire just sitting disconnected. Any idea what this is supposed to be for?

First I thought the gray wire is for the optional TV module, but then it occured to me that it won't reach the other card slot, so it must be a third WLAN antenna for cards such as Intel 6300.

I don't have a L502X (Getting one soon :)) but I do have the targus lap chillpad for a laptop cooler. It's really good if you use your laptop on your lap or in bed a lot, but it also works really well on a desk. It's fairly large so it's not good for traveling, but it the best cooler I've ever had.

Hi everybody, I'm in the market for a new laptop and wanted to ask about what current owners of the XPS thought about their laptops. Primarily, I wanted to ask about the comfortablness of the keyboard, the screen quality, and sound quality. Also, are there any upgrades / configurations that anybody regrets or realize that they didn't need to waste money getting? Any feedback will be greatfully appreciated.

    Hi JanusSoCal,

Very comfortable keyboard. Screen probably one of the best in consumer laptops, make sure you get 1080p and sound is very good. Personally, best I have heard on a laptop.

Looks better than in pictures! Very happy with mine.

Rebellion, can you run PCMark Vantage x64 HDD Suite and post your scores?
I'm assuming you have the SSD that came from Dell?
TheSSDReview.com has some good things to say about that benchmark when testing SSDs.

I just ran 3DMark06. I've never run it before so I probably did something wrong.

    7592 3DMarks
Here is the link to the results:
    Result

Spec wise, 2630 processor, 6gb ram, 525 graphics card running the latest firmware from laptopvideo2go. I right clicked the program and told it to run with the dedicated graphics card -- but I am not sure that it actually did because some of the tests hit some low FPS.

Hopefully this helps somebody, if I did something wrong let me know.

I'm not the expert here, but looking at your results, it seems like the benchmark is using the IGP and not the 525.

Can somebody with an L502 in front of them (no, I still don't, so don't rub it in!) tell bmrowe how to make 3DMark use the 525 and not the IGP?

that score is about right for the 525m. these gpus are not that fast so a drop in fps in some tests is expected.

I got 7550 in 3dmark06 and my l502x has the same specs. i am 100% certain we are using the 525m because when I overclocked it my 3dmark06 score changed. BTW, the intel integrated graphics will post a score at 3000 or less.

Loaded12, do you think this cooler will work well with the XPS15 and a 9 cell battery? Obviously using an angled laptop on and angled cooler might be difficult. I guess you could use it backwards but would that decrease the cooling?

    have you the 1080p monitor?
Because if you haven't you can run 3dmark06 at standard resolution 1280X1024, maybe your test run at 1280X768 so you have higher score.

I would like to replace my old Dell C521 desktop with and XPS 15 or 17. However, I love using my two 24" monitors on my desktop PC.

With laptop can I drive two external monitors?

Your advice would help me on my switch from Desktop to laptop journey.

    Thank you

Ah that may be it, I have the 720p monitor. Which by the way is fantastic, im glad I did not listen to the ney sayers.
I thought it scales it down anyways if you run it on the 1080? Just had another look at the results it says it run it at 1280 x 768.

your score is so high because resolution in not the standard that is 1280X1024.
    GT540m at 1280X1024 & i7 2720QM have a 8300 score.

Im not sure if its relevent but my temps are sitting at approx 50-55C whilst writing this and the fan is going max on/ off/ repeat

Im just making sure its a real problem before dell comes and disects my laptop.

Mine does that as well. Weirdly enough, it doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes it will blast and then go completely quiet until the temps get past 54 or so and then go full blast again. Other times it goes into this on/off loop. I think it's bios settings. On the 1645 Dell went through MANY iterations of bios finetuning the fan control.

It seems that mine will only do this after I play a game and the temps get up real high. It will continue to do that even after the temps go back down unless I hibernate or reboot the machine.

Can anybody confirm that their L502x comes with a TPM security chip? I received mine, and despite Dell support saying twice now that this model comes with one, there is no option in the BIOS for it at all, and Windows does not see it either.

I AM unable to install the Intel Management Engine Driver which might have something to do with it, but I am wondering if in fact I can't install the driver because something in the hardware/firmware is missing?
