Should Dell be upgrading it for free? Or am I missing something?

No but if I am wanting to pay them 150 dollars more they should wave the 78 dollar fee. Seems pretty simple to me. not paying 225 for the 1080p screen. You can get an HP dv6 quad core right now for about 800 with 1080p and bluray. Plus on par graphics with the xps.

What is it with all these people that buy something first, only to find out afterwards they really want something else, and then blame the store for any cost involved in correcting their own mistake. It took me less time to do a search on internet and find out the one thing setting the XPS 15 apart is the FHD screen quality, than it would have taken me to go out of the house and to a store to look at the machine(s).

    hey guys

need advice on a keyboard issue. I have found that the keyboard of my L502X stops working sometimes. Not responding, not reacting, and just a restart helps. I think this is a software issue and not a hardware problem- as I read, the L501X had similar problems because of the driver.

Do you know, how can I fix this ? a driver update, or whaever ? I found something on the net regarding regional and input language settings, but it was not obvious what should be changed in the options and how.

    Instead of me explaining it.

Here's a video that tells you how.

    YouTube - ‪NVIDIA Optimus Driver Tutorial‬‏

Also, to control the default card for individual apps, go to managed 3d, click on program setting tab. Now you can browse which app to use which chard.

Maybe this explains why I thought the max bandwidth was 1333mhz (however it is dual channel RAM so maybe they advertised x2 I/O speeds) -

Incorrect Memory Speed Reported DDR3 PC3-10700 - Piriform Community Forums

Memory mark (passmark) is giving me a result of 1598 and a 3d graphics mark (passmark) of 620 (overall system mark 1902)

Has anyone else run PT7? Is this about right?

    Graphics card 540m - 2GB and PC3-10600 - 2 x 4GB (CPU-Z tells me it's PC3-10700 =/)

Fisrt of all i wanna thanks to all of you guys(and girls), i've been spending my last week reading hundreds of post about the l502x and finnaly i got mine :D
I had the l501x before, but i had a bad experience with it so i was in doubt about buying this one now, but with your helpi finally decided, so thx !

    Overall i got the l502x, core i7 2630QM , 4 gb ram, gt540 with 2 gb, and of course 1080p screen.
Now i have a question about the graphic cards.Unlike the l501x where the Nvidia control panel showed only the 3d settings, on the l502x the nvidia control panel also has the 2d settings in it, as i can control desktop settings witin. Now that means that both of my graphic cards run in the same time even for the 2d settings ?!

Or in other words who controls my 2d settings, as i can configure from both panels(intel and nvidia)

As nVidia tells it, it works like this:
"Using NVIDIA‟s Optimus technology, when the discrete GPU is handling all the rendering duties, the final image output to the display is still handled by the Intel integrated graphics processor (IGP). In effect, the IGP is only being used as a simple display controller (...)"

I'm not sure what that means for 2D settings, but I'd say it really depends on which is active, the IGP or the discrete GPU.

THX Appelsap, i've been also searching on the Nvidia techonlogy, and in some case i only got more confused.
In the intel CP it says that the iintel graphic card is useing 140 mb of RAM, now if every image/video data is routed through it, and i still use the GPU , even for the basiscs of the 2d tasks, where is advantage ?! I mean i get to use the GPU, at the same time i use also the IGP, and above all with the cost of almost 140 mb of RAM .

I now that onthe l501x it didn't let me install the nvidia drivers without the IGP drivers, (after all , only the IGP control panel was in charge of the 2d settings), but i wonder if on the l502x i cand skip the IGP video drivers so i get the only default video graphic to be the Nvidia one.
I haven't tried it in the first place cause i didn't thought to see any 2d setting in the Nvidia CP, also i recall that someone mention in a youtube clip that on the l502x core I7 the optimous isn't used, only with the core I5

Optimus works fine on my i7. And I can't imagine why you would want everything to go through the nvidia card, because it will severely impair the batterylife without any added functionality.

Yeah, Red Line is pretty much right. I can get three maybe three and half watching movies. If you get really aggressive with the power saving features and turn the screen brightness down it's possible to get darn near four. I'm very pleased with the battery life of a computer this powerful (Core i7).

My DELL XPS L502x comes with DVD Dual Layer writer having DVD Drive model "HL-DT-ST DVD +-RW GT32N". Yesterday i bought some blank media DVD+R DL having capacity of 8.5GB. I tried Writing files of size 6.44GB but after burning some 3.99 GB message pop up saying upgrade firmware for this drive. I checked on Dell Driver page and could not find firmware for this drive.

    My system config is:
    Core i7 2720QM
    6GB RAM
    Windows 7 64 bit OS

Anyone know how to connect the Dell XPS L502X to an analog VGA-only projector? I travel quite a bit and often find myself in conference rooms that only provide VGA connections.

I know there are HDMI and mini-DVI ports, but I've had problems getting those to work with analog projectors via VGA.

In the case of HDMI, I tried using two connectors (HDMI-to-DVI and DVI-to-VGA), but that obviously doesn't work because there is no digital to analog conversion in the connectors.

In the case of mini-DVI, I bought a mac connector (mini-DVI to VGA) and it works fine on my monitor, but does not work on any analog projectors. I'm guessing that the mini-DVI is outputing a digital signal as well, that my monitor is able to understand, but the projectors cannot understand. But this is just a guess.

Anyone have a solution for how to get this laptop to connect to an analog VGA-only projector?

Just wondering what hard drive your L502x came with?

My XPS 15 came with 750 GB WD Scorpio Black. High performance but really loud.

@gpufan: Erm you really sure that your laptop has mini DVI Port? :)
Its an Mini DISPLAY PORT. which should be able to source the vga Projector.

@BOB: Yeah my xps15 came with the scorpion too. Its OK with loudness. But i have it as an secondary drive (frist Drive SSD) therefore it only spins up when i listening to music/videos etc.
The performance for a harddrive is quiet decent though

I checked my XPS 15 order invoice and there is a separate charge for "In-Home Service After Remote Diagnosis" apart from the standard Limited Hardware Warranty & the Limited Warranty (two separate item #'s). I don't remember seeing this as an option while I priced my system, but now its showing up as a separate purchase on my order invoice.

    1. Is the only difference being that a tech shows up at home instead of me having to ship stuff to Dell?

    2. If you have the plain vanilla warranty without in home service, do you still have to pay for shipping charges to and fro?

    3. How is Dell's depot warranty? People over in the Asus forums dread sending their laptops for repairs to the service center due to a high propensity to damage other unrelated components. Is the Dell Service Center notorious in any way?

    4. Dell has charged me $55 for 1 yr In home warranty. Is it worth that much? Shall I demand a refund on that?

    1. Yes
    2. No (ship back to depot is free)
    3. Mixed bag. Just like on site contractors, some are good at their job, other times they mess up with your computer. Just call Dell and complain. Dell customer service is a huge bureaucracy, but you almost always can get what you want.
    4. I don't think that is too much. I recommend people buy 3/4 year extended warranty for Dell.

I returned it to get the 55 plus tax back, but I don't really mind dropping it in the mail if something goes wrong. I've heard stories of the tech that comes to your house messing up the computer, so I think that's a wash either way.

Has anybody had an issue with USB not working all of a sudden, it will stop detecting devices which are plugged in? Rebooting seems to fix the problem, but rather annoying.

New XPS 15 owner here. Apart from the noisy fan and occasional 'Click' sound quite happy. Are there any solutions for these problems? Weird problem i have is anytime UAC comes up, anything i open[chrome, windows explorer, WMP...] doesn't maximize full, there is about 4mm gap on the top.

I'm sorry, I researched this for a good 15 min out of curiosity and wanting to help, but all I can say is there is an adapter available when configuring new systems that says its a analog vga adapter. It has its own special icon in accessories / add-ons. I could not find a part number. I don't even know if it would work, but maybe it will help you find a solution.

Isn't apple using a propriety mini display port? Same jack but different wiring.
    ....
Oh wait... you can't use a passive adapter to go digital only output to analog input.

Get some kind of utility to track its heat easily (if you don't already have one) and scale the fans back. Which I'm not completely sure how to do cause I won't have one for another few days but I know it's possible.

I'm still unfamiliar with HW monitor, but if it is polling the discrete GPU too, that makes the GPU turn to nvidia for a short time which engages the fans.

Is that for a non-English keyboard or something?

My invoice lists the backlit keyboard as GRJ9V.
The non-backlit keyboard I just looked up at Dell is YG51N.
    Googled N76J4 and got nada...

Hmmm... strange! Maybe it's an internal number or something because a dell technician is coming to replace my US backlite keyboard with a UK backlite one on Monday.

Hello, I recently got a refurb l502x (a friend recommended it) and so far i'm loving the 2630qm and the 1080p screen. However, one thing i decidedly don't like is the wifi, which is the centrino 1030 n. my old computer had the centrino 1000n, and it got really nice speeds (20 mbps d, 5 u) on speedtest. However, even though the xps is by far a more powerful machine, it only gets 0.75 mbps dl and 5 ul. I hadn't changed anything about the network other than power cycling the router. I went on intels site, found i had the latest driver and that my settings on both the laptop and router were fine. I even opened the case back to check the connections, and the antennae seem to be connected properly. Now the odd thing is that on a wired connection, my dl speed is back up in the 20's, leading me to believe the problem either rests on the wifi card or is a software issue. anybody else experience this? any help?

Has anyone had problems with static coming from one (or maybe both) of the speakers on this thing? I've just received a replacement L502x for the faulty one I got originally, and looks like this one might be faulty too

My right speaker gives off a staticy noise, even when in the bios. I found a post here static from right laptop speaker - [H]ard|Forum that seems to indicate it might be a motherboard problem.

Really regretting buying this thing now, one problem after another with Dell.

Anyone got an idea about this? Talked to Dell Tech today, did some test, then he accessed laptop remotely, after one hour we had to finish[i had to go to work] He wasn't able to do anything really. He was doing things which i tried before. He will continue Monday. I will have to reinstall OS, most likely. Should i ask for new one?

Is this issue only when you run off of the battery or does it happen with ac power also? I know that somewhere in the power saving settings there is something about limiting the wireless card. It is intended to extend battery life but if it is getting in the way you can adjust it.
