I agree with you that the resolution is a bit too high for this size screen and can be a pain at times. Even with the 125% scaling, some programs just don't seem to scale up. In Photoshop, for example, the tools/UI are very small. You'll probably get used to it, unless you have bad eyes. I've gotten used to it, and otherwise put up with it just because everything else about the display is great.

I believe the return policy is 20 days and I'm sure they would exchange it if you needed to.

Regarding the replacement for the RAM, you´re right it is no problem and could be done from everyone without loosing the warranty (just unscrew 2 screws open the lid and pull the rams out, very easy)

However the HDD replacement is NOT covered by warranty, because you need to pop out the Keyboard and die Palmrest in order to get to the Harddisk. This Action is known as an Dell technican process and not a customer one, therefore you can not officially change your HDD and have warranty. BUT if you do it gently and have some "crafting skills" it will be very possible to change it back if needed without damaging the nootebook ;)

//EDIT: Im 100% sure here in germany with the warranty and the HDD. The situation in other countries is not known to me but i think its very similar.

Yeah, I know that RAM is really easily accessible. But could they possibly know you messed with it after you do so?

Exactly. I readed some reviews about the 1366x768px screen and it seems like the quality is just average... too bad they don't sell this RGLED with a 1600 res, that would be perfect

Another issue: the laptop came without a backlit keyboard... I thought it was included because I couldn't choose it as an option, but it wasn't. It seems like I'm not the only one with this problem, am I? It's strange because you can buy the (spanish) backlit keyboard on ebay...

What, you don't get the backlit keyboard by default?
I haven't definitively ordered mine yet, but I didn't see an option for a backlit keyboard either.
    What the F?

I noticed some of the price packages didn't let me choose the backlit keyboard when i ordered... it probably changes day to day... the package i chose didn't let me choose the os discs, but had the backlit... so be sure the keyboard option shows up before ordering... i think its a $39 extra option...

It seems like right now it's available on US laptops only... I guess you should talk with an agent before completing the order (too late for me)

Just curious how hot these laptops get when running more intense programing? My current laptop (non-XPS 15) after 2 years won't play video for more than 15 minutes without overheating. I think it's due to use but I want to avoid the issue in my next laptop.

I had a technician come to day to replace the 720p screen with the 1080p one after they sent me the wrong spec. However I've noticed some Flex on the bottom border of the screen where the Dell Logo is.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal, or has the technician not done their job properly?

In case anyone wonders, you can check with a little util called MonInfo by Entech. Run as administrator, and the full HD panel should give you this response:
    Code:
    Monitor
      Windows description...... Algemeen PnP-beeldscherm
      Manufacturer............. AUO
      Plug and Play ID......... AUO17ED
    (...snip...)
    Timing characteristics
      Native/preferred timing.. 1920x1080p at 60Hz (16:9)

no...right click on pnp monitor in device manager then select properties, then go to details....in the drop down menu select "hardware ids", if you have the 1080 screen you will see "MONITOR/AUO17ED" pic below

A lady came today to replace it and I've just checked and it's the one you've mentioned above.

btw. Do you have any flexing when you press the dell logo on the case under the screen?

Alternatively I think it would be easier to just right click the desktop and open graphics properties. From here you can adjust the screen resolution/see what it is currently set as. If1920X1080 is there then you have the FHD screen.

I consider to buy a XPS 15. I will use this laptop for multitasking, watching HD-movies (1080p mkv-files, wmv-files, Blu-Rays), photo editing (Photoshop CS5), office, winrar. I rarely play games.

I'm thinking of a configuration with Intel® Core i7-2630QM and Full HD 1920x1080 screen.

I don't know which graphics card I have to take: the GT525m or the GT540m. Is there a difference in performance between these two cards apart from gaming? Which one would you recommend? Thanks for the advice.

Both cards are same, but on different clock speeds, and if you are not gonna game, i think you will not notice any differences. 525m can be clocked easily and be on pair with 540m tho.

The 540M is 12% faster. That's it. Not really even worth $100 IMO.

That's true, it will tell you what the max resolution is. But Dell has been known to use different panels with the same res in the same model laptop, which could result in different quality of the picture. So to be sure you have the right panel, check the ID. The reason I posted the link to MonInfo is because this program reads the ID from the monitor itself, and the reference in the driver mentioned here a few posts back is taken from the system registry. Most likely that is the same, but that's not a given.

I have no flexing, unless I press reeaally hard, but I guess anything will flex if you apply enough pressure, so that's probably not what you mean ;)

I have a little bit of flexing, but it really does not bother me because it does not seem to affect the overall integrity of the laptop.

Hey, i'm having an issue with my XPS, I have posted a thread about it but I figured I might get a better response here. Mainly with League Of Legends, games crash on minimising, I think it is do to with my Optimus GPU but am unsure.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? If so, please tell me how you dealt with it!

Oh and also, here are my specs, if you can't see them.

    DELL XPS L502X (R2) - Intel Core i5 2410M - nVidia GT540M 2GB - 4GB DDR3 1066?mhz RAM - 500GB 7200rpm HDD - 1920x1080 RGBLED 15" - Backlit Keyboard - 2x USB 3.0

Yes, I've some flexing there (not enough so that pressing it will do anything, but enough so that if you do press it you know it's moving...). I don't really think it's an issue though, how often are you going to be applying pressure to the Dell logo at the bottom of the screen?

You can try adjusting the colors by using the calibrate feature in the display control panel, but you're never going to be able to make up for the terrible contrast ratio.

Return it and buy a new XPS 15 with the upgraded 1920x1080 display instead.

The NVIDIA-website says the GT540M has:

    NVIDIA® 3DTV Play™ and HDMI 1.4a Support5
Support for HDMI 1.4a including GPU accelerated Blu-ray 3D support (Blu-ray 3D playback may require the purchase of a compatible software player from CyberLink, ArcSoft, Corel, or Sonic), x.v.Color, HDMI Deep Color, and 7.1 digital surround sound. Connect your laptop to a 3D enabled TV and using NVIDIA 3DTV Play software, stream all your 3D content onto the big screen, including 3D gaming, picture viewing and 3D web video streaming. See www.nvidia.com/3dtv for more details.

See: GeForce GT 540M - Features - GeForce

It is not said about the GT525M.

See: GeForce GT 525M - Features - GeForce

Also the GT540M is listed here: http://www.nvidia.com/object/3dtv-play-system-requirements.html The GT525M isn't listed.

Is it true that the GT525M doesn't have these features?

    HI all-

    have a new L502X w/i7-2720QM, 8Gb RAM, GT540M and Intel 1030-N wifi.

    I'm having 2 annoying glitches:

#1 - I have 2 devices that aren't/won't install properly - the webcam and a PCI Simple Communications controller. I've tried deleting and reloading the webcam drivers to no avail. And in the other case, both the wifi and GbE cards appear to be working properly, so what network controller is this referring to?

#2 - my system fan is constantly in a start/stop/start/stop cycle. An nVidia GPU widget I downloaded tells me the GPU temperature and CPU temperature are low 50Cs (51-53C) so why is this fan constantly trying to start up and run when the system is not working hard?

A program is keeping your soundcard awake or one of your other hardware devices, which is preventing sleep. Process of elimnation by disabling enabling stuff I am afraid in order to solve it.

    1. Not sure, first hit on google but second post gives a suggestion Driver question -PCI Simple Communications Controller

    2. Close the widget and the Intel turbo boost gadget.

I've been looking to remove my cdrom drive for a few weeks now. I really don't use it. I use steam for games, and itunes for music. I also have a usb cdrom that I use for my netbook. But really, I haven't used a cd in a long while other then to do a fresh install. Any its not like this would be a forever change, I could always put in back in. So here is what I've found...

2nd HDD or SSD Caddy for DELL XPS 15 (L501x, L502x) [OBHD-SATA12-SATA-BU] - $44.75 : NewmodeUS, Hard Drive Caddys for Notebooks

It sounds pretty simple, remove the cd drive and put this thing in its place with an additional hard drive. Any opinions?

I have backed up my system with windows backup. If I use it to restore my system, will it destroy the recovery partition?

Does anyone know if you can use a 125v power cord from a sxps1645 on a L502x?
