Have you tried using Fn + F1, rather than Windows display properties?

Hmm yeah same here. If you pick duplicate from the Fn+F1 list, it ends up with (windows) screens 1 and 2 on the laptop screen (!) and screen 3 on the TV. You can then extend onto the TV. Intel or nVidia tools see a similar thing, only works for extend.

Same thing happens on the L501x and was put down to Optimus, with dell apparently working on it

edit: It won't let me download it. I wonder if they're having problems with it?

I would happily have a go at the BIOS update if I could! Got my XPS 15 on Monday and I'm yet to update any drivers. Expect I will start with the Video card, BIOS, and possibly chipset and sound. Anything else critical?

PS I just panicked that my soundcard/speakers weren't working.....I forgot I plugged earphones in round the side! Whoops.

There's a new thread about A04. I just flashed mine, and don't see any difference in the BIOS, other than it now reports A04.

Has anybody put a Memory Stick Pro Duo in the memory card reader? I tried, and it didn't seem like it fit very well. I had to get a pair of pliers to pull it out. It wasn't stuck, but it went in so far I couldn't use my fingers to get it out.

I updated BIOS, and both video card drivers. I used to have the 'fan cycling' problem every now and again. Now the fan just runs non-stop at a higher speed, never gets quiet. Quite noisy.

Don't suppose there are any new fan or temperature options in the BIOS now? Guessing not given the items Dell say have changed in A04...

What happens when you go to 'power saver' mode? My personal preference would be to have the fan run at 10% speed ALL the time instead of running at 50% on/off. I think Dell should make this an option and let the user decide in the bios.

I ordered this laptop for my wife and I have to say it's quite a stunner. I'm a hardcore PC gamer myself but I'm nonetheless impressed with the aesthetics and build quality, not to speak of the specs.

There was an annoying "feature", however, with dynamic contrast - screen would randomly dim and brighten as it pleased. To disable this I had to go into Intel (integrated video) control panel and set the "power saving technology" to the "maximum performance" slider underneath the "battery tab." The issue had previously persisted even when I wasn't on battery.

On another note, has anyone located a decent keyboard or LCD skin for this?

Hi, are any of you guys having problems with your HDMI port?
I know clone mode doesn't work, but even "Projector Only" mode has huge overscan for me..
I have tried on 3 different native 1080p HDTVs so far (/w3 different cables), all with the same results.
I have done numerous clean installs, various combinations of the latest and oldest A07 nvidia drivers and A04 intel drivers released yesterday.
I have also tried downloading the beta drivers directly from the Nvidia site.
I also finally updated the bios to A04...

    ...... none of this helps.

can someone with 1080p screen confirm that their HDMI port works with external display?

    Thanks.

Yep, definitely works for me. Picked up the make of the TV, set resolution to 1920x1080. By overscan you mean the desktop is drawn bigger than the TV screen so not everything fits? None of that here. Only ever really had that with analogue TV connections...

Thank you so much for confirming...
Yes, by overscan I mean I get a giant desktop that's too big to fit on the screen
I know it has nothing to do with my external hardware as I have a Studio XPS 1645 (1080p) here and it works fine with all the displays I've tried..

the L502 actually does pick up the names of the displays correctly and the displays say they are receiving a 1080p signal, which is what the laptop says also (1920x1080)

Guess this one's going back to DELL.. :(

is your config exactly the same as mine? (as in 540M and i7 2720QM)

Same happens with mine, can't see the whole desktop on my tv through HDMI.

Although my TV is quite old and only 720p, which is what I thought the problem was. Tried all the possible combinations and can't get 100% fit.

I've been connecting laptops to this TV for years now and never had a problem before.

    Thanks for your input..
I returned mine., they even changed the motherboard in attempts to fix it..

My assumption is it's going to boil down to an Optimus driver issue..

I think some people on here have it working perfectly so that's kinda weird.

I'm pretty sure that it couldn't figure out your tv so it had to make a safe guess.
You need to adjust the overscan, it lies somewhere in your nvidia options.

The HDMI output runs off the GPU, the internal display and the mini-DisplayPort run off the integrated graphics. You should be fine, as you can extend to either output but can only clone to MDP.

I haven't tried it as the HD adapter isn't available from Netgear yet, but I believe that with WiDi you can clone to a TV's HDMI input as (obviously) WiDi uses the integrated graphics. Don't quote me on this though... :)

I have to say that after having the computer for about a week, I'm very happy with it. The speakers and 1080p screen (with perhaps the exception that the lowest brightness setting is too bright, and a bit saturated) make for an excellent experience. The keyboard and touchpad and mouse buttons, and the drive tray all have just the right amount of resistance. The backlight is really helpful and attractively fades from one level to the next. The 9-cell battery only extends from the center of the laptop's back, leaving plenty of room on the sides for your legs, and the vertical-loading design provides a useful, strong grip for picking up the computer with one hand. The hinge feels solid and doesn't flex. The webcam activity light is subtle enough to look at the camera without blinding yourself. The side-vent thermal design keeps the laptop cool without toasting your legs. The AC adaptor indicator light conveniently on the plug into the laptop itself rather than on the brick, which is also great because it is very flat. The card reader blank is molded to completely fill the hole flush with the case. The Design Studio cover is sturdy and attractive.

I have to give the people who designed this laptop major credit. It might just be the most well-designed, attractive laptop that Dell has ever released. Yes it's a bit on the thick side, but so what?

There are some issues with the software or the specific hardware installed (for example, 2.4 GHz band on the 6230 card). But design-wise? Home run.

(Side note: I just got an XPS 8300 desktop too. I'm not quite so impressed with that.)
