I have talk to an dell sales representative and he told me about some freebies and discount. Finally he sent me quote for this. But quote did not include the freebies and discount is not deducted from the total value (but it discount is shown before the total value). Is he cheating me? please help me

I'm wondering about removing the laptop cover (The top-most logo bearing cover opposite the screen). Is it simple or not? I really don't want to break off a bunch of tabs.

    Why would you do that?

I dunno how to do it. FYI I took the screen off the laptop and the cover is still attached.

    Hey there,

I'm looking at upgrading my current XPS 1640m to the current gen XPS 15. I had some initial issues when I bought the 1640, stuttering sound in games, and other issues, but that stabilized after a while.

I'd like to get a configuration that can comfortably handle the new games coming out (looking at Skyrim, BF3, GW2, mostly a FPS/MMORPG player these days). Also going to be using the machine for Maya/Zbrush/Photoshop work, and web surfing with 20 tabs up at a time :D

Haven't been able to keep up with all the new processor variations and such, so it'd be great to know if my spec'd system should able to handle what I want. There were some items that were locked into the base config I chose (8G, BD writer, 9 cell, McAfee, support, etc):

    XPS 15
    2nd generation Intel® Core™ i7-2670QM processor 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.10 GHz
8GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3 Memory
    Backlit Keyboard - English
    15.6 FHD B+RGLED TL (1920x1080) and Skype-Certified 2.0MP HD Webcam
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M 2GB graphics with Optimus
750GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Tray Load Blu-ray® Triple Writer (reads and writes CDs, DVDs, BDs)
    Intel© Centrino© Advanced-N 6230 & Bluetooth 3.0
90 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

    Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
    McAfee SecurityCenter, 15-Months
    1 Year Basic Support
    1 Year Accidental Damage Service

comes in at around $1140 which is within my budget.

    Any upgrade/downgrade suggestions? Thanks!

Buy the laptop configured with 4GB of RAM, and then buy 8GB separately off Newegg. You will save $40 or more by doing this.

From what I have heard, the 2GB graphics card gives you only 15% more performance than the 1GB graphics card, so it is not worth the $100 upgrade.

Don't get McAfee. Buy Norton Internet Security 2011 on Amazon as a download. You will get way better security.

You picked a good processor. Even the i5 might do well for what you want.

Thanks for the tips! Unfortunately it looks like to downgrade those components I have to choose the cheaper base model, which gives a much smaller discount:
So for $1070 ($70 difference) the system would be configured with:

i7-2670QM 2.20 GHz (same proc, can downgrade to i5 2.4G and bank $170)
    6GB DDR3 Memory (free upgrade from 4)
    500GB 7200
    NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 525M 1GB
    15.6 FHD B+RGLED TL (1920x1080)
Blu-ray Disc BD-Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
    6-cell Lithium Ion Battery

And although I don't really care about the included software/warranty, for about $70 more it seems I get a much more powerful hardware, software and warranty package by starting with the medium spec base system.

Any advice on the wireless card? I'm always confused by the choices. BT would be good to have for me, even though I'm upgrading to an iphone soon.

I tried these out and they are giving me issues when playing movies in VLC. I reverted back to 280.26 and it is back to normal. It appears some others are having similar issues with them, so not sure what the fix is yet.

the 2gb gt 540m is only a 15% increase in performance as another user said previously.. so it's definitely not worth $100

If the better hardware is only $70 more, go for it. Personally, I have the 1000 card, and it is perfectly fine for what I use it for. Don't get the 6230. A lot of people on this forum are having a lot of problems with that card.

I also forgot to mention that I would highly recommend the 9-cell battery. It gives you more battery life, which you definitely need, considering that this is a high-powered machine. I know some people say that adds extra weight, but I am a college student, so I take this around in my backpack all the time, and I am not bothered by the weight. Plus, my chemistry textbook is actually heavier than my laptop.

If you have an Ikea nearby, this is a good stand to use on a desk:
BRÄDA Laptop support - black - IKEA
It raises up the display closer to eye level and also has the effect of tilting the speakers towards you.

For your lap, this works nicely:
BRÄDA Laptop support - Alme black/gray - IKEA

I use both of those with my 9-cell.

I played the BF3 beta using the recommended Nvidia beta drivers and I didn't have any trouble. I'm not even sure what you mean by throttling. In fact I still have those drivers installed and haven't noticed any issues.

I use this lap desk: http://www.amazon.com/Creative-4549...R27Q/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1319587185&sr=8-3. I like it because it has a mousepad on the side, so I can use my regular mouse with it.

Fortunately I don't even own a backpack =) I usually just hand carry or pop my xps 16 in its sleeve. I use both the 6 and 9 cell with it. I'll probably pick up the 6 cell for the xps15 after Dell sends me one of their sale offers later.

Speaking of desktop stands, I use this adjustable one w/ my xps 16: http://www.prlog.org/11282030-allsop-redmond-notebook-stand-black.jpg

    Hi guys,

Had my XPS 15 for about 4 months now, awesome screen, great laptop, noisy fan, blah blah blah... :)

Question - when I ordered, Dell did a free upgrade to 6GB RAM (4GB + 2GB). I'm thinking of replacing this with 2x 4GB as I do a lot of photo editing and this will help a lot. Any recommendations on brand? Corsair/Crucial/Transcend? Currently looking at Corsair CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 Laptop Memory: Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories, only £37 so quite happy with that. (The initial choice was free upgrade to 6GB or 8GB for £80!!).

    Thanks all

I just got my wife a new Lenovo for $300 and it has a single 4gb stick of samsung DDR3 pc10700, I was debating on upgrading my ram as well. I'm thinking about trading her ram (giving her two sticks of 2gb so she will have dual channel) and getting another 4gb stick of crucial from microcenter for $20 so I'll have 8gb total.

I think both should be compatible. I have the CM U3, which supports up to 17" so it's a bit bigger then the L502x with 3 movable fans, but it's very quiet and keeps the notebook really cool. Much better then the other two Belkin coolers I had, which I returned as they were ineffective.

    Hi,
I can't find this info. I apologize if it's answered. I don't see a boot option for hdd in Optical caddy drive either in setup or f12. I have SDD in primary drive. I can boot from primary, eSATA, or cd/dvd. Windows 7 and BIOS setup (F2) recognizes my 750GB as ODD. Appreciate any info.

    Much thanks,

Help with 5540 Broadband modem please!

I did a clean install of Win7 64 onto a new OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS 240MB drive. Loaded all the dell drivers in order as explained in this forum. Everything installed fine except for the modem. Control panel shows no problems, but Dell broadband manager hangs on 'initialising the broadband modem device' or 'device not communicating' if SIM is installed. A clue might be that the manager's advanced setting menu is greyed out, meaning something may not have installed correctly.

Also get an error if I try to install with the latest 5540 drivers (DELL_WIRELESS-5540-HSPA-MINI_A11_R287094.exe) so I have just used the drivers from the original installation which seemingly works as per device manager above.

Have tried loading the drivers with and without SIM. Contacted Dell support twice but on both occasions they did not reply to me as they would. Last time I am going to buy from Dell. I hope someone here can help me - let me know if you need more information. Thanks!

    Spec:
    799-17205 XPS L502x
490-12743 Graphics : 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Graphics card
    556-11098 Mobile Broadband : Internal Dell Wireless 5540 built-in 3G/HSDPA
619-25932 Operating System : English Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate (64 BIT)
490-12743 Graphics : 2GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Graphics card

    370-18916 Memory : 2x4096 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
    BIOS A06

    >>UPDATE: Another set of drivers fixed the above issue (DELL_WIRELESS-5540-HSPA-MINI_A12_R291707) and a couple of reboots later and now it works!

Don't think there's an option for this. You might be able to use EasyBCD to add an entry to your boot menu to boot from the bay.

Thanks. Has anyone requested Dell to add boot option for HDD in ODD in future BIOS? What if your primary hdd failed and you need to use your boot from your alternate drive quickly. It's difficult to remove the primary hdd.

    Got my L502x Yesterday Night..
Its faster than my Q6600 Desktop and was able to convert about 500 songs in just 35min...
My Q6600 took 45min for the same.
But the bootup and shutdown times of My Q6600 were far lower..
Guess I need to optimize it abit

My boot and shutdown speeds were really fast when I first got the laptop, but after I loaded all of my software onto the computer, the boot time is really slow.

With the latest nvidia drivers I can't seem to open vlc with nvidia, does anyone have the same issue? In the control panel it is set to integrated graphics and it can't be changed?!

received my l502 today. i5 from dell outlet uk. very pleased so far. fan thing seems to be ok. re-installed win7 ultimate, set global graphics to integrated. no desktop gadgets. normal browsing fan is off most of the time. very occasionally comes on but at quite a low level. compared to my last laptop its very, very quiet!

question re the keyboard - is that a protective layer on the base around the keys that i need to peel off? thought i would check before ripping off something that was part of the keyboard design!
