    @Zarotti

yes, by using the minipci-e slots

give a read at this topic ^^

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/e-gpu-external-graphics-discussion/418851-diy-egpu-experiences.html

anyway you may need to remove one of the cards.

as far I know the l502x have two internal minipci-e slots, you need to open the small door under the unit.

one of theose slots have room for a small card (it have a sticker under labeled wlan), the another minipci-e slot on the right side have more room, it usually comes with a hspa/gps card or a tv card, you can use that slot. ^^

edit: it looks like the adapter can also be used at the small slot ^^

it looks like the PM3M allow both sizes :) .

Do i only have to stick the PM3N into my Tv Tuner Card Slot

and Stick the E-Gpu into the PE4L

attach it to an external power source and finito ?

Do i have any peformance loss from the E-GPU with my notebook ?

    yep that is correct.
or at least that is the theory, sadly I never tested it yet ^^

you can ask http://forum.notebookreview.com/member.php?u=377824 for more details.

he posted his results using a egpu ^^

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/del...sandy-bridge-l1502x-l1702x-3.html#post7361044

well, I think performance will not be the same as plugging the card on a desktop x16 port, but it probably still way better than the integrated 540m ^^

I also read that you can get the image generated from the egpu into the laptop integrated screen by using a hacked optimus driver.

let us to know about your experience if you install the e-gpu equipament ;)

Belated thanks for your reply and information.

I'm looking into replacing the screen myself, but have 2 questions for either yourself or anyone else.
    1) For the L502x, what is the best screen resolution in relation to the screen size of 15.6" ( 1600x1200 or 1920x1080) ?
    2) Where could I purchase both a screen and the required HD screen cable?
    Thanks

I'm installing a new SSD soon. Has anyone compiled a list of links to the drivers I'll need to get my system fully working after I install Windows 7?

    Hi,

I like to test that my L502x both speakers( one at a time) and Subwoofer are working fine.

Please let me know the way to do this. I could not find anything in the dell utilities.

Here's a good starting point. Follow the sequence as shown, substituting newer driver updates where applicable...
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/564192-dell-xps-15-r2-l502x-owners-lounge-37.html#post7415385

After that, follow the SSD Optimization Guide at:
The SSD Review « The Worlds Dedicated SSD Education and Review Resource. The SSD Review

Then, perform all necessary Windows Updates (Service Packs, etc).

OK so I bought a refurbished L502X about a month ago. It came with the Avermedia TV tuner card installed. However, it did not come with the Dell external antenna in the box. I have only realised this today since today was the first time I bothered to try to use the TV tuner. I don't know how much use going back to the seller would do me since it was a refurbished model bought a month ago on eBay (eComputers, apparently a registered Dell partner according to their eBay shop).

Does anyone know of anywhere that sells the external TV antenna as an accessory? I have checked the Dell parts website and it is not listed on there. Otherwise, would I be OK just using any generic TV antenna with an MCX output?

Secondly, I was wondering if there is any way that a PS3 could be connected up to a laptop to use it as a display. Obviously since the laptop only has HDMI/DisplayPort output and not input, these are not an option. Is there any way that you could use a USB port as some sort of video/audio input from a PS3? Otherwise I seem to have read in quite a few places that a TV tuner could be used for just such a purpose. Would I be able to use the internal Avermedia TV tuner for this purpose and just how would I got about doing that?

Oh, and if it's of any relevance, I live in the UK and the laptop is a UK model.

    Thanks in advance.

Open Waves Maxx audio control panel > speaker headphone > speaker setup. Don't think you can independently test the sub.

Doubt it, just fancier controls maybe? However you can update to the latest realtek audio driver while keeping the Waves audio software somehow. But I can't find the post/quite remember how :p

only way to test the speakers would be to turn the sub woofer off and play music then to test sub woofer would be to get some sort of bass heavy sound ......... i think the two speakers in the palm rest also play some bass / mid range .... the sub woofer just plays deeper notes and what the two 4w speakers are not able to to round off the sound

Guy I have a question about the inbuilt SDHC card reader.

I am buying a Sandisk Ultra 32GB Class 10 microSD card which comes with a SD card adapter. My doubt is - If I use this high speed card with SD adapter and plug it in inbuilt SDHC card reader, will I get the maximum data transfer speed?

People who have bought this card also bought USB 3.0 card reader in order to utilize its max speed. Do I need this card reader?

First post on here as I need some help with a problem I've noticed with video playback.

I've got the XPS L502x, i7 CPU, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 525M GPU, and 1080P screen.

When playing back youtube videos (on any browser) or any other video using VLC or the DivX player, the video in whatever resolution isn't "smooth". You get "shearing" of the image (shearing most noticeable in the half centimetre at the top of the screen) when the video is showing fast action, panning across quickly or changes colours etc. The same video on Windows Media Player is smooth however.

The most annoying is viewing youtube on full screen as that is the video source I watch most.

I've updated the nvidia driver, got the latest flash for all the web browsers but the problem persists with youtube video playback.

Anyone have any ideas or solutions? I assume you understand me when I say the video playback has "shearing"???

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help or has any ideas!

This is a software issue, I think.

You said so yourself, that the same video on WMP plays just fine, without the "shearing" that VLC and DivX players have.

In VLC, you may want to change your output from Direct3D to something else. THat may help with the shearing.

As for the Youtube videos, maybe try a different browser? Have you tried using Firefox or Chrome instead of IE (if IE is your default browser).

I've only seen shearing on videos that were 1080p and still buffering, but this is when I'm actively doing other stuff in other tabs in the browser. If all I'm doing is watching Youtube then I don't get shearing.

    Thanks for the reply.

The video shearing happens on all browsers. I spent an hour to Dell where they remotely took over my laptop (paranoid now!) and they didn't have an idea.

They didn't know that trying to update the driver for the integrated Intel HD3000 GPU wasn't possible. Using the latest download (or any HD3000 driver update from Intel) from Intel gave an error message - they went off to test this on their own laptops and the same error came up!

I've uninstalled Silverlight and Flash and no difference. Something is wrong but not sure what. Really don't want to do a clean install as not sure how to do it with "hidden" Windows 7 partition Dell put on the XPS 15.

    Arrrghhhh!

Dell Support > Drivers & Downloads

Isn't the "Filtered driver results for your service tag" option supposed to show only new updates that apply to hardware that exists on the particular system?

When I select that option, it shows an update for SEAGATE-Firmware. But, my XPS 15's hard drive is WDC WD7500BPKT-75PK4T0, which from the prefix I would assume is a Western Digital drive.

I want to do a fresh install, but trying to figure out which drivers and updates I need is very difficult. Even with the Service Tag, Dell's page isn't much help.

    Thanks for the reply.

What's on that disk is now 18 months out of date. In many cases there are newer updates available. That's why I hoped to figure out what I need and download it first to prepare for the clean install, rather than installing old stuff from that disk.

I haven't started my clean install, so presumably I have this installed from factory. But, I can't find any entry in Control Panel. Where would it be, under what heading?

You definitely can. Low frequencies are automatically routed to your subwoofer. Using any graphics equalizer, you can reduce any frequencies above 200 Hz to zero. Alternatively, if you have software which creates a surround-sound effect with multiple channels, disable anything that isn't "LFE" (low-frequency effects).

The subwoofer's effect can sometimes be hard to quantify, but when you do this, you should instantly notice whether it's working or not.

You can't do an "in-place" update. However, if you completely uninstall the Dell-provided HD 3000 driver from the Control Panel (which instantly results in a black screen), you can restart (your system should load generic VGA drivers) and install the generic HD 3000 drivers provided by Intel. You'll need to shutdown your computer with keyboard commands (Windows Key > Right Arrow > Enter), so make sure that when you do this, you have no extra programs open. Otherwise, you'll have to use the power button to hard-shutdown.

It's a very safe update and it fixes quite a number of problems so I highly advise doing it.

You can delete this program and the logs from your computer if you're paranoid. Unfortunately, I did this nearly a year ago, so I don't remember the program folders and info.

You have a Western Digital Scorpio Black 750 GB. It doesn't have any new firmware from Dell or Western Digital.

The accelerometer should be under "System Utilities" and is the "ST Microelectronics-Driver" dated 3/8/2011 which is for a "DE351DL Motion Sensor."

Under the "Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel," go to Media > Image Enhancement. These are the post-processing settings which are used on any video stream that your HD 3000 can get its hands on. Use "Application Settings" for "Noise Reduction" and "Sharpness. Disable "Skin Tone Enhancement," "Film Mode Detection" and "Adaptive Contrast Enhancement."

I don't know if I need that. Under my XPS L1502x's Device Manager > Network adapters on my system, I have nothing called Dell Mobile Broadband Manager.

Thanks, I don't have GPS or 3G, so I guess it's not needed.

Dell downloads, under Chipset, lists JMicron-Driver JMB389 Card Reader with version 1.00.55.00, A01.
When I insert a card in the reader, Device Manager under Portable Devices then lists the device as manufacturer JMCR, driver 6.1.7600.16385.
The numbering schemes are totally diffferent, so I don't know if that is in fact my reader, or if that update applies to me. My Dell order didn't specify a manufacturer or model for the card reader.

The driver number on the Dell site is Dell's driver number, not the manufacturer's, probably why it shows differently.

My own guess: JMCR = JMicron Card Reader or something similar.

to see if you have an accelerometer look in device manager under system devices you should see ST Micro Accelerometer if not well then u don't have it with your system and don't need it

yes the drivers on the disk is old but it gives you the names of the devices in the system so u can find the drivers faster .... so you are sure of all the possible drivers you need to hunt for .... if you are going to windows 8 you dont need much drivers since windows has most natively just nvidia dell quickset the audio driver to get bavk waves audio max and accelerometer are needed i think windows will find the web cam for itself

    Hello again:

I'm trying to compile a complete list of the drivers I need, to prepare for a clean install. I have the Dell CD, and in some cases I already have the driver versions listed on Dell's site. In a few cases, Dell has newer versions so I downloaded them.
The following are ones that I'm uncertain about, so if you folks could help tell me what version I need, that would be greatly appreciated. The headings are from Dell downloads page, for XPS 15 L1502x

    Chipset
    lists JMicron-Driver JMB389 Card Reader with version 1.00.55.00, A01.
Should I download driver from Dell, or use what's on the Dell disk, or other?

    Network
    Intel-Application - Intel Intel ® PROSet/Wireless BT Software, 1.0.81.20584, A03. Drivers and Downloads | Dell [Canada]
Windows Control panel programs shows Intel PROSet/Wireless Software for Bluetooth, version 1.2.0.0587.
Is my current installed version newer than that on Dell's site, or am I looking at the wrong thing?

    Network
Realtek-Driver - Realtek RTL8111EL, Realtek Ethernet Controller Driver 7.041.0216.2011, A02. My Device Manager under Network adapters lists Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller, driver 7.41.216.2011, appears to be same as on Dell site. Windows Update shows an update for this, so should I download a newer one from Realtek or Windows Update instead of from Dell?.

    Removable Storage
    PLDS-Firmware - PLDS DS-8A5SH 12.7 SATA Trayload DVDRW, version XD13, A02. Drivers and Downloads | Dell [Canada]
Device Manager under DVD/CD-ROM drives lists that drive, driver 6.1.7601.17514.
The numbering schemes are totally different, so I don't know if Dell site has newer driver or not.
    Anyone provide guidance on this?

    Serial ATA
Intel-Driver - Intel Rapid Storage Technology 10.1.2.1004, A01. Drivers and Downloads | Dell [Canada]
I don't know where to find this in Device Manager, so I can't figure out if I use this currently and if my current version is different from what's on Dell's site.
Do I need this? (or, how to tell if my laptop currently uses it?)

    other

nVidia and Intel have newer drivers available from their sites than are available from Dell.
Are there any other drivers on the XPS 15 that are worth getting newer from manufacturers' sites than from Dell?

well, you can also download the intel drivers for wifi.

I have a intel 1000 wifilink card and I remember I installed the latest version from there to unlock some features needed by some wireless auditory software such as packets monitoring and stuff like that.

    http://downloadcenter.intel.com/

if you have the same card I have, try this link

you can also try getting the gigalan drivers from realtek site

    Thanks for the reply!

Would that be instead of the Realtek RTL8111EL, Realtek Ethernet Controller Driver that I currently have and that is listed on Dell Downloads?

Any information on those others that I listed?

well, those are a newer version

realtek install 7.061 while dell install 7.041 I think

I just updated the realtek ones over the dell ones and it works fine.

I installed them via device manager, right click over the gigabit card, and update controller.

manual location of the drivers and I added this location inside the package you downloaded.

    Install_Win7_7061_07272012\WIN7\64

(you will need to add the full path obiusly ^^)

not sure about the other drivers.

when I installed the serial ata one, it seemed like a tray software, wich I dont like at all.

and the previus one Serial ATA , looks like a firmware update for a dvd optical drive.

Intel Rapid Storage Technology is offered on Dell downloads under Serial ATA category, but I don't know if it applies. I don't know if I use that or if I need it for clean install.

Under Removable Storage is PLDS-Firmware which is for the PLDS Trayload DVDRW, which I have on my XPS 15.
But, Dell's numbering scheme is totally different from my installed driver, so I don't know if Dell site has newer driver or not.
    Anyone provide guidance on this?

I would install IRST direct from Intel since the Dell drivers are quite old now.

The drivers are important but not crucial for an SSD if you have one installed. (it comes with the SATA AHCI controller)

    Hey everyone.
Just wondering what's the best way about replacing the screen on this machine, as in where to purchase it?
Bought it in a shop and came with just about everything i7, back-lit keyboard gt 540m etc and also with SEC5441 screen
I've already tried to contact dell but apparently it's not available as spare parts just yet.
AUO B156HW01 V.7 genuine is the good screen isn't it?
    Thanks!

I don't have an SSD, so is this not needed? I don't see any entry for it in Device Manager, so perhaps my XPS 15 isn't using it as I have only HD. Is there somewhere else I should look besides Device Manager?

Good question. It is not on the Drivers and Utilities CD that Dell sent, nor is it on Dell Downloads. In Device Manager (prior to my clean install) there's an entry under Imaging Devices:
facap, FastAccess Video Capture, provider Sensible Vision, driver 8.8.1.0.
I believe that is the driver for the facial recognition.

    Hi All,

    313% More Air Volume

I have for sale a customized "High Pressure" laptop cooling pad that was customized to align with the underside vents of the L502X. As a long time visitor and contributor, I thought I would post here first.

This unit was selected because of it's premium quality and perfect fit for the L502X.

The OEM 80mm fans were replaced with some high power, high static pressure 125mm fans. The "Fan Tray" was completely modified to hold the larger fans. The fans are no longer "centered". They are moved Left\Center. This allows for direct air into GPU fan inlet vent located on the bottom (rear left) of L502X (about 10 o'clock). The center fan is right under the open air vent that provides access to the L502X memory modules.

This cooler puts out a tremendous amount of air as compared to any other laptop cooler on the market. You can adjust fan speeds from 15% to 100%, set it at whatever you want.

Login to your Dell account. You'll then be able to download the software.

Try seeing if you can download the software from here:
    https://smartsource.dell.com/Web/main.aspx

I think you should still install it:
Under IDE ATA/ATAPI controller heading, there is a list of standard Microsoft device drivers
IRST will replace these with an "Intel Mobile Express Chipset SATA AHCI Controller" driver

    Intel Rapid Storage Technology

Very interesting. Can you please provide a link to documentation/confirmation of that? It's not that I disbelieve you, but I want to be sure. :)

Where would I get the correct newer version from Intel? I ran Intel's detection utility, which offered me newer Intel drivers for some items but did not detect or offer that item.
