My XPS 15 has the RAM that came from Dell:

    8 GB (2 x 4 GB), PC3-10700, DDR3 667 MHz.

Do you think I would notice a difference if I replaced it with faster RAM?
(Not more RAM, same 8 GB but faster - maybe 1600 MHz?)

Upgraded today, no issues. Had to download the WIN8 bluetooth drivers, but that's about it. Runs great.

    I have the same question...

Has anyone replaced the stock RAM with a faster one like the Kingston HyperX Plug n Play 8 GB 1866MHz with HM67 chipset and i7-2820QM processor?
I saw a few posts related to this topic with someone that uses the Kingston HyperX Plug n Play 8 GB at 1866MHz in a L502x, but I'm not sure which are his system specs...

You should be able to use that RAM, but the motherboard only supports up to 1600MHz, so your RAM will be limited to that. It would be a waste of money to install RAM faster than 1600MHz.

On that note, I don't think you'd see too much of an increase in performance by installing faster RAM. You're better off investing in an SSD. I'm almost certain that the HDD is the biggest bottle neck of our L502x.

do the compatible 1600 ram also run with the stock BIOS (non modded) at 1600 speed?

not sure if someone said he could only set the 1600 speed manually with the modded bioses by seting the ram speed via the unlocked menus.

edit, I figured also the modded bios also let to change to 1866MHz, too bad I dont have compatible memory modules to test :(

Hi guys, I need some help. I've had my laptop now for 15 months and did a clean install of windows 7. I'm trying to download the drivers and have downloaded the following using my service tag:

    L502X_A_06, D2D5DEM1(Has sub folders USB and windows), SE2_CD11 (Has sub folders Dos and windows), SA5_XD13 (Same sub folders as the one before), R220849, R241392, R317457, R296901, R304505, R304507, APP_IO_WXP_VSTA_W7_A02_Setup-7W7T4_ZPE, R293038, CONEXANT_D400-USB-MODEM_DPP14_A00_SETUP_ZPE, DELL_WIRELESS-5540-HSPA-MINI_A11_R287094, DELL_WIRELESS-5620-EVDO-HSPA_A09_R292028, CONEXANT_D400-USB-MODEM_J6N4K_A02_SETUP_ZPE, R261284, DELL_WIRELESS-5550-HSPA-MINI_A03_R298998, DELL_WIRELESS-5550-HSPA-MINI_A03_R298995

Well that took a while to type on the phone...anyway could anyone tell me the order as this has got me quite baffled!

    Thanks

I would install first chipset ones

first one would be R289307.exe (huron driver (hm67))

then go for intel drivers, specially video drivers (HD3000)

then nvidia drivers, and then all others

I suggest install intel and nvidia drivers directly from intel and nvidia sites instead use the ones provided by dell (outdated)

Ok, thanks for the reply :) With the R289307 it isn't on the service tag list so would I be fine installing it even if it's not for my system?

Also is there a way to get internet access on the laptop without installing the drivers? I connected the Ethernet cable but I get no connection :(

    IMG_20121029_195205.jpg

I did some research and those are the drivers I could download

if you have a l502x, it should be ok.

anyway I moticed the list of drivers you are using is old.

    for example you have L502X_A_06

A06 bios version has been there for a long time, and A12 just got relased like two days ago ^^

I suggest you to go to the latest drivers from this page :)

Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

then select windows 7 64 bits

about the intel and nvidia drivers, at least video ones, I suggest you go to the intel and nvidia sites like I said ^^

edit: oh, didnt saw your last post

well, if you already downloaded them, you will have to check if they has been updated, and if they did, DL them from the previous link ^^

    Hi,

I met some problems with my fan with my l502x. The fanseems to be blocked form time to time and make a very loud noise. When it happens it makes a very loud noise and the airflow is inexistant or very weak. Has someone ever met this problem? I tried to clean it but it didnt change anything. I think the problme comes form the fan itslef but I'd like to be sure because it costs about 40€ ...

    Thanks you by anticipation.

No, on Windows 7 you need to install the Realtek Ethernet Driver to get Internet access with a RJ45 Ethernet cable.

Actually, the bottle neck of our L502X is the GPU...
I have a 128GB M4 Crucial SSD and the difference between a HDD and a SSD is huge. My laptop boots in 12 secs :D

I know that the official limit frecuency of our motherboard (for RAM) is 1600Mhz, but I saw a few posts saying that they use 1866MHz RAM with no problems, I just want to know the processor and chipset that they are using :(

Like I said, the bottleneck is in the HDD, not an SSD :p

You most certainly can install and use the RAM, but you won't get anything more out of it than if you just bought and installed 1600MHz RAM. You'd also be saving yourself a lot of money (at least in Canada, 2x8GB of 1600 is $100. 2x2GB of 1866 is $50).

1866 is half the price of the slower 1600? Weird.

So, without an SSD (just stock HDD), do you think I wouldn't notice any difference upgrading from PC3-10700, DDR3 667 MHz.RAM to 1600 MHz?

well, you are comparing 2Gb vs 8Gb modules, I supose that will be different with modules with the same memory ammount and different speed ratings

probably in high demandin apps, like games, emulators , and other stuff you will notice a difference.

you can also run a benchmark before and after :)

Actually, how can I tell what speed my RAM is?

My XPS 15 order, from Dell, said that it has:
    RAM: 8GB,DDR3,2 DIMM, 1333MHz

But, Speccy says my RAM is:
    8 GB (2 x 4 GB), PC3-10700, DDR3 667 MHz.

667*2 = 1333MHz, speccy reports the actual clock speed, most RAM manufacturers report the effective clock speed given that DDR3 is double data rate RAM, hence the 1333MHz.

Soluto has a "state of windows 8" page. If you scroll to the bottom, you will see that the Dell L502X is running Windows 8 more than any other model.

    https://www.soluto.com/windows-8

Give yourselves a pat on the back L502X owners!

I just upgraded and I absolutely love it.

Try to unistall any GPU Meter Gadget... I did some research and it seems that the problem is a GPU Gadget.

I buy all my stuff in Amazon, and actually the difference between a 8GB 1600Mhz RAM and a 8GB 1866MHz RAM is 10 USD.

    8GB 1600Mhz RAM:
    Amazon.com: Kingston HyperX Plug n Play 8 GB Kit (2x4GB Modules) 1600MHz DDR3 SODIMM Notebook/Netbook Memory 8 Dual Channel Kit (PC3 12800) 204-Pin KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G: Electronics

    8GB 1866MHz RAM

I just want to know if I can use the 1866MHz frecuency... I know that I can install it with no problems, but I just want to know if I can take advantage of the 1866Mhz frecuency.

Like I said before, no. The motherboard simply does not support it. Perhaps a tweak to the BIOS would allow it, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

If you did a search, you'll find many threads talking about it:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-xps-studio-xps/612534-l502x-ddr3-1600-1866-ram.html

I stand corrected, you have a processor that will allow 1866MHz RAM. It's very, very strange though, that the BIOS doesn't limit the RAM speed for only what appears to be quad-core SB processors. Such a niche exception.

However, that SPL15 guy who made the discovery says themself that there's no significant performance increase with that RAM.

The same sort of test, but repeated for Ivy Bridge, is here: AnandTech - Memory Performance: 16GB DDR3-1333 to DDR3-2400 on Ivy Bridge IGP with G.Skill

I just installed Windows 8 on my Dell XPS 15 L502x. However, every time I boot up my laptop, the motion sensor/accelerometer software gives the error message, "Error handle." I tried reinstalling the driver, but came up with the same result.

Does anyone know of a fix for this?

Interesting. It's the desktop chips though, so they're a bit faster than ours. Which means the gains most likely won't be as large from 1600 and up. I'm still tempted to upgrade to 2133MHz when those chips become available though. But I guess a CPU upgrade to 2860QM comes first ;)

Really? Really? No justification whatsoever? How does your post help anyone?

In my experience, Windows 8 is superior to Windows 7. It's much faster. It has so many drivers by default that things just work. I could go on but it's hard to dispel your complaints when you haven't made any.

anyway, what are the main advantages of windows 8 over windows 7?

on internet I can read stuff like it is a little faster and secure than windows 7?

relating to games, will games perform faster on windows 8 than windows 7?

I have a windows 7 installation from like 1 year ago, I have several installed apps, and configurations I dont wanna lose.

it is viable install windows 8 in my case? or should I stick with my windows 7 wich is working nice?

It's faster. It also enables you to spend quite a few hours tearing your hair out trying to figure out how to do simple things like turning it off :p
You can check if all your apps and such are supported by downloading the upgrade wizard. It's actually pretty neat:
    Buy Windows - Microsoft Windows

I've bought a copy and will be upgrading when I get my L502x back from service tomorrow.

    thanks for the info ximenez

ran it, and after checking results I decided to stick with windows 7 for a long long time :D

it said many of my software is outdated and need to be updated, and said other software isnt compatible at all, that plus the installation download, time, configuration, my low disk space on C drive, and many other stuff like the new windows visual stuff, I didnt liked at all.

I think that unless you really, really want to upgrade to windows 8, you won't really see much of an improvement over Windows 7. I'm testing out Windows 8 at work for compatibility with our current and legacy applications, and so far nothing has crashed or failed due to compatibility. If it runs on Windows 7, it will more than likely run on Windows 8.

Windows 8 is great once you get used to the new UI, but it's not such a huge improvement over Win 7 the way Win 7 was to Vista.

For any on the fence, I've been running Windows 8 as my only OS (not even "primary" on a dual boot, my "only"!) since the release preview came out. Switched to the Enterprise evaluation, and finally to final Win 8 Pro on 27th October. It's noticeably faster. The quick resume from sleep has my girlfriend reaching for my laptop instead of her iPad (she abandoned her laptop since getting her iPad, as she loves the "instant on" feature).

It's also incredibly stable - not that Windows 7 was unstable, but Windows 8 is a whole new level. The huge variety of keyboard shortcuts takes a day or so to learn, but makes for an overall much improved experience. I haven't used it on a touchscreen yet, but I can imagine it'll be good.

I've finally got my L502x back, with pretty much everything replaced with new HW. Upgraded to A12, enabled UEFI and installed Win8. Now, when I'm trying to install the Dell Quickset util (for Win8) - the PC locks up hard. Anyone else seen this issue? And are there working drivers for the touchpad?
