I need to get a new laptop and have decided to go with the XPS 15. I have already decided to upgrade the screen to 1080p(+$150) and also add the backlit keyboard(+$40). My question is is it worth an extra $175 to upgrade from an i5-2430m 2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.00 GHz to an i7-2760 2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz? Thanks

The i5 will be okay but i'd say get the i7 for your needs, it will be better and has 4 cores.

Depends if you want power or battery life. If you're always going to be near an electrical outlet and don't mind the laptop getting super hot then get the i7. Otherwise if you'll be on the move a lot then get the i5. I got the i5 and it's OK, but you won't be able to play games at high res and full options.

From your description I'd say the i5 would be fine, just so you realize you're giving up some power.

Hm i would go for the I5. It has decent Single Thread Performance, since its got a higher frequency per core than the Quadcore one.
@WhostheBosch: Have you actually measured the power draw from the I7 vs the I5 in idle? i bet my pants, that its almost identical ;) During load, that is another thing.
And the I7 does NOT give you better perfomance in games, when playing in higher res. The higher the res goes the higher demand of the Graphicscard is and the more less important gets the cpu.
