Hi,
I bought a Dell XPS 1530 two months ago. The only issue I have is that the fan seems to come on full whack every 2 minutes even when just surfing the net or chatting at messnger and will then stay on 2/3 minutes at a time. I find it incredibly distracting. Can someone tell me if this is normal for this model?

The Studio 1535 also has fan issues, where the fan will kick in sporadically at maximum RPM. Lifting the area where the fan is located makes the fan go back to idling speed; so far no one can offer any solution, as it may either be a hardware problem or a BIOS issue. One thing you can try is to make sure the BIOS is the latest version.

It happens with my 1530 too. So i guess its normal...

Well in my opinion normal is something that happens and u dont consider it as annoying and frustrating. Having the fan go at max RPM every 2 minutes is quite annoying for me

Do you really notice the fan? I can't say I ever have really, I know its on from the low whispery type noise of it makes but thats about it, Its nothing compared to the hdd clicking or the dvd drive squealing.

Very rarely, do I ever hear or notice the fan coming on. I think a few times I have..but that was with *dead silence* where I was

It shouldn't be at max speed when you're only chatting on the messenger. Check your processes out and monitor your temperature. Also, update your BIOS to the latest one if you hadn't already. If things are still acting up, call Dell to diagnose the problem further (aka "play along") and ultimately get a repair done on it.

I have the latest BIOS and using Core Temp. 3 minutes ago at 54 degrees the fan went crazy at max speed and is still like that. Is that normal? I am talking about 54 degrees with ONLY firefox open. And if 54 degrees is normal then why is the fan at max speed?

Have you tried undervolting? That is a pretty warm temp for idle.
Im running 43C right now. -
the average temp is 53 even when the laptop is completely idle. at 55-56 the fan starts at max speed untill it drops to 44 (takes 2 minutes) and then again the temp rises slowly to 54-55. what's undervolting (blush)?

The fans wouldnt be the problem, They are doing their job right.
I would prop the back of the laptop up with a deck of cards or something similar, It helps cool it down quite a bit.
And follow this guide for undervolting. It will cool your CPU substantially.

But It could be problem free if you follow the undervolting guide. And prop the back of the laptop up.
