I was able to pretty much eliminate any screen door I had running it through the color calibration - the gamma was way too high out of the box. Might turn the brightness down too but right now it's looking real solid.

Hopefully they update those Cypress drivers for you. I've never really used multi-gestures but I can see how they could be useful.

Turning off the "splendid" color setting in the mobility center really made the display look tons better. I can't really notice it and think its just in my head... This is the first 1080p laptop I have owned so I don't have much to compare it to.

Does anyone have sticky mouse keys? I am having an issue with the left and more-so with the Right keys sticking down. They are sometimes inresponsive as well... Its very frustrating.

Not having the issue since I got rid of the Cypress drivers - may be another issue with them.

Another annoyance - as stated before I got a refurb - I looked at the lid in the light this morning and there's some scratches on the top of it. Apparently "Certified Refurbished" = "Scratch And Dent". It's not super-noticeable but frustrating to say the least. I got such a good deal on it that I'm not going to squabble, but I'm a little worried about how easily these lids scratch.

Going to attempt the SSD upgrade tonight and noticed the screws are the tiniest screw-holes I've ever seen. I have a Phillips eyeglass screwdriver that should work but is that normal or are they really not wanting people to get into these things?

After 4 replacement 15zs, 3 palmrest replacements, multiple calls to tech support to get the trackpad functional, I gave up and agreed to an exchange for the 14z. will live with the 720p display and a functional trackpad. Too bad they could not get a working pad for me as the rest of the system was fine

2.3.6.26 --- This version of cypress seems to work best for me. The 2 finger scolling on web pages is a little "quick" for my liking but it still works better than the previous version that I had.

As far as the mouse buttons... its a build issue. I am going to make a small "issue" video this weekend (hopefully I get around to it) and I will touch on this. Its a hardware issue, not a software one. I am trying to use it alot and hopefully I can "break it in" and fix the problem. I am still 50-50 if I should return the laptop and just walk away from the 15z experience.

15z made up of junk, few days ago I was in Dell showroom and saw there was three or four guys who comparing the 15z and XPS 15 (I was standing near to them and listening there conversation) and they decided to buy 15z, they are fresher joined B.Tech.

Then I told and show them how 15z is made of faulty pieces of hardware. Afterward few minutes they left the the showroom and dell representative was give me angry look, I just smile and said I'm will visiting soon and you can't do anything. Enjoy.

The Wifi issue may be due to designing, http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wire...-wireless-performance-it-could-be-your-laptop

lol. Great find on the wifi read... I remember apple had issues with the plastic macs getting much better wifi signal than the aluminum ones... maybe its the body thats holding it back...

So Nightmare, I am within the 21 days of my purchase and I have enough issues that I can send it back for a full refund *(Pretty sure its a full refund)*... Should I do that? I only paid about 770 USD which is cheap for the specs that I have...

Has anyone experienced their computer locking up after login? Within 2-3 minutes of login my system freezes. If I wait for 5-10 minutes it unlocks itself. Turning off the computer does not help as it just freezes again after login.

Guys, I think you should include heat as a MAJOR problem for this laptop. I've had system shutdown because of heat a lot of times.

Has anyone had any issues reading SD cards using the built in reader?

I'm finding that using a 32GB Kingston Class 10 SDHC card the machine frequently hard locks up. Only holding down the power button to power down works.

It doesn't seem to be specifically related to copying data since I can just have it plugged in and whilst doing something else (or even leaving it alone if I do something else) and it happens.

    Edit:
I have just upgraded to the A10 BIOS but not expecting it to make a significant difference.

Also the read/write speed is quite slow. I only get about 3-4MB/sec reading compared to the same card in my wife's Studio 17 which gets around 18-20MB/sec

    Edit 2:
Lock ups usually occur immediately after plugging in the in SDHC card but sometimes it will work for 20 or 30 minutes and then lock up.

Did some more digging after posting. I had been travelling (and thus copying photos off a memory card) so it wasn't an easy thing to research a fix.

Upgrading to the latest driver from here (1.00.67):

    ftp://driver.jmicron.com.tw/CardReader/Windows/

It appears to have fixed my speed issues (now 22MB/sec) and possibly my lock ups too. I had noticed that the device wasn't appearing in Device Manager for some reason. Reinstalling the device driver brought them back.

This latest driver however does seem to create both an "SD" and "SD/MMC" device. If I don't disable the "SD" device the machine sits there at about 20% CPU servicing interrupts. It doesn't show as process time in task manager by process but does show in the CPU graphs and in Process Explorer.

Have a Bluetooth issue...more an annoyance.. but trying to see if this is a setting issue at my end

Starting a bluetooth mouse takes 10 seconds or more to connect!

The same bluetooth mouse when paired with my other old lappy (thinkpad with XP) connects instantly!

Those of you who use a bluetooth mouse have this delay too?

With a better processor and newer bluetooth, I thought it would be better!

    Any ideas?

I have an issue with the track pad. When I am playing a game the movement keys and the mouse seem to interfere with each other. If i am moving forward in the game i cannot use the mouse to look around without first pressing gone of the other movement keys. Also the antivirus software HitmanPro keeps saying the Cypress trackpad driver files CyHidWin.exe and CyCpIo.exe are suspicious. What is going on?

    I posted the following here.

I already had the display replaced--no luck. They're sending me a replacement unit today.

I was able to capture how the 15z vertical white lines look like in real-life (with Splendid Color turned on):

I couldn't agree more... XPS15Z is one of the worst laptops I ever owned.. A failed attempt to mimic MacBook Pro coupled with poor construction, poor assembly, poor quality control, and expensive price tag.. Never be fooled by the Aluminum exterior (which is very unstable).. the inside is nothing more than rubbish..

A final word, if you want something that looks like a MacBook Pro, then get a MacBook Pro!

Chinese manufacturers produce competitive quality goods at the lowest market price for labor. They only do as they are told. The engineering of design and the production process are from the mostly American Dell headquarters. The noticeable drop in the quality of Dell premium brands is theorized by some to be due to the recent massive cost-cutting and this is another duh-ly thing to say.

Crimsoned says Apple is to blame for flexing their legal muscles, constraining even the brightest engineers of other companies to deliberately alter their designs for the worse. Of course the spectacular success of Apple significantly affected PC makers. Even Apple's brand creation and philosophy--aesthetics over functionality--pressure changes in the traditional design of electronics. Yes they create a trend that can be considered idiotic engineering-wise, but how they managed to set a standard among the majority through public relations is almost miraculous. One must find merit in how engineers of today answer this public demand for such inefficient aesthetics.

I was not only referring to aesthetic values, but rather to the materials and the build quality... XPS 15Z is an expensive piece of hardware, and yet, it is far less inferior than the Notebook it tries to compete with - The MBP - both in terms of performance and quality.

The bottom line is, The XPS 15z achieved neither aesthetics nor functionality, may be only the price tag? ....

The 15z is an absolute piece of joke. I got an i5 2.5 GHz 1080p WLED 2GB GT525M for $499 but I still returned it. With a screen worse than the first generation mass market LCD's it wasn't worth $100 to me. If I received a good screen I'd most likely be satisfied with the 15z for the price, but my experience was Dell Hell in the flesh (I only heard stories about them before and we've had a great experience with Dell since I was a kid). Right now I have another screen problem (wrong resolution) with my L502X which has taken me an entire month already, just like the 15z. I'm actually replying to Crimsoned in a wrong thread, although the topic is related. I'm praising Apple and its few outstanding competitors (Asus, Samsung) for making a problematic design a reality. Dell deserves some credit as well for offering their failed attempts at a forgivably reasonable price.

I only replied to you because of your "apparently censored" behavior which resulted to your post being reported (not by me; I don't care) and both our posts silently edited by a mod to clear any trace of something so stupid (not in my post, just my quote of your post).

I got my dell since 2 years ago and I have had no problems until now. It just doesn't turn on, only the fan (hi-speed) turns on and there is no way to turn it off but unplugging the battery (and as you know you must remove the bottom cover case) or wait until the battery is fully discharged. But there are times (lucky ones) when suddenly is able to turn on and I can work as long as I have to turn it off again (restart, suspend, etc). Is there anyone who has the same issue? Can anyone help me.

Hi guys, i thought i give you an update about mine XPS 15z L511z after 3 years of use.

    GOOD
    - the battery still lasts 3 hours, which after 3 years of heavy everyday use is great i think
    - screen still looks like new, no dead pixels and i can use it on 2nd or 3rd level of brightness, its that bright
    - no major issues, all components still work, nothing has been replaced
    - i installed 128GB SSD instead of the DVD drive and laptop is now quicker than when i first bought it

    BAD
    - after installing the SSD, laptop is getting much hotter than before, might be because the vents are a bit clogged with dust
    - the silver aluminium trim bezel which runs around it is getting rusty on several places
    - when the laptop is plugged in, it gives slight electric shocks when touched
    - the speakers are still very bad, my gf just bought cheap Acer laptop for 300USD and it sounds much better

All in all im reasonably still happy with it, some time ago wanted to upgrade to XPS L522x but after reading about all the problems with wifi, overheating, throttling, i gave up on it. Now im on the hunt for the upgraded XPS 9530 from 2013 but there never seems to be any on the Dell Outlet UK.
Wonder if anyone still using this laptop and what are your experiences?

It seems GPU issue, do you have GT525m, as the one i have?
.......I just fixed the GPU on old XPS 1530 packed with 8600GT. It had the same symptoms like yours, when turned on, lights and fan were working but no display, so i went to a local PC, put a bit more heat on it and is working fine now, there months warranty.
My 15Z is working fine so far. I do not do game s on it, so the temps are mid 50s.

    Did you fix it?
I do not know what to say, basically the integrated video card is working (HD3000) not the GT525M, the high end video card will switch automatically when needed.
Have you tried on external monitor to see if you have video output?
    .......

I am having some problem with processor, it runs at max speed all the time, i checked the background programs, services, I stopped all of them, but only a restart will solve this problem. After a few minutes starts again full speed.
I have Bios modded and deactivated the turbo mode in Bios.
I might go back to original Bios to see if will be any improvement.

What i did to fix similar issue is go to power options, and change the MAX processor state from 100% to 99%. What this will do is to disable the turbo boost. Mine was overheating quite a lot but after this fix it runs fine and cool now.
