    Hi,

I just had a tech come today to fix my xps's sound problems and he replaced the audio chip and it works etc. He also replaced my heat sink because of my heat problems but it hasn't actually improved the temps (if anything they are worse, and he installed the heatsink correctly etc and applied new paste).

My question is what to do now? My temps are around 75c on the cpu and about 65-70c on the gpu under load. Is this normal? Its more the fact that I get uncomfortable with the laptop on my lap than anything else.

What can I do? I am still under complete care warrant (100ish days left).

    Cheers!

thats not so bad. few weeks ago i had a t9600 and with it my temps would hit over 100c across board (motherboard, cpu and gpu) after maybe 20-30 mins of gaming without any overclocking.
I've since replaced t9600 with p8600, cleaned the heatsinks and applied arctic silver and my laptop never reaches over 68c (radeon 4670 overclocked to 770 gpu 960 mem) even after the longest gaming marathons. I know i've had to sacrifice a slightly faster cpu, but instead i've gained ability to overclock my GPU and run 30c+ cooler whilst doing it.
EDIT: also another thing that helps with heat is having either a 9 cell battery, or something that will prop up the bottom end of your laptop to increase the airflow underneath it.

Cheers for the reply. I am not so concerned with the actual heat of the components themselves, but rather how uncomfortable it is to use the laptop on... my lap. It would probably burn if I left it for an hour on naked skin.

yeah, when i opened my 1640 up i noticed there is some sort of chip without any sort of heatsink right bellow the touchpad, and that thing gets still pretty hot and seems to transfer its heat directly onto the chasis.
Not sure if anything can be done about it though.

Jeremy... I posted several times on this board, telling the people that 1640 is basically a stove. However despite the fact that dell exchange this computer for me two times(second one was for 1645 model) there we some people(proud owners i guess), people that were trying to explain me the same things as the guy above(no offense) "its not so bad"... "hot?! you mean warm, right?" and etc.

    For a last time everybody
Dell studio XPS is a burner... there is an explanation for that, the heat starts build up right under the touch pad where the smart dell engineer place the south bridge but forgot that it will need some kind of cooling.

There is no fix for that and is not going to be one. Call dell as soon as you can... do some bla bla troubleshooting and just ask for escalation department, once they escalate your case, make sure to write down your ref number. A guy from escalation will call you in about a day or two. He will take care of you.

I agree the notebook gets hot, but I find it a bit difficult to play intense games while the computer is on my lap... For viewing the web, listening to music and word processing, I would put the computer on powersaver. Then the notebook hardly gets warm. I can keep my T9550, overclocked graphics 1640 on my lap for hours when in powersaver... why would you need full power to browse the web? Don't get me wrong, I am not saying the notebook doesn't get really hot under full load though... that should be normal given what's under the hood.

Those temps are fine, and are actually good.

If I hadn't owned an HP ZD8000 with a PRESCOTT DESKTOP P4 processor in it I'd complain about the SXPS 16's temps. But in reality compared to the HP the SXPS 16 is like an icebox. That old HP would literally made the wrist area get soft, the keyboard got deformed, etc.

So just an update, I found out I only had around 30 days left on my warranty so I figured I would get my screen fixed that my mum accidently scratched and also get the heat problem sorted. I phoned up dell and they said they will take it in and replace the motherboard as well as the screen for me which I am pretty happy with. They didn't want to send the tech out because the amount of parts that need replacing. I have the 3xxx series ATI card in here (512) what are my chances of getting the 1gb in the replacement, I am just curious.

    Cheers
