I bought a refurb Dell XPS 1640 3 months ago. When I installed Windows 7 64 bit, the fan started running contiously and was very loud. I verified it wasn't the hard drive coz I checked the back of the computer and their was hot air blowing from the vent.

Since I initially thought it was the HDD, I downloaded HDD life pro and it said my HDD was going to die. I got a new HDD and now HDD life Pro states my HDD is fine. But the fan still runs continously and I don't want my HDD to die again.

BTW my Hard Disk is a 7200 RPM.

    So is that normal?

You can download and run HWMonitor to take a look at temps. If temps appear to be running on the high side, try a blast of compressed air into the fan intake and exhaust areas. Since it was a refurb, it most likely needs a good cleaning - major dust bunnies ;)
