My Dell XPS 1645 [see sig for specs] will random shut off on me. I will be doing anything from watching a movie, listening to music, or just browsing and it will random shut off. They are like days apart but It shut off 3 times on my today :S.

These shut offs are not Temperature related as In BOTH Windows and Ubuntu it has shut off and I have been monitoring temperature in both, with log files so I can check the temperature @ shut off time.

I live in Jamaica and it would be kind of hard for me to just send it in to have it looked at. I'm hoping the next BIOS revision along with fresh installs of both OS's will do the trick. *Crosses fingers*.

Anyone else having this issue? Any Fixes?

mine actually just did this to me for the first time.

when i restarted, i had no display. the only thing was the very bottom row of pixels were lit up white... while staring it down angrily thinking of what I was going to do, it suddenly restarted again. Now I'm back in windows with a "unknown" problem that caused windows to bsod. (couldn't see the bsod as there was no display).

Pretty certain its a GPU issue, and very glad I'm going to be sending this back anyways.

almost sounds like a short to me.. is it a crash or an actual total loss of power?

I've had no other issues's I havent BSOD'd or anything of the sort. It just seems like a loss of power :S I mean I can game for like 16 hours straight. Chat on Im for 3 hrs then *boom*. It just shuts off...then I reboot and Im good to go. As I said they are few and far apart. I'm pretty sure it's gonna take so long to shut off next time that I'm gonna think "ok my problem is gone".

The Solution to this problem was actually to remove one of the RAM Sticks. It seems that one of the ports was damaged somehow, the System will recognize the RAM and shows me 4GB but it will shut off randomly.

I had removed one of the RAM Sticks and after a few hours of use, it shutoff. I have since moved the same stick of RAM into the other port and there has been no shutdown.

I will continue testing it under variable load for a few days before I come to any SOLID conclusions, however this does seem to be working.

I will also be testing to check if the other RAM Stick exhibits similiar behavior, ie. the laptop shutting off with it in one port (the one i presume to be bad) and functioning correctly in the other Port.

I had spoken to XPS Tech Support before-hand to ensure that none of this voids my warranty [which is doesn't]. I will be arranging with them for a technician to come and replace my motherboard.
