Long story short, the screen and motherboard in my Dell XPS 1647 (the X1647-5330BK preconfigured model, with the 900p screen) fried. I sent the laptop to Dell, but since the damage wasn't covered under warranty, the offered to replace the motherboard and screen for ~$320. Another option they mentioned was that if I got the replacement parts, they would put in the replacement parts for me, which got me thinking...
I figured that if so much of my laptop is already being replaced, why not upgrade the screen in the process. I'm guessing that the RGBLED (even if Dell/another seller still had them in stock...) wouldn't fit, as its a 16" screen and would require changes to the chassis? Would the B+RG LED 1080p screen on the current XPS 15 be compatible with the XPS 1647? If neither of those options work, the normal WLED 1080p screen would be an option as well.
Once I've got an idea of what screens are actually compatible with my laptop though, there still is the question of exactly how I would obtain it. Would Dell be willing to provide me the replacement parts to a screen upgrade, since I'm already paying the full price? Would they be willing to source parts from another laptop (if the B+RG LED screen fits)? Otherwise, are there any websites/3rd party alternatives that I could source LCD screen replacements from?
Thanks a lot for for the help.

The RGBLED screen of the SXPS 1645/7 would fit your laptop well. Actually in SXPS if you have to change the screen you have to change the complete Lid, as the Lid is made as a single unit. I had my screen replaced on my SXPS 1645 when I had it. They changed the complete Lid. My laptop was still in warranty so they swapped it for free and I had RGBLED screen. And the screen was worth 19.5k Indian rupees, so you would get it for around 400$ and thats well above the combined price they are quoting you for screen and motherboard.
And In my opinion its not worth it. Atleast at this point when your laptop is over a year old.
