I have a Dell XPS 17 (L702X) with the NVidia video card that includes the 150W power adapter (19.5V, 7.7A).
I like to have 2 power adapters so I can travel with one and leave the other plugged in at my desk. I have an older Dell power adapter that is a 65W adapter (19.5V, 3.34A). The round plug is the same size as the one included with my XPS 17 and when I use it on my laptop, everything SEEMS to work correctly. It detects the laptop as being plugged in.

Does anyone see any issues or potential risks of using this smaller, lighter power adapter occasionally?
I'm wondering if the 150W is only needed when the NVidia video card is being used so perhaps when using the integrated video the lower power supply is OK.

Well the adapter won't have the power to charge while you use the system for much of anything for sure. And it definitely will have issues if you start using the dedicated GPU. You should be getting a warning when you plug it in that performance will be hampered or some such.
