Hi, I only got the basic warranty on the dell, so I don't think i'm applicable for in home service, I was watching a DVD yesterday and it felt like the whole optical drive was shaking while it was being read and through out, I made sure the disk was properly placed etc, after taking the DVD out now it has been damaged with scratches everywhere and what looks like a burn mark, in the smaller circle of the disk bottom side, I have had the machine less than 30 days, I love the sound system on the machine, however coming from 1080p screen on my previous machine i'm not too happy with the 1600 x 900 screen, can somebody tell me if I would be able to either refund the machine ( I still have all the packaging etc ), or what my options are.

Your basic warrenty certainly covers a bad optical drive; sending the entire laptop back might be a little painful though.

sending it back is something I cant afford to, I travel in a week. I would rather just refund it but i'm outside the 7 day period.

    Hi,
I was having some problems with my DVD drive, I contacted the phone support, they wasted 1 hour, then agreed to replace it, tried to get me to buy extended warranty, to get it replaced at my home , I refused, then they offered me a One off offer for £25, I still refused, in the end they said as good will gesture they will get it replaced at my home as express service for free, .so give it a try

I was rather lucky, just got off the phone with them, they have offered to replace my optical drive & my heatsink ( i mentioned heating issues of the palm rest ), and I upgraded to the 3 year next business day international warranty. Engineer comes on Monday to replace the parts.

With the basic warranty they should have offered to just send you the drive to replace on your own. It's a few screws and it slides right out.

if they send an engineer atleast the problem will get fixed, and if they leave any damage, then get a replacement :p
