I'm asking here because NBR is a lot faster than Dell :)

Which version of Vista Home Premium is delivered with the 1730? 32, 64 or both versions?

Dell let you select only the 32bit versions of Vista (at least on the UK site).

I've installed 64bit Ultimate on my M1730 (alongside XP 32 and 64 bit Kubuntu). It's allegedly more stable and secure, due to use of a couple of not widely advertised features only utilised in the x64 version. I'm quite sure and speed differences are virtually immeasurable, especially because of this being Intel's take on x64 (rather than AMD's).

Hmm. On the Dutch website you can't select anything, so I presume they'll ship Vista 32 bit.

But you bought the 64bit separately, effectively paying twice for Vista?

    It'll be 32bit by default.

I have the full version of Vista Ultimate, and it came with both the 32bit and 64bit discs - I still chose the 32bit just to make sure all software/drivers etc are compatible and to minimise any headache later!

    Interesting comment from tomshardware

    from

    64bit testing

The upshot is that it doesn’t make sense to install a 64 bit version of Vista in order to better utilize 4 GB of memory simply because the 32 bit version would only recognize 3.5 GB. The problem is that while it is true that you would “gain” the missing memory, you would also immediately lose it to the system due to the 64 bit version’s larger memory footprint. Thus, using a 64 bit version really only makes sense with larger memory sizes.

And then i found this further down

If you already use Windows Vista and are considering making the switch to 64 bits, you may find yourself wondering whether you’ll have t buy another software licence. Users that bought Windows Vista Ultimate need not worry, since the installation disc contains both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of the OS.

For all other versions, you can order 64 bit installation discs directly from Microsoft and will have to pay only a nominal fee for shipping and handling. Beware though that this offer only applies to full retail versions of Vista.

If you are using an OEM version that came pre-installed on your computer, you are not eligible for this offer and won’t be able to order the installation discs. The same goes for system builder versions (DSP/SB).

    Cheers

I downloaded the 64-bit disc and used my key. The keys are the same between 32 and 64, it just has to be used within the same product line (Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, etc are all different).

Search for a tool called ProduKey to extract your key from Vista.

I can second that this works. I used my Dell OEM 32 bit ultimate key to with a Vista 64 bit install. When I went to activate after install I got an invalid key error, so I just entered it again and it activated fine. I'm not sure if it was an entry error when I initially entered it during install but that's what I assumed happened. Oh well it works fine now.

Even with all that RAM, not even Vista64 can touch Xp32 in terms of gaming performance :)
