What fan profile are you using with Power Manager? I'm on "ultra performance" and I haven't heard it come on in normal usage (browsing, youtube, word/docs work, meeting presentations, etc.).
-
Sure? Not being really silent during light use on AC power has been an old complaint with the XPS 15. You may not notice it in an office, but is disturbing in the still of the night. And it tends to be worse when on the WD15/TB16 dock.
-
I wouldn't agree with this. Maybe most SD cards used today are indeed micro, but the faster ones are still regular DS.
-
Hmm I'm not sure. I live in Hong Kong so it's basically impossible to have a room at 30db

I'll disagree with everything you said.
I am a novice shooter but all of my DSLRs use full size SD cards and they are much faster (300MBps vs 100MBps).
I've owned probably 50 laptops in the past few years and all of the IPS panels have some back light bleed, even standard computer monitors have back light bleed. Even my touch panels with gorilla glass have back light bleed. I'm looking at my X1 carbon with the WQHD touch screen and there is some there. It's really the degree of bleed that matters.
I had zero issues with my fan profiles on the 9570. When unplugged it never rev'ed up. There seems to be a much wider range of fan operating speeds on the 9570 vs the 9560 and 9550.pressing likes this. -
Is eGPU performance only bad when accelerating build-in laptop screen, or is it also bad when external monitor is connected to eGPU? I want to buy 9570, but gimped TB performance is deal breaker for me because I intend to "upgrade" it with GPU, as soon as next gen nVidia cards are out.

Just totally not true. UHS-II are also micro SD.
And you obviously didn't understand a single thing I said. UHS-II is also micro sd card. Then you had 50 garbage laptops and they had all FullHD panels. Like I said, back bleed is not an issue of IPS panels, it is an issue of the (slim) frame. 4k panels have glass on its top, which will stabilize it even in every direction. That's why 4k displays have way less back bleed even it is also IPS.
Hm... zero fan issues with the 9570 (9560 has the same issue btw)... lets see what reddit says about that:

I want to use my XPS permanently connected on AC (power) when I'm at home, and I want it to be 100% silent when I do little work like browsing/word/movies, especially at night. And that's not the case, since years, for all XPS. The fan curves Dell hard-coded into bios are just ridiculous, and you cant change them. Can also be, that people who have the Full HD panel wont see fans on that much, than with the 4k panels, but thats just a thought. I am talking about idle and little work of course, not gaming or anything.Last edited: Jun 25, 2018 -
I am not having problems with the fans at all. Just make sure to have gone through the initial updates and remove some crapware (which to honest wasn't even that much!)

I always output to a TV via HDMI. If you are using a 1080 or better or especially if you don't mind not using sync, performance will be more acceptable to you. I just had issues keeping 60 FPS locked with my 1070 in certain games, regardless of detail level.

I admit I haven't been following them for quite a while, but 5 min browsing:

Trust me, I understood everything you said. UHS-II is great, but the microsd cards are only 100mb/s write, not 260 like the full sized one. You can argue all day but 260MB/s is faster than 100MB/s. There is a reason high end DLSR cameras have full sized SD slots. When you start shooting raw images you need every bit of speed you can get.
I haven't had 50 garbage laptops, if you think the X1 is a garbage laptop then you're an idiot. They did all have full HD panels unlike my carbon X1. I don't need 4k as much as I need battery life. My X1 has glass over it and it has BLB. My 7373 has glass over it and it has BLB. My XPS 9365 has glass over it and it has BLB... Need I go on?
I can find anything on redit, I'm not impressed with your ability to search. Did you read my thread on the 9570, I think I know a thing or two about it...
I've only worked as a computer tech since 2001, and an enthusiast since way before that. Please continue to tell me how I don't know what I'm talking about. After repasting, repadding, heatsinking, and undervolting my 9570 I never had any issues with the fans. Prior to doing all that the laptop was pretty much benching or stability testing 24 hours a day. Just in terms of XPS laptops, I've had several 9550s, several 9560s, a 9350, 9360, 9365, 9575 and the 9570 is by far my favorite.Last edited: Jun 26, 2018improwise, Trader05, Woodking and 1 other person like this. -
Curious if the new firmware/BIOS or whatever that's improved Firestrike scores and eGPU use is also helping with the low 1% frames issue you discussed in your review? I noticed on the 9575 some of the more erratic framerate issues on the quad core as compared to my ULV Macbook Pro. That said, it wasn't always worse - many games ran better on the 9575.
Finally - eGPU, in my experience is a difficult road to high refresh rate gaming. I'm fine with a quieter machine running all the eye candy at 30FPS. I know most "real pc gamers" aren't cool with that. I still desire 60FPS across the board though. This is the main reason why I still won't buy a high refresh rate monitor. I don't want it to spoil looking at all the 60FPS screens in my life. -
I've been using an eGPU for 2 years, but I am thinking of just getting a thin max-q 1070 laptop or something next.
-
Is this eGPU performance problem is a driver issue that can be fixed in the future updates, or is it a limitation of some crappy TB chip Dell has used in 9570?
Any other laptops with same TB hw configuration to compare to? -
I now sold my 9570 because only of the fan behaviour at idle/very light surfing. I've done the whole modding thing (repasting, undervolting, padding) and have tried a lot of combinations, but nothing helps. Fans kicks in at 2.500 rpm > off > on > off > on ............ I hear that very clear in the evening when my environment is silent.
For all other brave users i hope Dell will fix that annoying fan control.
By the way i don't understand Dell at all; this is so poor. -
There are really few alternatives (none?)
I have bought, tried, and sold: XPS 13 9370, xps 15 2-in-1, xps 15 9570 (had screen issues), Aero 15, GS65. And now I'm back to the xps 15 9570 and got one with a good screen and I couldn't be happierpressing likes this.
