I was looking into potentially getting an XPS 15, which would be my first Dell. How long should I expect to have it functioning and at what capacity, as it will be my primary computer constantly on the move in a college environment.

Lifetime of a notebook is twofold:
    1. How long does it actually hold, thats about 4-5 years, after that most notebooks are worn-out.
    2. How long is it useful, that depends on the applications you throw at it...for most "normal" (casual gamers) a high-end multimedia notebook, like the XPS15 is usable for 3-4 years.

Given the XPS track record, might want to get that 3-4 year warranty. Also given you are in college, Complete Care might be a good investment.

Make sure once a month you blow out all that dust in the fans, heatsinks, heat fins.
