hello people, i recently ordered a dell xps m1330 with led screen and got it today (after 2 weeks) but the screen seems awfully thick. how do i know i got the led and not the standard screen (which is about $120 cheaper)? also, there is a large and visible scratch on the left side of the aluminum palmrest that really gets on my nerves. has anyone else had a similar problem? thanks in advance.

If you ordered and got a new one, you can have the palmrest, or the notebook replaced, in case you aren't satisfied with it..

As for the screen, check under Device Manager\Monitors\Generic PnP Monitor\Details\Hardware IDs. See what the value is.. AUO***, CMO***, and LCD2306 are the three known tags for LED backlit displays.

If you ordered a webcam, telling whether you have a CCFL or LED backlit display is even easier. 2MP- CCFL; VGA- LED.

i knew it, it isn't led. they ripped me off. the hardware id is SEC5441. now i have to send it back and wait for a month to get a refund and my classes start next week. this is the second time i've had to send a dell laptop back. i used to be a dell fan but now i can understand why they've been replace by hp as the number one seller of computers.

no offense but... HP sucks... just cause they make lots of noise about their neat gadgets and features they usually get more public, not to mention there are more HPs on store counters than any other computer brand.
ive worked with HP laptops and i can say with all certainty that dell cuts HPs head off, literally, you did good on choosing dell, only that problem of yours, well, bad luck i guess...

HP and dell both suck, but dell has good warranties that suck back at them.. :D

BTW, The SEC5441 is an LED backlit display too.. It's manufactured by samsung..

LED panel is intrinsically a little thicker than normal panel.

First of all, as sesshomaru said you have a Samsung brand LED screen; so, stop crying. You got what you ordered. Samsung LEDs are considered by many as one of the best screens. You are lucky that you didn't get a CMO screen.

As for the defect on the palm rest... If you need the computer for your classes, you can start using it and have DELL send a technician to replace it. It will take about 30mins. If you prefer a brand new replacement instead, then you'll have to wait. Your call.

I dont think so... Have you seen both side by side? Not with the enclosures, etc, just the screens? I have, and there is no comparison how much the CCFL is thicker than LED. Besides, how could they fit a 2 MP camera into a CCFL case, while only can fit a VGA camera into an LED case, if LED was thicker?

thanks everyone for replying. tenderidol, i'm not crying but just a little disappointed. anyways, another problem i have with the order is that the package i received did not include the xps sleeve or the creative headphones mentioned in this post and others. is this another mistake on dell's part or has dell just stopped giving out extras? thanks again

The Sleeve and the earbuds are no longer included.

@tenderoil.. The best LED backlit display for the 1330 is the Toshiba.. The LCD2306. I have seen three in person.. the toshiba, CMO, and the Samsung. The CMO is horrible, and so I have heard for the AUO as well
