I recently sent in my laptop to be repaired by dell under warranty, the dreaded video card problems. I got it back and it worked just fine for a couple of weeks. Then I was working on it and it suddenly stopped charging the battery, I didn't notice until the thing nearly turned off (down around 10%). I was able to get it to charge for a second by tilting the plug from the A/C adapter up, but that recently stopped working. With the battery in I can get into the bios just fine, and it will begin booting. I stop it because the battery is likely to die when loading windows. Dell support is not helpful, since its not the video card, they won't replace the main board under the extended warranty.

    So my question is:
    - I probably need to get the dc plug repaired, any reputable recommendations for this process?
    - Is there an alternate solution? Some dongle to charge the battery or directly connect to the laptop?
    - How common is this problem? Why don't they design the damn plugs better (this is 2009!)

They will have to replace it as the psu board is not working as to speak to a line manager ans state your issue from the start.
Keep on their case and log emails and chats and get names of agents you have contact with.

    On the phone.

They will sell me a 1 yr warranty for 178 bucks for on-site repair of this part. What a joke, it should be covered, but whatever, cheaper than a new laptop.

Replaced motherboard for nvidia problem: October 14.
    Happy Customer
A/C plug stops working on laptop, can't charge battery or use laptop, November 1st. Need motherboard replacement, not covered!
    Pissed off.
Try again, can't convince Dell to give me a free mobo replacement of their broken mobo they sent me. Sign up for warranty to get it fixed.
Slightly less pissed off. Will probably steer clear of Dell from now on.

Update: Back with support guy, he convinced his boss to pull it back to depot and fix it for me for free? Great! So I guess they will replace the motherboard again under warranty.
A little more happy now. Might purchase a Dell in the future.

How common is this crap? Anyone have any suggestions on making sure my laptop is happy when it comes back and works for years and years to come?

They had to replace or fix your PC as the fault was with your GPU.
The tec should of carried out a test to make sure your PC is working this includes charging BT if fitted WWAN WIFI the full morks all function of keyboard Rom drive casing etc etc.
And you should of signed off their work at the end if your not happy you should not sign and contact the line manager or control.
    Good for you.
I think its worth taking out the extra cover ;)
