So I've been reading a bunch of threads on people's horror stories with the XPS M1330 and the NVIDIA 8400M graphics card. Well, I'm not a gamer at all, so I was wondering if people have still run into issues with the M1330 with just the Intel X3100 card (overheating, motherboard, etc)? I really liked the XPS due to its looks and portability and wanted to hear people's opinions on purchasing this product with some features (such as 4 GB RAM, 250/320 GB HD, X3100 card, standard display, Core 2 Duo T8100) as I pretty much just use it for Internet, word processing, music, and watching occasional movies...I'm really in it for the portability factor as I occasionally lug my laptop around and use it in class (being a graduate student), but not every single day. Thanks for all your help...

Also, if you really think I should purchase another type of laptop, my price range is probably max $1100. Thanks..

If it's "for Internet, word processing, music, and watching occasional movies", then the integrated Intel GPU is completely enough. Don't worry, you won't have any heat issues, and the weight is perfect for carrying it around every day.

    other choices:
    Macbook
    Lenovo U330
    Studio XPS 13

the Dell XPS is out dated.... if the only thing that attracts you is its design... try something else?

if ur a student, remember to look at educational discounts by Apple, Lenovo(CPP) and Dell(EPP)

There are no problems known with the X3100 Dell XPS M1330. I have one as well since over a year and no problems so far.

Using the 4GB configuration results in 3573 MB usable with a Vista 32-Bit version - even though the shared memory graphics card uses some space. You can even put 8GB into it and make use of it using 64-Bit Linux or Windows.

However buying a new laptop I'd look for a Centrino 2 based on. The X3100 doesn't even have BluRay acceleration. Therefore I'd at least pick a GM45 based one. Or one with a nVidia Geforce 9x00M.

even though the xps m1330 is a very good computer that would suit your needs perfectly, I think you'd be happier off buying the xps studio 13...

i'm thinking of buying one too..with the dedicated gpu though. studio xps 13 might be too expensive for me, and it's a bit heavier too. I'm concerned about the heat problem though..has this been or will it ever be fixed?

thanks to everyone for your input...I'll definitely look into the studio xps and lenovo but they seem a little out of my price range, so I'll see..
