I'm looking for a portable notebook and was wondering if I buy the M1330 and Nvidia 8400gs chipset will I be free from all the defects that have plaqued this machine in the past?

Also, Is the startup of this machine so loud that it would disturb my class if I started it while a lecture is going on? I'm in college and need a fairly powerful and portable notebook.

    Thank you

I have no firsthand knowledge of the answers to either of your questions, but i did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night... and I've read every word written about the m1330 since placing my order a week and a half ago.

From everything I've read, nobody can definitively answer your first question and you're likely to hear doom and gloom from some, and hope and sunshine from others.

For the second question, as I understand it the notebook startup noise is primarily the slot-load optical drive and keeping a disc in the drive eliminates this noise upon startup. Though I assume ejecting the disc in class or loading a new one would create the undesired noise you wish to avoid.

The noise is barely a two second noise and it's not THAT loud...(yes i guess no noise is better) but I don't think it's something that everyone in the class is going to stand up and shuuush you about :)

The Nvidia...............I gave up on it....i've never had a problem but some people say it's just a matter of time till mine goes out....I think if you treat her nice she'll be good

    IDK lol

No one knows for sure, but till now, compared to the number of laptop' actually out in the world, the failure rate is relatively low, IMHO.. and for those whose GPU failed, Dell has been replacing them as they have said initially, which is "deal with it on a case by case basis".. and for sure, these days I guess they aren't that dumb to be still shipping systems with defective GPU'.. in all probability they have been replaced.

And in any case if you have an issue, see the above link.. Dell has given out a addition 12 limited warranty specific to this issue, and this 12 month is in addition to the warranty you might have already got with your system. So there.. good luck. I would say, go ahead and get this system.. these (M1330 and M1530) are some really nice laptop'..... I am sure you'd enjoy it.

The laptop dont make any noise if you not have any disc on the drive

I thought it should be the other way round, particularly when starting up... at least the other member who posted in that thread I linked, had seen it / heard it... :D
